Cavaliers Agree To Trade With Hawks For Kyle Korver
JAN 5, 2017 7:46 PM
The Atlanta Hawks are trading Kyle Korver to the Cleveland Cavaliers with Mike Dunleavy Jr. likely moving to a third team.
Atlanta will likely receive Cleveland's 2019 first round pick as part of the deal.
Korver will be a free agent in the offseason and is making $5.2 million this season. Korver is shooting .40.9 percent on three-pointers on 5.0 attempts per game this season for the Hawks.
The Cavaliers will be without J.R. Smith at shooting guard for several more weeks as he recovers from surgery on his thumb.
"From a basketball perspective, it's a great, great fit for me. And I know that," said Korver.

Re: Atlanta Trades Kyle Korver To Cleveland
Was watching the Hawks game last night and saw the interview with Korver.
The Cavs are about to make a short term rental to sure up their shooting. JR is gone for an extended period of time.
This move is salary dump for Atlanta even though $5 mill is not a lot of money. He was not going to get a new contract down here. Hard to really figure out what the Hawks are trying to do. They have Milsap ready to test free agency and several other players with expiring contracts. They gave Howard a Brinks' truck filled with Cash but he is not a player to build around. Milsap plans to exercise his option and the Hawks will not be able to move him unless he commits to signing an extension with the team he is traded to.

Report: Mike Dunleavy wants buyout, has yet to report to Hawks after trade
By Kurt Helin

The Cleveland Cavaliers made the win-now move of upgrading Mike Dunleavy for Kyle Korver in a trade, at the cost of a first-round pick.
Korver was emotional about leaving Atlanta, a city and team he loved. However, he’s in Cleveland now ready to bolster the Cavaliers title hopes.
Dunleavy has yet to show up in Atlanta, reports Marc Stein and Marc Spears of ESPN.

The Hawks and Dunleavy's representatives, according to one source close to the situation, were "working through it" as of Sunday night.

The Hawks do not have long-term plans to keep Dunleavy around, the trade took a couple of days to go through in part because the two sides were looking for a third team to take Dunleavy. Nobody was found, so the Hawks brought him in as a contract/body that could be part of coming trades for Paul Millsap/Thabo Sefolosha/Tim Hardaway Jr.
Understandably, Dunleavy would like to control his own destiny: Get a buyout, become a free agent, sign with a playoff bound team. The leverage he has is that the trade does not officially go through until he reports and takes a physical.
I’d be surprised if this takes long to get sorted out, but it could hold up Korver suiting up for the Cavaliers by a few days (he was expected to play Tuesday against Utah).

MY NOTE: I don't understand Dunleavy's motivation. Atlanta is in 4th place in the East. He wants to go to a playoff team? They are a playoff team already without him. Cleveland cannot resign him for 1 year and I don't think GSW has any openings. He has to be on a championship-bound team, and that's it? Regardless, if he doesn't report then the trade falls apart. Korver goes back to Atlanta (I'm sure that will make him happy, going back to the team that unloaded him) and Dunleavy goes back to the team that unloaded him but he gets to piggyback on LeBron.
