CELTICS, GERMAN FORWARD THEIS AGREE TO TWO-YEAR DEAL
MY NOTE: This is just an announcement thread, to get people's attention. For more information and videos about this player please see International's thread about him. This is not the first time International has brought value to this board. He was the one who educated us about Porzingis and Saric, just to name two players, two years before they were drafted.

BOSTON – Free agency is still a couple weeks away, but it appears the Boston Celtics have already looked into increasing its depth in the frontcourt.
German forward Daniel Theis of Germany has reportedly come to terms with the Celtics on a two-year contract.

The 25-year-old power forward/center averaged 9.6 points and 4.6 rebounds for Brose Bamberg of Germany, while shooting 41 percent from 3-point range and 64.5 percent on two-point attempts.
He has been an important contributor on a squad that has won three straight national titles in addition to the 2017 German National Cup.
As far as his role with the Boston Celtics, that remains to be seen.
With Amir Johnson, Jonas Jerebko and likely Tyler Zeller all not returning next season, it’s imperative for the Celtics to find ways to bolster their frontcourt.
Two of Boston’s first-round picks from a year ago, Gershon Yabusele and Ante Zizic, spent last season playing overseas but are likely to be with the Celtics for this upcoming season.
Boston is also reportedly in the running for soon-to-be free agent Blake Griffin, who had some hefty praise for the city of Boston on Monday.

Danny Ainge: Boston Celtics talking to German big man Daniel Theis about possible contract
Posted on June 19, 2017 at 5:45 PM
BY JAY KING
BOSTON -- Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge did not confirm a report the team has agreed to sign German big man Daniel Theis, but said the two sides are involved in contract discussions.
"We did not sign anybody today," Ainge said on a conference call Monday afternoon. "But we are in talks with a player from Germany, yes."
While it's not clear how much guaranteed money Theis would land over the course of a potential contract, or if he would be anything more than a summer league/training camp pickup, David Pick expects the deal would be for multiple years:

Theis, 25, won the Defensive Player of the Year award in his German league this past season. In three leagues combined, the stretch big man averaged 9.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. He shot 33.3 percent on limited attempts from behind the arc and was an efficient finisher in the pick-and-roll, according to Synergy Sports:

Daniel Theis was among the top finishers in Europe in 2017 shooting 72% at the rim. Excellent roll man. Also shot an eFG% of 50% on set Js.

Some highlights of Theis can be found above.

MY NOTE: An excellent roll guy. That is excellent. The NBA is a PnR league. From the sound of this article, however, it is starting to sound like he only got a summer league contract. Step 1.

Plays above the rim. Scrappy fighting for rebounds.
Low cost option to sure up our front line maybe.

Don't think they can sign him yet due to salary cap ramifications, but I think there is an agreement.

After Theis was initially linked to the Celtics weeks ago, team president of basketball operations Danny Ainge admitted he hoped to sign the big man.
According to the Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach, the first year of Theis' contract will be fully guaranteed. The deal will likely be for the minimum or close to it. The 6-foot-9, 215-pound Theis averaged 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds overseas last season.

MY NOTE: No word yet on exactly how much it will be, but his contract is guaranteed, for at least one year, so he will be on the team next year. I cannot see a scenario where he is shuttling back-and-forth from Maine. This is a veteran professional player with defensive bonafides, which also might be why he isn't playing in summer league with the rookies and other players on the bubble. It's tough to see Jerebko go, but the combination of this guy's 2x DPOY credentials and cheapy cheap contract makes it a no-brainer.

FWIW, Theis ranked in the 94th percentile among all German League defenders, per @Synergy Sports Tech data. Allowed a mere 0.714 points per play.
