Rockets Launch Past Celtics in OT 119-114 4/2/2010
This game looked like a carbon copy of the thunder game with Boston shooting well but the Rockets did too.
Defense is the name of the game and lately Boston cannot seem to stop teams even when the other teams are missing key guys like Ariza and Battier.
Ray Allen was buried on the bench for most of the game (played only 16 minutes before fouling out)
Horrible refs terrible calls, outrageous mistakes by the zebras. But give the rockets credit they knocked down 12-18 from deep.
The bright spots include Rajon Rondo 23 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steal. TA came off the bench and played very well scoring 12 points with 5 rebounds and 5 big steals. I still maintain that Tony is the best wing defender on this club and must be part of the Celtics playoff rotation.
The Celtics had a chance to win this one but going to the PP isolation where he burned valuable seconds off the clock before taking a tough turn around fallaway. It was not a very good play. No picks no movement and nothing going to the hoop.
Brooks and Budinger lit it up from the outside and Scola played well inside and out.
The Celtics were outrebounded again 41-35 and 15-11 on the offensive glass.
The Celtics seem to have lost their defensive identity.
Nate Robinson has disappeared.

Marquis Daniels has disappeared also, averaging 2.2 points a game his last 8.
Houston had three runs outscoring us by 10 or more points tonight: 35-18 (from down 22-11 to leading 46-29), 14-4 (from trailing 51-48 to leading 62-55) and closing out the game 10-0 from down 114-109 to winning 119-114.
Virtually impossible to win when you give up three runs like that and are outscored by 37 points in those stretches. They ourscored us by those 37 points (59 to 22) over a total of 20:53.
I know Sam loves those runs but not when the other guys are doing them.

they shot the lights out from 3,our rotations were not good,we can't cover perimeter,KG and Ray didn't show up.....refs seemed to give all big calls to Rockets,Pierce gets hit in the face no call,KG jumps no contact and Perk blocks shot, but call on KG? ALL just horrendous.....if we could just hit some fockin FT's we pull this game out

We shot 59.3% through three quarters (32 for 54). 37.9% in the fourth quarter and overtime (11 for 29). Same old story. Late collapse after late collapse. And when you get outshot 67% to 31% on threes it's gonna be a tough night. What's Rondo taking THREE of them for when he's a 21% shooter from out there (now actually 2 for his last 23 from beyond the arc)?

tied at the end of 4, i liked our chances, even w/o Ray, but it didn't have to go that far if (as cowens said) we'd hit our FT's like they were hitting theirs.
could've had it in regulation time ... ugh.
and you're all right about the guys who've been disappearing. i cringe when BB goes up without clearing some space first - he's gonna get stuffed. and he did.
bench guys who showed up include Tony most definitely (was it FIVE steals?) and yes, Sheed. and Shelden's been doing a good job with the limited minutes he's been getting. rebounding pretty well, and (unlike BB too often) he can put the ball back in the cup.
wondering what Sunday will bring ... i HATE betting against the guys in green, even though it's not looking good.

Re: Rockets Launch Past Celtics in OT 119-114 4/2/2010
I know it's a small thing but when we had a 2 point lead and the ball Tony got the ball on the wing heading for the hoop, he had an angle but probably knew he'd be fouled. There was about 24seconds left. Just wondered at the time if he should have turned away from the hoop and backed it out. There were still 20ish seconds on the shot clock. By the time Houstin realized they would have to foul he could have easeily run of another 5 maybe even 10 seconds. Of course all is for naught if he just had made both freebies. Same with Finley.
And why do we let them even shoot a trey to tie it?
I remember many times Ainge himself fouling the player before they could get the shot off. Send um to the line for 2 and as long as we take care of business rebounding and making the forthcomming foul shots we win.
Bottom line we make our freebies in the last 30 seconds and we win plain and simple.

I was thinking about that situation when it happened too..
He probably should have backed off/passed it to a more suitable FT shooter.
Tony acted on instinct and it is also what gives his good sides so you just gotta let it be. In general he was great yesterday.

Not dissin Tony at all Swede. He had a shot to make the lead 4 with a layup.
Hindsight is 20/20 esp after a loss. Tony played a very good game. I remeber just a couple games ago late he got an offensive board and initially looked to put it back up (he had been blocked just a few moments prior) and instead went to the corner with it and kicked it out front.
Should he have done it here? Perhaps.
At least our effort is there but the defense needs to tighten it up'
That said doesn;t it seem that unsung players seem to light it up on us? Sometimes we have them pretty well covered and they still step back find the Tommy Heishon1/2 inch that he likes to say..............and they BURY IT!!

Hey I would kind of rather have the big 3 having their issues and everybody else play good than the other way around.
Players like Pierce/KG/Allen can and will find ways to contribute when it matters.

