Oliver LaFayette played last night, but during the game (and well after) he didn't show up in the box score. This morning, he is represented in the box score and it looks like he did alright for himself.

Over 21 minutes, 7 points on 3/6 shooting, 4 boards, 2 assists with one turnover.

Here is an interesting article about the game:

http://www.celticsblog.com/2010/4/15/1423303/not-just-a-meaningless-game-for?ref=yahoo

"This isn't where it ends for Lafayette. By signing the contract with the Celtics, Lafayette is guaranteed a spot on a Celtics Summer League roster with the hopes of landing a spot on the team's regular season roster next season. With a possible vacancy at the backup PG position next season, is it Lafayette's job to lose?"

I was impressed. It's a very small sample size, but considering he doesn't know any of the C's plays he did pretty well for himself. He looked decent on defense too...not so much in the team scheme, but man to man he was alright. He has a nice looking shot. It was nice seeing Ray taking the time to teach him the plays from the bench. He's going to make a great coach someday if he so chooses!

Quite frankly, this kinda blows my mind a bit.

Here we are, trying to get into a groove and generate some Ubuntu for the playoffs, and they're showcasing Nate's possible replacement.

I'm not saying Nate should or should not be gone next year, but to play this kid NOW is odd and, hopefully not, counterproductive.

Maybe they're inside Nate's head and think he needs a kick in the ass and that he'll respond well to his competition.

Interestingly, 6'8" hometown favorite Tony Gaffney, possible replacement for Quis, didn't play.

Bob,
Mike said that there was some kind of snafu with paperwork, therefore Gaffney couldn't play.

That must have pissed off Gaffney.

Still don't get it.

I don't see a problem with them playing the new kid. This was essentially a garbage game anyway. The only starter who played was Rondo. Doc has already gone on record to say that Nate is not going to be part of the set playoff rotation. He may see minutes because of foul trouble or if we need some instant offense, but I still don't see how playing Lafayette last night effects that. It's not like Nate was benched in his favor, they played equal minutes. I think the major reason Lafayette played at all is that he's an expendable body.

I can understand wishing the Celtics used this game to prepare for the playoffs, but the fact is that they weren't trying to do that, they were just trying to finish the season healthy. For that reason I see no problem with playing a kid that doesn't factor into our playoff hopes.
