After one day of free agency, the Boston Celtics have removed themselves from contention for free agent Tobias Harris, according to the Boston Herald's Steve Bulpett.
Bulpett reported early Thursday morning that Boston had "a certain financial parameter in mind" for the 22-year-old forward, and decided to back away from the pursuit when it became clear the Orlando Magic would match an offer sheet.
The Celtics came away from Day 1 of free agency with three signings: Jae Crowder for five years, $35 million; Amir Johnson for two years, $24 million; and Jonas Jerebko for two years, $10 million. The latter two contracts reportedly include nonguaranteed second seasons. None of the deals can become official until July 9 because of NBA rules.
With roughly $66 million committed next season on 14 guaranteed contracts, Boston is brushing against the upper limits of the salary cap, but could still have some space with a bit of creative maneuvering. According to Bulpett, the Celtics also stepped away from interest in Corey Brewer after agreeing to re-sign Crowder.
