Rebounding a Funtion of Winning
The Celtics have lost 10 games this year. In 7 of those games they were outrebounded by their opponent and one loss they were even on the glass. And in 2 of those losses they won the rebounding battle.
The Celtics have won 28 games this year and they outrebounded their opponent in 17 out of those 28 game
They have won 11 games where they were outrebounded by their opponent.
Over the last 12 games Boston is 6-6 Over that 12 game stretch they have been outrebounded 9 times with one even game. It is now 6 straight with negative rebounds.
As we all know rebounding is a defensive stat so if the team is not getting stops then they will get fewer rebounds. Rebounding is also an offensive state.
Should the Celtics look at adding a rebounder/defensive type player or should they focus on adding a scorer for the bench?

Re: Rebounding a Funtion of Winning
Sure you don't mean "winning is a function of rebounding"? In this phrasing rebounding is the independent variable and winning the dependent, i.e. winning depends on rebounding.

dboss,
Your stat work in the Cs rebounding is probably very much similar to just about any winning team from midget ball on up.
Rebounding is just THAT important to winning basketball games.

Re: Rebounding a Funtion of Winning
All phases of the STAT LINE play a role in the outcome of a game - some more than others. But far and away the most influential is field goal accuracy (EFG). The EFG average league ranking for the two teams in the finals over the past 10 years was 3.9 offensively while ranking 7.4 defensively. Other stat league rankings for the 2 finalist were as follows. Rebound percentages,,,13.6, Ast,13.1, Pace,13.8, Fast break,14.2 - all but the efg stat just a little better than a average of 15 based on 30 teams.
Note- Above based on last 10 years - except the rebounding numbers which were only available for the last 6 years.
