TATUM UPDATE

ESPN BOSTON -- Boston Celtics rookie Jayson Tatum sat out the second half of Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers due to right ankle soreness.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens said Tatum will undergo further testing Thursday after complaining of soreness during the second quarter of Wednesday's 107-96 triumph at TD Garden.

Stevens said Tatum was fitted with a walking boot after Wednesday's game as a precaution.

"He had imaging here. He's got a sore right ankle and he's going to have more imaging [Thursday], at which point they'll let us know what they find in that," said Stevens. "I don't know anything else. I guess he had some -- he must've felt it at some point, right there, right before he came out he asked to be taken out. And then went back in the [locker room] and they ruled him out for the rest of the game. He's in a walking boot to be safe tonight, and then he'll be reexamined tomorrow."

Tatum, the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft, finished Wednesday's game with five points, one rebound, one assist, one steal and one block in nine minutes of action. Stevens said he believes Tatum was injured during tonight's game but said the rookie did not recall a specific incident.

be down to 5 players if this keeps up.

Certainly no Cs fan wants any injuries, but sprained/sore feet are part of the game.

Eventually, enough injuries to starters may result in a loss or two, but the NBA carries 15 man rosters for just this reason.

Someone fills in on Friday if Tatum is unavailable.

I wish we had 15 players on our roster right now.

last time I counted we have 14 , minus Hayward...that's 13.

Horford and Tatum down to 11.

have to call up Bird to dress 12.

I remember that Tatum sprained his ankle a few games ago. he will probably miss a few games.

Every year some injuries require teams to go deep into their bench. This latest rash of injuries is a challenge for this team.

How good are the Celtics? we are about to find out.

No official word on Jayson Tatum's right ankle injury, but the Celtics are listing him as questionable for Fri game vs #Hornets, w/Al Horford (concussion) already ruled out.

I thought you didn't trust medical reports from sports teams. Quite a leap to go from "questionable" to "possible", and then read that as "nothing serious".

I still don't trust medical reports. I am curious as to when the injury occurred. If it is just a cumulative thing and not a single event, what does that say for him in the long term.

To be specific, what I said is I don't trust DANNY'S ad hoc medical updates.  

As long as I'm nitpicking, I would think that going from "no way, Jose!" to "Absolutely!", "possible" would come before "questionable".  "Possible" means it isn't impossible, "Questionable" means it is possible, it could happen, but is uncertain.  If a player could play, but is unlikely, that infers they are aren't far off (for injuries only, not Coaches - DNP).  70% vs 100%, 80% vs 100%, something like that.  Hayward is not "questionable". There is no question about him.  3 weeks ago Marcus Morris was not questionable, he wasn't ready yet, he was a "no".  Horford is not "questionable" neither, he is a "no" either because of his symptoms are severe or the NBA's concussion protocols prohibit a return that quickly no matter what. There is no question about Horford or Hayward playing. If Tatum is listed as "questionable" that tells me someone on the medical staff will be asked a question about it on Friday. It will depend upon how quickly he heals and not that his injury is severe enough to require extended rest or surgery.  Days or weeks, at most, not months.  

Don't bother going looking for these standards, I'm making them up as I go along.  Can't trust me either.

I am not a doctor, but it was pretty obvious that our offense and defense missed this kid in the second half last night.

Hope he is back very soon.

Am I the only one that remembers that Tatum twisted the ankle a few games back.  He kept playing.  My guess is he may have tweaked it again.  Sprained ankles can stay sore for a while so you have to stay off of them.

Celts missed his 3pt shooting in the 2nd half.

I see no reason to rush him back. Let him stay off the ankle for a few more games.

Brad will have a chance to squeeze a bit more out of guys who do not get a lot of minutes. We should be able to play with the Hornets with or without both Horford and Tatum.

Totally agree+1

A good choice if we sit Tatum and Horford. It's a long season and wise to try and avoid persistent injuries. Being in the concussion protocol, I don't think there's any choice on Horford yet anyway.

Tatum's ankle doesn't sound like anything unusual, rest is normally what's needed. Horford having a possible second concussion in two years is potentially troubling, especially since he's had one or two others in the past. That one is going to need some watching.

Rest both as long as needed now, so we have them through the season and playoffs.

Health matters. I'm not in favor of rushing players back. The potential short-term gains should never outweigh long-term objectives.

Kdp - I'm wearing one of those right now. You can never be too careful.

Jayson Tatum is going to be one hell of a player in 2 years.

Tonight he and Larkin led the team in scoring, 16 points.

But what's amazing is Brad Stevens went to Tatum in the last 2 minutes of the game.
Tatum delivered by scoring 2 out of 3 times to keep the Celts ahead.

Paul Pierce 2.0 indeed.

Before draft night, some Celtic fans wanted Ainge to pick Josh Jackson or Jonathan Isaac at #3 because both Jackson and Isaac had a higher ceiling than Tatum.

Ainge is really a genius.
