Here is one aspect of what options the C's may have from Daniel Leroux, the Sporting News' NBA salary cap expert:

Sand,

Thanks for posting this. Interesting. EVERY player is grist for inclusion in a bigger trade as far as Danny is concerned. He's still holding out for a 2nd rounder for his mother.

I read this article yesterday and was about to post it to the forum.  I found it to be convoluted.  The premise of the article suggests that Boston needs to add a few more players like Hood and Randle to increase their payroll so that they can use those contracts down the road to land a bigger fish.  He mentions Anthony Davis.  He also talks about resigning Smart and then use him to go after another major piece.  he also suggests ways the DPE could be used in a trade.  He figures that Danny would have to part with a Pick to get Randle or Boston would need to trade someone to LAL.

The author believes that we have to have a player on the team that won an MVP in order to win a championship.  That player may already be on our team.

It is a real messy article. What the author fails to understand is that Boston is not likely to live with 4 max contract players.  They will not be able to do that and still pay Brown or Tatum down the road.  Too many teams have too many bad contracts on the books and it is the main reason why they are not able to make significant changes without squandering future picks.  They cannot add young cheap prospects without draft picks.

Danny Ainge knows exactly what he is doing.

dboss,

Yes, he's throwing darts at variable scenarios that may or may not be feasible. I don't see AD coming to the C's nor do I agree with his MVP qualifier. Kyrie is in that elite group already, whether he gets the MVP or not.

Nevertheless, not being a salary cap maven, I found the article interesting and informative on how it can be used - e.g., "What makes the Celtics unique is not what they have, but rather what they lack: filler salary." I hadn't thought about how filler salary or the lack thereof could affect their trade possibilities. I keep learning something new each day.

There is some truth to the need to have enough salary to trade.

The Celtics are missing the in between salaries like Amir Johnson's to help make bigger trades. One realizes that when playing around with the trade machine.

One reason I think Smart is coming back if he isn't traded is he will have plenty of time to win everyone's long-term confidence. He could improve. Then how do you let a decent #6 pick walk for nothing? So I'm thinking Smart could be traded any day now. It seems very likely, imho. It's tough to think he has more value than Rozier after the last game considering Terry is signed for next year at low cost.
