Boston Celti Celtics Wrap: Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum Dominate Knicks In 110-89 Win

NESN by Nicholas Goss on Tue, Oct 24, 2017 at 9:51PM

The Boston Celtics climbed back to .500 with a resounding 110-89 win over the New York Knicks at TD Garden on Tuesday night. The C’s led by 20-plus points for large stretches of the game, as second-year forward Jaylen Brown (23 points) and rookie forward Jayson Tatum (22 points) led the way offensively. Kyrie Irving chipped in 20 and Al Horford added 13 points in a dominant performance by Boston’s starters. The Celtics improved to 2-2 with the victory, while the Knicks dropped to 0-3. Here’s how it all went down.

STARTING FIVE PG: Kyrie Irving SG: Jaylen Brown SF: Jayson Tatum PF: Al Horford C: Aron Baynes

BIRTHDAY BROWN The first quarter was the Jaylen Brown show. He celebrated his 21st birthday by scoring 13 points in the first 10 minutes. His second 3-pointer capped a 10-0 run for the C’s. He also threw down a sweet reverse jam. Brown finished the quarter with 13 points (5-for-8 shooting, 2-for-4 from 3-point range), two rebounds, one block and a steal. Irving added 11 points on 3-for-4 shooting and a 5-for-5 mark from the foul line. Boston led 30-17 at the end of the quarter.

YOUNG GUNS LEAD THE WAY Tatum continued Boston’s dominance by scoring 12 points in first 4:25 of the second quarter. Him and Brown finished the first half with 30 points combined, just three less than the entire Knicks team as the Celtics led 54-33 at halftime. Knicks superstar forward Kristaps Porzingis scored just two points on 1-for-8 shooting with three rebounds in the first half. Enes Kanter was the lone bright spot for New York with 16 first-half rebounds.

NO LUCK FOR THE KNICKS The Celtics kept attacking and led 77-60 after 36 minutes. They also had 22 assists on 28 made field goals through three quarters, which helps illustrate the exceptional ball movement and playmaking the C’s exhibited. The bench wasn’t much of a factor as the Celtics starters accounted for 66 of the team’s 77 points in 36 minutes.

FULL 48-MINUTE EFFORT The Knicks showed no resistance in the last 12 minutes. Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. finished the game a combined 5-for-25 from the field with just 18 points. Daniel Theis provided some very good minutes off the bench, scoring 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting with four rebounds in 21 minutes. Backup point guard Terry Rozier provided eight points, six rebounds and six assists in a solid all-around performance off the bench. Brown and Tatum became the first Celtics duo age 21 or younger to score 20-plus points in the same game.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE GAME A sweet put-back dunk by Tatum in the early minutes.

UP NEXT The Celtics head out on the road for a Thursday night game against the Bucks in Milwaukee. It’s scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.

Birthday boy Jaylen Brown leads Celtics to 110-89 win over Knicks

NBC SPORTS BOSTON By A. Sherrod Blakely October 24, 2017 9:52 PM

BOSTON – Jaylen Brown turned 21 years old on Tuesday and it seemed everyone was in the mood to give him gifts – even the New York Knicks.

Brown got open look after open look against the Knicks’ porous defense, and the birthday boy made them pay with a game-high 23 points in Boston’s 110-89 victory.

The 23 points were a season-high for the second-year guard/forward who came into the game second on the team in scoring (17.3 points) to Kyrie Irving (20.0 points per game).

As well as Brown played, he wasn’t the only Celtics player New York had problems with defending.

Jayson Tatum led a second unit in the second quarter that really put the Knicks on their heels, scoring nine of his 22 points in the quarter as Boston pulled ahead by as many as 21 points – the margin of their lead at the half (54-33). Tatum finished with a career-high 22 points.

While his numbers weren’t huge, there was no mistaking the impact Al Horford had on the game. He spent most of his time on the floor defending Kristaps Porzingis who came into the game having scored at least 30 points in each of New York’s first two games which had not been done by a New York Knick since Patrick Ewing at the start of the 1993-1994 season.

But Porzingis never got into any kind of rhythm with Horford contesting most of his shots, or simply pushing him away from the spots he wanted to get to.

Horford also managed his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds to go with five assists.

