WALTHAM -- Boston Celtics forward Marcus Morris is expected to miss at least the first week of the regular season due to right knee soreness, according to head coach Brad Stevens.
Stevens said Morris has been dealing with the issue since arriving to training camp. He is expected to undergo reevaluation sometime within the next 10-14 days.
"With him getting here (to training camp) a little bit late, we feel like he needs a little more of a preseason," Stevens said after practice Sunday. "They've done all the testing and structurally the knee is in good shape, but I think it is a quick turnaround to get here last week and play in a regular season game. It's going to be a little bit of time probably before he hits the court again."
After missing the first week and a half of training camp for an aggravated assault trial, Morris said he needed to improve his conditioning and drop a bit of weight. He did not mention any knee soreness publicly at the time, but the team decided after Saturday's practice to be cautious with the issue.
"It's something he came into camp with it bothering him a little bit," Stevens said. "He was able to go through everything. He's actually structurally improved, he's gotten stronger, feels better, but we just felt like after watching him practice (Saturday) and then talking to him, we felt like he's not quite full go. Better to be on the safe side. It's a long year. He's a really important part of our team. If he's at 80 or 85 percent now, let's get him to 100 instead of risking that getting lower or (it being) something you're dealing with all season."
With Morris out, Stevens hinted the Celtics will likely start rookie Jayson Tatum against the Cleveland Cavaliers. There could be bench minutes available in Boston's frontcourt.

throwing them to the Cleveland Wolves?
we all know LeBron WILL be on his A-Game on opening night against Irving...right?
lets hope we play well overall, anyway.

It would not look good if LeBron plays, coming off an ankle sprain, and we lose because we know they will be better when IT is back.

Hi,
So far, all my Cavs fans friends tell me that Lebron's going to sit out the opener.
As for Morris being out for a week or whatever, I think it's a blessing in disguise. It'll give Tatum a lot of PT. Similar to what happened last season to JB. I just hope that JT turns out to be as many have predicted him to be, aka future all-star.

Don't overlook the fact that that the Celts shipped out 8 players that totaled 701 made 3 pointers last year - while bringing in 4 players that totaled 444 made 3 pointers last year. If part of the teams game plan is to be high ranked in 3 point shooting this year they have considerable ground to cover to make up for the overall loss of 257 3 pointers from last years roster - when they ranked 3rd (ahead of number 4 Golden State)

I agree.
If Jaylen Brown is one of the starters, he has to improve his 3pt shooting.
Tatum will eventually become very good from the 3pt line.
