Celtics Wrap: C’s Fall To Wizards 125-124 In Double Overtime Thriller
NESN by Logan Mullen on Wed, Mar 14, 2018 at 11:12PM
BOSTON — What would have been a resilient win for the Boston Celtics instead turned into a heartbreaking loss. With injuries to a slew of key players, the C’s blew a 20-point lead and fell in double overtime to the Washington Wizards 125-124. Marcus Morris paced the Celtics with 31 points as six C’s scored in double figures. Bradley Beal dropped 34 points and was one of five Wizards in double figures. The Celtics fall to 46-22 with the loss, while the Wizards climb to 39-30. Here’s how it all went down:
STARTING FIVE G: Terry Rozier F: Guerschon Yabusele F: Jayson Tatum F: Marcus Morris C: Aron Baynes
RUNNING ON FUMES The Celtics were down quite a few men Wednesday due to various injuries. Jaylen Brown (concussion), Al Horford (injury), Kyrie Irving (left knee soreness), and Marcus Smart (right thumb sprain) — in addition to Daniel Theis (left meniscal tear) and Gordon Hayward (left ankle) — all were inactive.
EARLY DOMINANCE Despite the unusual starting lineup, the Celtics didn’t struggle to find scoring early on, as they led 37-23 through one quarter. The Celts piled things on early, beginning with a 9-0 run within the first three minutes of the game to build a quick seven-point advantage. The Wizards pulled within seven later in the period, but the C’s scored six of the quarter’s final eight points. Morris had 10 points in the first.
C’S STUMBLE INTO HALF Boston quickly opened its lead to 20 in the second quarter, but that advantage shrunk to seven as they entered the half up 59-52. The Wizards outscored the Celtics 29-22 in the quarter. Washington cut the lead to 14 with 3:24 to play after putting together a 7-1 run over 1:10, and though the Celtics built the lead back up to 17, the Wizards finished the final 2:24 of the half on a 10-0 run. Morris lead the C’s with 11 points, while Jayson Tatum added 10 of his own. Morris’ brother Markieff led the Wizards with 11 first-half points.
LEAD LOST After the Celtics mostly dominated the first half, the third quarter was a constant back-and-forth between the two sides, with the Wizards claiming the lead and finishing the quarter up 81-80. At 3:35 Washington grabbed a 77-76 lead after an 8-0 run over a minute, their first lead since the opening basket. They built the lead up to three, but it was cut back to one to end the half. Washington’s comeback was due in large part to Beal heating up. After scoring just five points in the first half, the guard dropped 16 points in the third alone.
MEEKS’ HEROICS FORCE OVERTIME Like the previous frame, the ensuing minutes were spent with the two teams trading one chance after another. Rarely did a scoring possession from one team go unanswered by the other. With 44 seconds left, Morris hit a huge 3-pointer to put Boston up 103-99. Beal pulled the Wizards back within two on a layup, but Tatum hit one of his two free throws the next trip down to go back up by a trio. Beal, however, answered with another layup. Up 104-103 with 13 seconds to play, Shane Larkin hit both his free throws to put Boston up by three. The next possession, Beal’s 3-point attempt with five seconds left rimmed out, but the Celtics tipped the ball out and the Wizards had another chance. On the second opportunity Jodie Meeks took the shot and knocked it down, forcing overtime.
ONE OT NOT ENOUGH The Wizards led 115-113 with just under 20 seconds to play in overtime, and with a chance to tie, the Celtics proceeded to turn the ball over. After fouling and forcing an inbound, Boston caused a turnover and got the ball back underneath their own basket with 8.8 seconds left. Rozier got the ball from Morris on the inbound, and the guard hit Tatum at the top of the key. Tatum drove the lane, scored the tying layup while also drawing the and-one foul. Tied at 115, the rookie missed what would have been the game-winning free throw.
WIZARDS PREVAIL IN SECOND OT Washington gave itself a five-point cushion within the first half of the second overtime, but Rozier had an answer with 46 seconds to play. Down by four, the guard knocked down a big 3-pointer to pull the Celtics within one. But that was all they could do, as Tatum missed what would have been a game-winning 3-pointer as time expired.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT Tatum just can’t stop dunking.
UP NEXT The Celtics will hit the road and take on the Orlando Magic on Friday. Tip from Amway Center is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.

