Boston Celtics Training Camp Preview: Perry Jones III

by Eric Laboissonniere 1h ago

Training camp for the Boston Celtics starts in about two weeks and the team still has 16 guaranteed contracts for next season. This means that a couple players are on the cusp of either making the roster, being cut, being traded, or getting demoted to the NBA D-League. One player to keep an eye on as the training camp starts is new Celtics’ wing, Perry Jones III.

Jones’ outlook

ALSO ON HOOPSHABIT: 25 Best Players To Play For The Celtics

Jones has a lot of great weapons on the offensive end, which is why the Celtics are going to take a close look at him during training camp. He can step out and shoot from beyond the arc, and he can post up in the paint. Jones’ versatility is also a plus because he can play multiple positions, even though his true position is probably on the wing.

Jones never really had a true chance to shine for the Oklahoma City Thunder during his time there because a player named Kevin Durant basically played the same position as Jones. When Durant was injured, Jones did step it up during some games, even some games without Russell Westbrook as well.

Jones could help out many teams in the NBA next season, and the Celtics could be one of them, but does he have a spot on the roster for next season?

Jones’ fit on the Celtics

Jones is a very versatile player that can play multiple positions, but the Celtics have many frontcourt players and guards, but they are a little short on the wings. Jones is primarily a wing, and if the Celtics decided to keep Jones he would play on the wing because of his ability to score and shoot. He also has great size for the wing, and on defense he could play in the frontcourt sometimes.

The Celtics have three true wing players for next season, Jonas Jerebko, R.J. Hunter, and Jae Crowder. Jones would be the fourth wing for the Celtics next season because all three of those players will be on the roster next season.

Jones’ size on the wing would give the Celtics a big advantage against some undersized wings around the league, and if Jones can shoot the basketball consistently from deep, he will be very dangerous.

The Celtics could use Jones, but the team has so many proven players on their roster and many new players that the team is not going to get rid of right now. There is no right answer for who the Celtics should get rid of.

Yes, the Celtics have way too many players in the frontcourt and in the backcourt, but some of the players have a lot of potential or they have proven themselves in the past. The problem is that not many of the Celtics’ players have great trade value, even their better players do not have the best trade value, which is why finalizing the roster is going to be a difficult task.

Will Jones be on the Celtics this season?

Keep a close eye on Jones during training camp because he is going to be fighting for a spot, and if he plays to his potential, he should be on the Celtics next season because the team does need wings. It would not be too surprising if the Celtics got rid of Jones, but his versatility and shooting ability deserves a spot on the Celtics or some other team in the NBA.

MY NOTE: Not being a fan of James Young, I see this as a no-brainer but we'll see beginning in about 10 days.

I will stand by my prediction of Jones being the starting small forward for the Cs this season.  Bob did mention that he may not be the best "fit" with some of the other starters and that could turn out to be true.  However, if Jones does not start he will play big minutes and will average at least 12 ppg and probably 7 rpg.

He will be motivated to do well since this will likely be his last NBA opportunity to earn a good next contract.  He either succeeds in Boston or starts heading down hill in a league where not many guys get paid as well for taking up the 11th through 15th rosters spots.  His rookie contract is up at the end of this year so I see this season as an either make it or break it season for him.  Hope he is aware of same.

If he is unable to beat out James Young, he does not deserve a spot in the NBA anyway.

Young is not a wing?

article lost me there, sorry.

maybe the writer thinks Young does not make the team, but he/she doesn't even list him as wing player?

last I looked Young wasn't cut yet and he isn't a Ball handler a Swing or a big either.

Perry will have to earn a roster spot for sure and may the best man win.

the battle may not end up being between Jones and Young however.
