Why did his fellow Knick players call Dave DeBusschere "the Pole"?

His teammates called him "the Pole" because that's what keeps up the tent, because DeBusschere did all the rebounding.

Feets Broudy loved those old Knick teams. His comments, comparing the oldtimers with modern players, reveal everything about why the Celtics beat the Heat.

Feets: "The ballplayers of yesteryear were very close, even with opposing teams. Oh, you have some today who are close, but it isn't like it was years ago. Then they used to go out to a bar and drink beer and talk about the game. Today, they run, as soon as the game is over, they run.

"But I'll tell you, that championship team of the Knicks in 1969 (sic), they were very close. They used to help each other out. Like they helped out Bradley, who wasn't such a good defensive player.

"Nowadays, in my mind, the players are much more talented individually, but years ago it was a team game. I enjoyed basketball years ago much more. Like now everyone's looking to shoot, but years ago they'd turn their heads to see who was free under the basket and pass it to them."