Re: POST GAME WASHINGTON - HOME
I hate losing but I can live with this one. It has been said that the Houston loss was "the best loss of the season" because we hung in there against the best team in the league, on their home court, and it was a grudge game for them. This one comes close, if not beats it. We had no right being in this from the beginning, we are SO depleted. We started 2 rookies, one of whom had only played a grand total 100 minutes before last night. In the end, we had not one but two chances to win this. That's because everybody stepped up. Some stepped up more than others, others less so, but overall a very PRIDEFUL performance by our gritty gang in green. Brad once said that players far down on the bench aren't on the team now because of what they could become years from now, they are on the team now because of what they can do for the team this year. Last night, we saw what he was talking about.
Rozier 8-21 (38%). 9 assists and 2 TOs was very nice floor generalship. He ended up with 21 because he shot 4-9 from 3. It just drives me crazy when I see players taking that many fgas and shooting that inefficiently. I suppose that last night we needed people to take shots anyway because our primary shooter was out. He had 3 blocks too.
Tatum with 19 points but on 9-23 (39%). 6 assists and 2 TOs are nice but he made some poor decisions too. He got a couple of shot blocked because he wasn't thinking, one time because of that bad habit of his of pinning the ball against his chest before he goes up with it. He missed a frito, BADLY, that would have won the game for us. in OT. He's a rookie and this is part of the learning curve for a rook. Hopefully, presumably, he's going to learn from this and will become the truly icy assassin many of us think he's going to be.
Mook Morris was Kyrie Irving last night. 31 points on a very efficient 11-22. He also made some really, really poor defensive decisions. We were up 3 with time almost gone in regulation. They needed a 3. Not a 2, a 3, and they took the ball out. Morris left his man in the corner while he hung out near the paint. Beal drove the lane, Morris took a half-step towards him, and then was too late to get to his man, Meeks, in the corner who buried the 3 and put us into OT. We had the game won and one of our few veterans who could play blew it, and he knows it.

Full quote from Mook on Kieff: "One thing we did say was that when we were in Washington, he fouled Kyrie at the end to send it into overtime. This time, I did a bonehead play and came in and they hit a 3 for overtime. So twins do dumb shit, I guess."
And this is why Mook Morris is a starting forward on poor teams but comes off the bench on good ones. He's a scorer, a fair but not real good defender, but he isn't a smart player.
Everybody else I have nice things to say about. Nader on the three from the top with <2 seconds left on the shot clock (Brad's ATO, btw, was pure genius). A solid game by Nader. The Moose was Loose with 16 on 8-9 and 10 rebounds. Larkin a frenetic blur on offense and defense, shooting the passing lane for a full court steal and layup. Semi battling bigger men down low. That's it, that's our entire bench last night. 4 guys. They shot a combined 17-26 (65%) and grabbed 17 rebounds in 100 player minutes. Our starters were 31-73 (42%) and grabbed 27 rebounds in 189 player minutes. On a /minute basis our bench shot more and rebounded better than our starters.
Yabusele with a creditable debut. He was active on defense and had 5 assists and 1 TO in just 18 minutes of play. He was hesitant to take shots, he was 1-2, 2-2 from the line but he did just about everything else well. By comparison Jayson Tatum, a far more experienced and talented player, had 6 assists in 46 minutes and Larkin had 4 assists in 24 minutes. So Yabby's 5 in 18 is a real eye-opener. Was this a fluke?

Brad on Yabu: "He was good. I thought he was solid, didn’t try to do too much and was pretty active, moved the ball around nice, which is what his strength is I think. He did a pretty good job guarding Markieff when he was matched up with him, which is a hard matchup."

Our rebounding started going to shit after the 1st quarter. We were up 17-6 after 1. They won the rebounding battle 52-44.

