The Celtics are in a familiar position tonight, still with the sixth and 17th picks in Thursday night's NBA draft.
According to a league source, Danny Ainge and Co. have done more than their due diligence investigating a move up, and have talked with all five higher teams in the draft order about trading for a higher position. That includes Cleveland, which has the top pick for the second year in a row, and the third time in four years.
Nothing, though, is imminent. The Celtics have also talked with teams about securing a lower pick, as well as a choice in the second round. It appears that contrary to Ainge's stated beliefs earlier in the year, the team does indeed beliece that this is a deeper than normal draft, with a chance to land a true player of merit at No. 17.
But as is typical two nights before the draft, most teams are still taking and making offers and digesting information. The real action almost always accelerates on draft day, which has often been Ainge's time to pull off something big.