Re: Rockets Launch Past Celtics in OT 119-114 4/2/2010
Only watched part of the first half, so I can't comment on the game as a whole.
1. Rondo was chasing Aaron Brooks around. Just like he chased Westbrook and Williams and everybody else the past few weeks. He's following these guys over the top of picks instead of trying to fight through them. Aaron Brooks, a good but not great player, held his own against Rajon Rondo, who is looking more and more over the past few weeks like a good but not great player. The two players I have been most concerned about is Rondo and Pierce. Rondo is looking like he focuses heavily on steals and not so much on positional defense and Pierce just looks like he's lost his game. He scored well last night, but it looks like he has trouble performing at his previously normal high level night-in-and-night-out.
2. Perk had a good game. Of course, Chuck Hayes is the shortest starting center in the history of the NBA at 6'6". 4 turnovers marred the effort.
3. Budinger lit up somebody.
In the part of the game I watched, they were shooting well on open shots. They were open because the weakside players were cheating to help the middle, leaving shooters with daylight. The reason why they are cheating to help the middle is because they are not playing good perimeter defense and haven't been playing good perimeter defense for weeks.
I don't recall ever seeing a game where Ray Allen fouled out this quickly.
Some bitching about the zebras. Does anybody at the league office review games? Probably not otherwise that's all they'd do. I'm sure every coach and fans has bitches about the zebras.
Not many games left for them to pull their heads out of their asses.

Re: Rockets Launch Past Celtics in OT 119-114 4/2/2010
When was the last time the Celtics dropped three straight consecutive home games?
I went back to the 2003-04 season and decided to stop since I still could not find s situation where Boston was in a homestand and dropped 3 straight.
Everybody can scored points but only the best teams can play defense.
What the heck is wrong with our defense? Should the Celtics play more zone and stop all the switching ? Do the endless expectations for rotating undermine a more natural rebounding position? Here is my evaluation of the players in terms of their defense.
Rondo is the Celtics best on the ball defender but becasue he is so agreesive, quick point guards can get by him or brush him off on screens. Neverless he can take the ball from anybody that he is guarding.
Tony Allen is the 2nd best defender on the ball and can play multiple defensive positions. He too is a gambler and has a real knack for finding attacking angles. At times he neglects to make the proper rotations but to his credit, Tony never knows when he will be riding the pine so he has not been able to get the minutes on a consistent basis.
Kendrick Perkins is a very good defender but lacks the foot speed at times to position himself. He leads the team in blocks and has developed into a solid help defender when the defense breaks down. He is the best overall big defender on the team.
Kevin Garnett is the second best big defender but has lost a step getting out on the peremeter to defend his man. And guys are getting past him on drives to the hoop. Keving has lost his quickness.
Wallace is the best post defender on this club but is horrible closing out beyond 8-10 feet. He is a step slow and a dollar short if his man steps away for open jumpers.
The rest of the team are average to below average defenders (Paul Pierce, Williams, Daniels, baby, Scals and Robinson) and Ray allen is the worst defender on the team.
Speaking of PP, last night he made a geat defensive play running down the court to block a shot (but they called it goal tending) But this was a very unusual play for PP. PP is a 'lazy defender" in general and does not close out on the perimeter and does not run back on defense.
Ray Allen is another poor defender that does a lot of reaching but cannot stay in front of his man.
So in sum you have 2 1/2 good defenders in the starting line up (RR, KP and KG) and two poor defenders in PP and RA. Off the bench you have one good defender in TA and a good post defender in Rasheed Wallace.
The Celtics have not addressed acquiring a long defender that can close out the perimeter.
Intensity is really a catch word for energy. This teams lacks the energy to go out there night in and night out and defend the court. I think in their collective minds they think they have a switch that they can turn on when the playoffs begin but while I keep waiting form them to hit the next gear, the season is dwindling away with only 7 games remaining. A team that was expected to be at the top or near the top of the heap have found themselves in a battle for 3rd place in the east.
The outcome of this season is very much in doubt.
Doc Rivers will need to re-think his way through the playoffs. The idea that they could shorten the rotation (thus playing the starters more minutes) could eliminate them in the 1st round. Ray Allen has started to slide again moving toward the end of the season so perhaps more rest for him would save his legs for the playoffs. KG has found his touch offensively but doc needs to monitor his minutes as well. PP needs to stay healthy.