Re: POST GAME WASHINGTON - HOME
This was quite a game!
Despite all the hang wringing and the prognosticators pronouncements of the C's being too shorthanded to have a chance they built a 20 point lead in the first half. They did it by playing TEAM basketball with great first halfs by Mercurial Morris and Jason Tatum.
There was definitely a point where I would have gladly handed the game ball to Morris but say that Shane Larkin was the difference maker.
There was so much going on, so many long and then very long reviews. (In defense of the refs, this game had a few very complicated calls where the real difference in getting the call right or wrong was the replay.) But this game wasn't lost because of the refs.
The standout problem last night was the handle of Jason Tatum. His instinct is spot on but his execution still leaves a little to be desired. He tries to force himself and the ball through two or more players and it just doesn't work. Kyrie can do things like that. Both Rozier and Smart can sometimes but not all the time. Both J's have work to do in this area.
But let's keep this real. The Celtics lost last night because we are missing 4 starters, our 6th man, and Mr. We Like. The play in the first quarter was inspired and shows just how deep this team is. The play in the second and third quarters was characterized by "settle for the jump shotitis". Things came back together more in the 4thk but those last few minutes were amazing.
Both sides had played their best for too many minutes and players on both sides were huffin and puffin from the exertion.
Monroe can play better and he only missed one shot.
" We went to the Charming Faire. The Lions and Tigers were there. But that's not why we left our Lair, We came for the Dancing Bear."
I've waited a long time to see Bear start a game. (Or even just play in one) It was easy to see why the Celtics used a pick on him. His special skill set was on display even though he didnt produce a lot in his first NBA start. He only had 4 points and 3 rebounds but he produced 5 assists in 18 minutes of play. His usage reminded me of the way Brad would play Amir. It was a good strategy to hide his inexperience and still give him a chance to contribute. I will be looking for a better game from him on Friday.
A double overtime loss to a playoff team and conference rival is hard to take but given the circumstances, I'll take it. Any one of the missing players playing and the C's win this game.

Bob,
I cannot accept this loss. Poor execution especially among veterans. Again no ball movement in overtime to space the court so you can get cuts to the basket. No, they settled on hero ball or just throwing up 3 pt shots.
While I am at it. Monroe should have had more minutes in the 3rd period when they lost their lead.
Stevens has no answer to stopping big runs - time in and time out - especially trying to shut down a hot player.
Not impressed by Stevens Ball!

Re: POST GAME WASHINGTON - HOME
I know he made a couple of really lousy plays, but without Morris we would not have been in the game at all. He was the most consistent shooter on the floor. The one game I expected Rozier to come in and take over, he disappointed me. I know he had a decent point total at the end, but there were many plays he just let the ball get away from him, going too fast for his own legs!
Tatum is Tatum, still just a rookie thrown into games and trying as hard as he could to make the big plays and some of them were, but missing those free throws hurt. We just have to remember he is still just a kid, just like we did with Brown last year.
All in all, they fought hard, played well and came up one point short. I thought Nader, Yabasele, and Larkin were excellent.
So I will put this loss in the back of my head and hope that they learned something big from this loss. On to Orlando and let's win there

I was really wondering where were the Cs two split contract guys last night. Not sure that either guy could have made a positive difference, but if they were still playing for Maine they certainly should have been in Boston, in my opinion - one point could have won this game in regulation time.

Re: POST GAME WASHINGTON - HOME
We had enough heart, hustle, and skill to win this game - a few mental lapses lost it for us. All in all, one helluva game to watch. Fun basketball, although excruciating to watch them lose that way. Still I am proud of the young'uns.
Re: POST GAME WASHINGTON - HOME
Brad went with what he trusted. I am sure if there were some guys in foul trouble he may have gone to one. Allen was on the bench and he used Yabaele, who did a credible job when he was in there. He played with hustle and no fear. There are going to be times when Allen and, Bird, if he is called from Maine, will get a few minutes.
Morris played a ton of minutes last night and the only reason Larkin was not in at the end of the game was a minutes restriction still keeping him from playing as much as he wants.
Worcester, you are right. I was darn proud of this team that was on the floor. They worked their hearts out. My only issue is why Morris was not in for offense a little more. But he set a great pick for Tatum to hit that shot