The defense played by Horford and Aron Baynes (he got the start with Marcus Smart out with a left ankle sprain for the second straight game) added up to a dismal first half for Porzingis who had two points while missing seven of his eight shot attempts. He would finish with 12 points despite missing 11 of his 14 shots from the field.

Boston managed to continue to keep a comfortable cushion between itself and the Knicks all game game. For New York (0-3), the loss marked the team's worst start since they opened the 2009-2010 season with three straight defeats in what was a Knicks team that won just 29 games.

The Celtics’ control of the game continued in the second half, even when they went with lineups that featured a trio of rookies (Jayson Tatum, Daniel Theis and Semi Ojeleye) who are collectively finding ways to contribute.

Of course Tatum has been the headliner throughout training camp, and that hasn’t changed now that the games actually count.

He delivered his strongest offensive showing to date, tallying a career-high 22 points. And Theis continues to provide some much-needed energy when he steps on the floor, tallying a career-high 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.

As for New York, they look like a team with issues that run much deeper than their lack of talent.

While Porzingis is the focal point of what they do, there’s no real feel or fluidity to what’s supposed to happen around him.

You have perimeter players who are looking shot-first before moving the ball. And the team’s big men rarely get the ball in the post and because of that, they don’t kick it out to shooters even when the defense collapses and their perimeter teammates are open.

So as good as it may feel for the Celtics to have won this game convincingly, it has to be put in perspective.

The New York Knicks are a bad team that’s going to be among the worst teams in the NBA this season.

Because of that, the Celtics simply did what they should do to teams like that and that’s beat them, convincingly.

Thanks, 112288!!!

GINO TIME!!!

Great game by everyone.  Tatum and Brown are blossoming.  Theis with 11 points, 2 boards and 2 blocks.

Semi with some good defense on Zinger, who had a miserable game.  He is/was the #2 scorer in the NBA coming into tonight.  Brown helped too.

Baynes on Kanter let Horford defend Zinger.  That's a big plus.  Kanter had a killer night on the boards with 19, 9 offensive, but Zinger is by far the more dangerous.  Being able to have Horford on him is HUGE.

It's the Knicks, so let's not get TOO excited, but we looked good and they have a big front court.  We're up to 2-2.

Can't wait to read the Comments from the Other Side tomorrow.  Heheheh.

I am waiting for Morris to play, this could be real interesting where we begin to dominate the boards for rebounds.

The Knicks are a bad team, but this produces confidence we will take care of all teams under .500. The Celtics will just have to figure out how to put together 48 minutes against good teams.

We are 2-2 despite Kyrie looking off. Gordon Hayward had a historic and terrifying injury, but that's looking like a best case scenario moving forward. Tonight was needed.

I'm thinking we really don't need Morris, love the experience Tatum is getting and the great thing among many is he is able to defend at the 4 and ofcourse the 3. This kid is just getting started and right now Jaylen and Jason are both exceeding my expectations. Tatum might have already found his 3 point stroke as have been reading for years he is a pure shooter, well he looks a lot closer to 6'9" already and can block shots at this level too.

I was saying to my son tonite, as much as I loved AB, Jaylen is going to be a much more impactful player, he's coming all game now and is attacking and using those gifts....and his 3 point stroke looks better and better. We have to beat up the weak teams, that's what the top teams do. Our defense an Zinger was great, as was our overall defense.

Morris is good depth, but his stats don't look too impressive. I could see him helping more in the playoffs when the older players seem to take over. Tatum is a lot better as a rookie than Brown was. Morris reminds me of Theis, Jerebko, Bass, Crowder, Olynyk and Humphries. They are nice to have just in case, but they don't seem to be starters on a championship team which is the goal. Tatum could be our best player within a year or two. I doubt Morris can match what we've seen so far from the rookie. I hope he doesn't cause any issues. He might expect to start or at least get big minutes. Maybe he will, but he's kind of short and overrated, like Jae for how they play.

Celts have improved in the rebounding department.

The last 2 seasons, reason why Celts had a tendency to lose to sub .500 teams is because guys like Hernangomez would suddenly become All-Star big men against smaller Celtic players.

This season, the Celts are taller and longer.
Rebounding will not be an issue this season.

It was the first complete game from the Celts this season. They did what they were supposed to in their system, offensively and defensively. The practice and success will help them build for more success against better teams. Kyrie had his best game of the season.