Re: Rockets Launch Past Celtics in OT 119-114 4/2/2010
If I hadn't watched the game and someone had shown me only the following stats, I would have said, "Must have been enjoyable to watch the Celtics blow out another team":
Fast break points: Celtics 25, Rockets 9
Points in paint: Celtics 64, Rockets 26
Free throws taken: Celtics 37, Rockets 28
Shooting percentages: Celtics 52%, Rockets 51%
The fact that the Rockets shot 67% from the arc (to 31% for the Celtics) suggests to me that the Cs lack the ability to defend both the interior and the exterior simultaneously. Early in the game, Houston players were driving to the hoop so often that I was astounded to see their final "points in the paint" figure. Then, as the Celts interior defense began the stiffen, the Rockets just went outside and got continually open three-point shots. On one shot from the left corner, Brooks held the ball, pulled a pocket edition of "War & Peace" out of his jock, and was on page 13,097 when a Celtic made an abortive rush as Brooks casually drained the three.
The Celtics' help defense is predicated on rotations and timing. When other teams constantly set picks (as most do against the Celtics), slow rotations are as exposed as Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl.
Actually, I'm not sure whether the rotations are just tardy or the Celts on defense are as guilty as the Celts on offense in trying to do it individually. On defense, it seems that every time one Celtic blocks another shot, another Celtic comes from a different angle and crashes into the shooter. That might not be so egregious if the same two guys would actually gang up similarly when a rebound is available.
On defense, I'm sorry Pierce fans. I know Paul's a warrior, and I understand he led the team in scoring last night. But he has become Predictable Paul. When he turned around to look at Doc on that final overtime play, he looked like he had Cerebral Paulsy. By the time he actually made a move, everyone in the building knew his only option was a jumper. Duh!
And I'm simply not a fan of situations in which Rondo's one of the Celtics' leading scorers. On average, he scores 14% of the Celtics' points. When he scores as much as 20% (as he did last night), something's out of balance. Perhaps one repercussion is that his teammates aren't so alert in looking for the ball when he drives; there are too many bobbles of his passes.
When Ray's in the game, at least someone is usually moving without the ball (although his curl is sort of turning into a one-trick pony). When he's out of the game, the offense becomes moribund. Each successive pass on a given possession becomes more low-percentage than the previous one. Making the extra pass shouldn't mean taking the extra risk.
Against the Cavs, I'd like to see a reversal of minutes between Glen Davis and Shelden Williams. Just to try it out. We know the Cavs are going to block most of Glen's shots anyway. I'd like to see what happens if the Celtics sacrifice surer hands, one charge taken, and 0.4 offensive boards a game for equal but longer defense, an additional defensive rebound per game, and fewer lost possessions from blocked shots.
I also believe the Celtics should use Tony and Quis at only at the SG and SF positions respectively. At SG, I believe Tony gives them a net advantage over Quis in terms of rebounding and defense; and their differing penetration styles result in 30% more points per 36 minutes for Tony than for Quis. The height of Quis is probably needed to try to cover Lebron.
I'll never give up on this team. I continue to believe the execution (or lack of same) drives the energy on this team, not the reverse. I do NOT believe veteran starters should be rested because right now they need all the key players participating in fixing their execution problems, and Doc's doing a good job of managing their minutes.

Gawd, i'd LOVE to see that !!!!! Glen is not playing to his strengths and within his limitations lately, as seen by how often he's stuffed. when he's got a rebound and can CLEAR SOME SPACE FIRST he can get off an effective shot, but when he just ball-fakes and goes up, all too often he just eats the ball. thos offensive boards Glen gets are wasted when he just turns it over right away.
Shelden, on the other hand, can corral the ball AND get his shot back up in traffic underneath. we could definitely use that, and i agree that i'd like to see more of him.

Sam,
I remember, before I had to leave, that the Celts were killing the Rockets in the paint and on fastbreaks and yet the Rockets were ahead and I thought that was wierd. I figured that eventually it would pay off for us since eventually shooters get cold but layups are layups are layups. Didn't turn out that way.
This game turns stats upside down. Or, maybe, they just put them in their proper perspective.

Hi,
It was a game of missed opportunities (to win).
I hope Doc, instead of practice/shoot around, made everybody, except RA, to practice FT under pressure today.
I hope they'll continue to play 48 minutes sunday. After that Celtics have 2 more practice games with Bucks....

Sam:
I know you think Doc wants a veteran winger in with the bench and that you dont like Pierce there because he seems to not trust them or whatever.
What do you think about letting Finley/Tony having some more minutes with the starters so Ray can be the one playing with the bench instead?

Swede,
I could possibly see rotating Tony in a couple of minutes earlier than the rest of the bench in order to tighten the defense when the Celtics have carved out their usual lead and the other team is threatening to come back. But that move would be dependent on Pierce's being the designated floor-spacer on offense.
Frankly, I think it's more of a priority—and perhaps a more realistic goal in the few games that are left—to get Ray into the offense early.
I wonder whether Pierce, Perk, KG and Ray could absorb Nate into their "womb" for a few minutes a game, allowing Rondo to spend more time orchestrating the bench's game. I'd like to see him get some extended time with with Tony and Finley as running mates, and Finley being the floor-spacer.
Moreover, opposing teams have developed the habit of extending the time of their starters into the second quarter, giving them an advantage that often reverses the momentum of the game. I think Rondo's defense, in concert with Tony's, could be instrumental in negating that advantage.
These last few games will be most interesting. Will Doc feel the way you do and make some major lineup change? (Not very Doc-like at this juncture.) Will Marquis and/or Nate and/or Williams and/or Glen suddenly be placed in better positions to contribute? I thought the four of them would infuse the Celtics with valuable options. But, for one reason or another in each case, all four seem to be struggling to find their proper roles.

I agree on wanting to see Nate with the starters some.
Do not have a good solution on how to fit it in but it would be nice to give Rondo some relief and a chance to play with the bench. I think Rondos skills for distribution are really useful with the bench and I would not want to see Pierce and Rondo with the bench.
Just Rondo and the Bench.
