The first thing most observers notice when watching Jayson Tatum is the offense -- excellent footwork, tough shot-making and plenty of athleticism and versatility. That combination of skills makes for a great highlight reel.

It should come as little surprise to Boston Celtics fans that Brad Stevens wasn't watching highlight reels when he was evaluating the team's youngest acquisition, however.

"I'm looking at it more with a critical eye than the people that put together the highlights and see the one-foot fade aways and all that stuff," Stevens said in an appearance on Chris Mannix's podcast Monday.

Stevens added that while it's "great to be able to score in isolation," he evaluated Tatum on the other side of the ball.

"I was really impressed with -- and almost pleasantly surprised by -- his defensive ability," Stevens said. "I thought he did a good job of keeping guys in front. I thought he did a good job of using his length and guarding a number of different positions. ... Offensive stuff is going to come easy for him. Maybe not easy, but he has a natural scoring ability. (In Summer League) I wanted to see how he would pick up what we are trying to do defensively -- how his length would impact others, how he would pick up the off-the-ball schemes -- and I thought he did a pretty good job."

Tatum, of course, was the surprise selection by the Celtics during the 2017 draft. After Boston won the top overall selection, courtesy of the Brooklyn Nets, the assumption was that they would select point guard Markelle Fultz first overall -- a move which might have created some awkward questions for star guard Isaiah Thomas, who is due a big pay day next offseason.

Instead, the Celtics traded down to No. 3 where they took Tatum. He impressed in Summer League, but as Stevens noted, to earn minutes on a team crowded with talented wings, Tatum will need to prove that he can defend multiple positions in addition to scoring in a variety of ways.

That won't be easy for a 19-year-old, suddenly thrown into a league full of grown men considerably more talented than anyone he has faced before. While Stevens noted that the Celtics don't expect Tatum to cram six years of weight training in before the season starts in October, he will have to make some adjustments and learn by being thrown straight into the fire.

"There's going to be some times when you are going to have to guard someone stronger than you, and you're going to have to figure it out," Stevens said.

Interestingly, when discussing the help Tatum will have defensively in the Celtics front court, Stevens mentioned another rookie: Semi Ojeleye.

"We can mix and match a little bit," Stevens said. "If he's playing with Jae, Jae can guard up a spot. If he's playing with Semi, Semi can guard up a spot. If he's playing with Gordon, Gordon can guard up a spot."

Ojeleye has seemed like a lock to make the final cut, but while his money was guaranteed, his roster spot technically wasn't: The Celtics currently have 16 players with guaranteed money on the roster.

The Boston Celtics signed Jabari Bird to a two-way contract over the weekend. Here's a closer look at the roster, and who might be cut before the regular season.

Stevens complimented Ojeleye's versatility during Summer League, however, calling it "enormous" and something the Celtics could use right out of the gate. Ojeleye is powerfully built and seemingly capable of playing any position between the three and the five.

In any case, Tatum seems like a lock to receive playing time in his rookie season at whichever position fits best.

"He's going to have to use his mind and use his length and compete," Stevens said. "That's just ultimately what you have to do."

Both of Tatum and Olejeye are seemingly getting more props (before their first season) than any of the last few years of picks, including Brown, got from Stevens.

There is still the "earning" what you get philosophy in place, but these guys are getting really good reviews at least so far from the head coach.

I hope that Stevens is 100% correct about both guys.

Fact is, at least at Duke, Tatum could always flat out defend. His speed, length and court sense make him a candidate to adjust well and quickly to defending on NBA courts. Semi looks pretty good too, and may be able to step up his defensive skills. I think Semi will need some work in the G-League, but he looks promising.

NYCelt,

I don't watch college sports and you avidly do, so I readily accept your opinion there.  I always count on you and other board members to educate me on up-and-coming college players entering the draft. I would be blind-as-a-bat without all of you.

In the summer league (admittedly a bubble of a bubble, but the players on that bubble were good enough to climb onto it, as opposed to players on teams during the NCAA season that were guarded by Tatum who were not good enough to be invited to summer league) I thought Semi's defense was outstanding.  He was very physically, and effectively, bodying up guys quite a bit bigger than him and he showed good lateral movement too.  Tatum's defense was ok, neither stellar nor standing out for its weakness.

Semi will almost certainly be in Maine for much of the year.  He isn't going to get the minutes he should get in Boston unless Theis is a complete bust (and, if that's so, then God Help Us!, for we have no depth there) and so will be shipped off to Lobster Land.  Tatum probably won't because he's going to get his minutes in Boston.  Although with Hayward, Crowder and Brown also competing for the minutes at that general position there might not be as many minutes for Tatum as we might think.  144 total player minutes for 2, 3, 4 with those 4 players plus Morris and Smart.  That's 24mpg each, but Hayward and Smart will almost certainly get more than that average, which means the others will get <24mpg.  Crowder getting <24mpg?  Either not happening or not happy.  If not happening, then that squeezes Morris (who will be needed up front because of our front court thinness) or Brown or Tatum.  My money says Morris gets the minutes, Brown gets more than the 17mpg he got last year (almost certainly 20+) which means it's Tatum who loses out and might mean him getting to know I-95 some.

Imagine, the luxury of saying a #3 pick has to go to the G-League to get minutes because of all the talent ahead of him on the depth chart.  Makes me smile.

bob,

If your assessment of the talent level at the 2,3,and 4 spot is accurate - can we expect to see a trade involving one of those players to shore up weaknesses in an other area ?

Semi reminds me of Crowder a lot, maybe its how they are built but I think they will have the same type of game. Which means to me IF Semi shows he can play , even as a deep bench player now Crowder may be the guy moved.

I'd be surprised if Semi goes to the G-League and I'd be absolutely shocked if Tatum went. By Dec last year I was calling for Brown to go so he could get minutes. He never went. Tatum will get his chance to play and so will Semi. With Jabari (I just can't seem to call him Bird lol) and Kadeem on two way contracts and 4 associate contracts, they probably have that covered. The more promising players seem to ride the bench in Boston. I just don't recall that level of player spending much time in Maine no matter what I was thinking. We've expected trades since KG came here. How many preseason trades has Danny approved? When was the last one? I think that we see things as possibilities that Danny doesn't. We do have one extra contract but I suspect that eating the contract is as likely as a small trade.

Tatum seems to be very advanced offensively, and I believe that his offensive skills will keep him in Boston all season. Any Maine crabs he wants will have to be purchased in and around Boston.

I think that he can average 8 points per game if he gets 12 minutes per game. Such offensive production along with maybe 3-4 rebounds will get him regular minutes in a varsity uniform.

Brown is going to play some at guard, Crowder will play some 4, and Tatum will take some minutes at the 3 spot and also play some at the 4 position against second stringers on other teams where he will be very tough to stop.
