Philadelphia center Joel Embiid has agreed to a five-year, $148 million designated rookie scale max extension, league sources told ESPN.

MY NOTE:  He has played a grand total 31 games in his career.  He was drafted in 2014.  This is his 4th year in the league.  31 games.

He on average plays about 10 games per year.

should have waited out the season to see if he can play a full season. they would be able to offer him the same contract at the end of the year as a restricted FA.

  Oden was a bust after a 6 year career averaging 17+  games a year,  Embid plays 10 a year for 4 seasons and beyond set for life unless he goes antoine walkering..

The Sixers were caught between a rock and a hard place. Lock up a supreme talent early but take the risk of a career derailed by injury, or, he stays healthy, plays great, is miffed that the organization doesn't show him love with an extension and he walks after his RFA year. In a sense, the Sixers had to do what they did. All they can do now is hope the basketball gods are kind to them and the kid's injury history is just that.

The Sixers just screwed their salary cap going forward.

The article I read said that there is some sort of protection for injury, but it was vague enough that I don't know what that protection is. Anyone else see this, or know anything about some sort of injury clause? Also, the contract could be even bigger if he is all-nba (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) or mvp. I have never heard of NBA contracts being so conditional? Could NBA contracts be moving closer to NFL contracts? How is this possible under the current agreement??

It is called an insurance policy.

I think Philly pulled the trigger too soon.  His injury history is a bright red flag.

If you want to look real silly be a fool and bet on Philly.

Is this signing one of the all time biggest financial gambles by any team in the history of the NBA?

I know that he is very talented, but $150 M for a guy who has only been able to play 31 games since being drafted three years ago.

If you are talking dollar amount, then this is by far the biggest gamble.

There are few teams in professional sports with a worse combination of bad luck and bad judgment than the Sixers.

Reports on the deal state that the contract is loaded with exclusions and clauses for injury...