By the Way, an official and more public welcome to our newest member, Phil Pressey, who joined us for his first posts on the Game On! thread last night.  He made some excellent points last night as well as what we see here.

Nice to have you aboard, Phil.  Like voting, post early and often!  (that was a joke, not a political statement...)

Okay so the Celtics beat down the Knicks.  However in this league you have to play the good, the bad and the ugly.  The Knicks fall into the latter category.  Nevertheless we will gladly take the win.

JB and JT continue to play impressive basketball in the early stages of this season.

Most noticeable improvement for Jaylen is his 3 point shooting and overall understanding of how and when to get his shots.  He is learning fast how to read the defenses and is using his high end athleticism to beat his opponent.  He needs to spend more time practicing his free throws.  If he can consistently knock down his free throws he is probably a high teens low twenties scorer this year.  With Hayward gone for the year Jaylen has moved into the 2nd scoring option for Boston and so far he is delivering the goods.

The comparison between Jason Tatum and Paul Pierce are real.  We always here about this player being compared to that player and a lot of times it is just a lot of hype.  In this case it is no hype.  Tatum is as poised as any 19 year old player that has come into the league in a long time.    He seems to get better each game.  He defense has been very good and he is shooting the ball with a lot of confidence.  His future is bright.

These two #3 picks in back to back year has set the stage for winning well into the future.

Baynes is giving us the mass and toughness in the middle.  He logged 22 minutes last night.  He did not have great stats but you can see that Boston has a different dynamic with him in the lineup.

The Celtics will be a better team with the Marcus's.  Neither are big time offensive players but both of them are tough as nails and will not back down from anyone.  With them recovering from minor injuries it has given other guys like theis a chance to get some minutes and this bodes well for the depth that the Celtics will need to meet the challenges of a long and grueling campaign.

Morris is supposed to return on Monday.  I have not heard when Smart will return.

Real tough road games coming up against The Bucks and the Heat.  Let's see is Stevens has come up with a defensive plan to slow down the freak.

Hi,
I wish that the next 60 games were like the last one.
Also, due to the unfortunate events (Hayward, Smart, Morris injuries) JB and JT have so much PT - I believe it'll dramatically speed up their development.

Really interesting article about Kyrie, biding his time and seeing the big picture as being more important than short term stats or personal recognition.

I think the Celtics are still a year or more away from being true contenders, so any experience that Tatum, Brown, Rozier, Smart and the other young players on the team gain - will only benefit the team over the long haul. So Kyrie can and likely will still take over games when necessary. But I really like the way he is playing it so far this year.

I agree they're a year or two away from being true contenders.

The last piece of the puzzle is what we get from the 2018 Lakers pick or 2019 Kings pick.

The great thing about the long term future is that the team still has a significant number of future first round draft assets. The 2018 Laker pick could be huge. If not they will cash in in 2019.

This team will need to add a young PF/C who can play with and learn from AH.

Danny's decision to trade the #1 pick this year is already paying dividends. The value of getting 2 picks for one was savvy.

The trade down then let Danny use a top pick to target Kyrie, a PG who he felt could immediately lift the team and be a long term star while also maintaining the potential of a top pick.

The Celtics now have the best Defense in the East in limiting opponents points per game.

It is very early in the season but you have to like what we are seeing.

The defense is probably ahead of their offense at this point.

Sure, it was the Knicks, but in reality it was the future. This was a glimmer game.

We are seeing a team that doesn't have to have a set lineup or substitution pattern. We can play the matchups because Danny has done such an excellent job of assembling a talented and dedicated roster.

No G, no Marcus nor the other, no problem. It's about getting better in the moment on this team. Brad hasn't come up with some flashy term like Ubuntu, but his approach is having the same effect. Bringing the team together on the same page, even if it isn't the right one. Gotta love that.

Tomorrow will be a chance for retribution. In a sense it will be the first true test of the season and the new lineup. It's the beginning of the 78 game schedule that remains. It's a real opportunity to gauge the changes of preseason 2.

I'm hoping the Marcus's will come back next week so that we can see how these guys handle better competition than the hapless Knickerbockers. We will need them both to be 100% this season. We don't need a reinjury to derail what seems to be happening in the growth curve of this team.

I've never bought into the notion that this team can't compete for a championship this season. All those who don't think this way should clean those green shades. Wink
