Re: Amir Johnson on his way to Boston.
Looks like the odds-on-favorite for PF rotation just changed.
Probably Johnson with a little help from Mickey.
Sully, Kelly and Bass; going, going, gone soon?
Bargain hunting by Danny? About $10 million per year cheaper than it took to sign Love, and a three year shorter obligation.
Of course, Amir Johnson isn't Kevin Love...

Hoopshype reporting we also resigned Jerebko to a 2 yr / 10M deal. We'll have a roster of all PGs and PFs.

ESPN says Amir's contract is 2 years, $24M.
Amir Johnson is now the highest paid Celtic.

Re: Amir Johnson on his way to Boston.
I've always thought he played well against the Celtics. What I didn't realize is that this will be his 11th season in the league, but he's only age 27. Also surprising that, although he doesn't take a lot of threes (making him just fine in my book), last season he shot 41% from behind the arc. Also he's a swing man between PF and SF, which may take some pressure off getting another "3." And, Johnson, Mickey, Jerebko and Crowder (for small ball) should represent a decent PF foursome if the Celts decide to trade Sully and Olynyk while letting Bass walk. Maybe not a championship quartet; but all I care about at this juncture is a balanced squad that can play a competitive game of basketball together, grow together a little bit, work on capitalizing on their strengths and minimizing their weaknesses, and allowing the rest of the team to progress in a similar manner without having to play out of position.
Okay, Danny, go out and get the early bird. A robin would be nice.

I don't like this signing at all.
$11-12M first year for a 28YO who gets 10pt, 6 reb, 1 block a game on less than 60%FT shooting?
really?
what am I missing here?
somewhere about $16-17M in cap space used this year in those two deals.
maybe $6-7M left and we can Match Crowder or extend him longer term over the cap.
fireworks?
hope there is a trade for a real big man with our glut of guards on this roster.

I recall Toronto fans aren't very high on Johnson at all. Like he's over the hill despite his relatively young age.
Maybe a change of scenery will help?

Re: Amir Johnson on his way to Boston.
so does this mean we are now UNDER the cap?
I am having a hard time trying to figure how we fit Johnson in at even $10M this year.
we were somewhere around $63M minimum with all our cap holds (including Bass and Jerebko).
with the cap now at $69M, that's only $6M under.
Jerebko signing first, saves another $2M or so from his cap hold. still not enough unless Danny renounced other holds, which means those TPE's may be gone.
Amir Johnson?
wow.

kdp,
It's effectively a 1 year deal. The 2nd year is unguaranteed. Same with Jerebko.

Re: Amir Johnson on his way to Boston.
According to ESPN's dubious advanced stat "real plus minus", Amir Johnson ranks 21st among PFs, one spot above Jared Sullinger.

Yup. Danny paid a premium to get the flexibility to dump him after one year.

Look on the bright side, we're not paying Goran Dragic 19-20 million a year until he can collect social security.

/36mpg:
12.6 points
8.3 rebs
57.4%fg% (59% from 2, 41% from 3, less than 1 3ptfga/36mpg. So he's not a threat of turning into Sully)
2.1 assists, 2.0 turnovers (ok, not great, but ok for a PF)
61% ft% (yuck)
1.1 blocks
7'3" wingspan
He's not a scorer. Because of that, he didn't qualify for the fg% leader's board (you have to have 300 fgm to qualify. Johnson only had 298). Two more fgm and Amir Johnson would be the second most efficient shooter in the league (only Jordan was higher, but that's because the only thing he can do is dunk). Between DeRozan, NBA 6th man Lou Williams, Terrence Ross and Valanciunas I'm amazed he got to touch the ball at all frankly.
Amir Johnson is a garbage man. The ball goes up and he collects the trash. 2.9 offensive rebounds out of every 8.3 rebounds total. He is quite long.
When he was drafted in 2006, at age 18, he was listed at 6'9". No way. Here's a picture of him, in 2006, standing next to 6'11" Rasheed Wallace. He has to be 6'11" now.

Re: Amir Johnson on his way to Boston.
kdp,
Sorry, but you'll never ever get me to talk money when discussing the possible acquisition of a player. It's Danny job—not ours—to be creative in working out finances. For example, isn' it true that the Celtics have not yet renounced the several cap holds that are counting against their cap?
I definitely would like Lopez, but that desire is not affected by monetary considerations. Either I'd like to have him or I wouldn't...and it happens that I would. I'm happy to let Danny take it from there.
Besides, from what I'm hearing about Lopez, he could become a headliner in a Boston comedt club, returning to those second-job days of yesteryear. LOL.

Re: Amir Johnson on his way to Boston.
Per ESPN Scouting Report:
– Outstanding help defender; strong and agile in the lane.
- Finishes well around the hoop; struggles on the perimeter.
- Good, not great rebounder; better on the offensive glass.

Re: Amir Johnson on his way to Boston.
Another way to look at the Johnson AND Jerebko signings is that they are BOTH expiring contracts.
They are both 2-years WITH THE SECOND YEAR NOT GUARANTEED. So Danny could trade them and all the receiving team would be responsible for is the remainder of this year and Danny has TPEs that could further reduce that.
Remember Keith Bogans? He signed a 3-year contract to make the KG deal happen but only the first year was guaranteed. He spent most of that year at home watching soap operas and then got passed around like a cheap hooker. The difference between the hooker and Bogans is that the hooker got paid. In the end, after multiple trades of his non-guaranteed contract, he just got cut.
I think there is a 2 month waiting period before you can trade a player you just signed but 2 months still expires before opening day.
So, let's suppose that there's a certain player, say, a center, who just cannot get along with their coach. Let's further suppose their team just drafted a center and he's looking good. Danny could offer Johnson and/or Jerebko and/or Wallace plus players under contract plus TPE plus draft picks. A wide assortment of incentives including a complete, fully paid for salary dump.

Amir always killed us.
As far as the $$$$, big bucks are flying all over.
Now if we can land a center through free agency or a trade we will be fine.

dboss,
Unfortunately, the Sixers just traded for Nic Stauskas, so the motivation of Hinkie to trade one of his centers for one of our guards just went down.

Re: Amir Johnson on his way to Boston.
The Toronto Raptors announced Wednesday they have signed free-agent forward Luis Scola to a multi-year contract. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. “Luis is an accomplished NBA and international player. We are thrilled to add his experience and leadership to our team and our locker room,” said Raptors President and General Manager Masai Ujiri. “Luis is a winner wherever he goes.” – via NBA.com

MY NOTE: So, the Raptors lose Amir Johnson and replace him with Luis Scola? Listen, I'm a HUGE Luis Scola fan, have been for years and years now, but he's 35 years old and they signed him to a multi-year contract?! This has to be seen as a downgrade to the Raptors from last year, even if Scola's contract is a one-and-one like Johnson's and Jerebko's.
