There are (2) choices under your Profile-Preferences that pertain to email alerts.
One choice will send an email when you receive a PM (private message). Most users leave this one on.
The second, will send an email when someone replies to a topic you have posted in. It is simply a thread watch feature. Most users leave this one off, as it can generate quite a bit of emails.
