Joel Embiid will be out indefinitely with orbital fracture and concussion.

After suffering an injury at the 11:50 mark of 2nd quarter of last night’s game against New York, Joel Embiid was initially evaluated in the locker room and later taken to Jefferson Hospital for further evaluation and testing. Immediately following the injury, Embiid was assessed for a concussion, was asymptomatic at that time, and passed the NBA’s locker room concussion assessment tool. However, he later began experiencing symptoms, has since been diagnosed with a concussion, and has been placed in the NBA’s concussion protocol. Embiid also underwent a CT scan, which revealed an orbital fracture of his left eye. Surgery will be performed in the coming days to address the orbital fracture, and further updates will be provided as appropriate.

This guy has the worst luck. He's probably done for the season, what's left of it.

This means that Philly won't move ahead of Cleveland for the third seed.

Have to feel sorry for Embiid. Like gyso said, he's had the worst luck.

He'll probably be the top center in the league within another season or so, if he isn't already, but he's getting there the hard way.

Catching Cleveland for the #3 spot might be the lesser of their problems.  They are only 1/2 game ahead of Indiana for the #5 spot.  They could lose home court in the first round and, if there is an upset, possibly 2nd round too.

4 plays 5.  If the playoffs started today Philly would host Indy.  Philly is 26-11 @ home, but 18-19 on the road.   Having home court is a big deal to them, especially since they are so young.

There have been other NBA players with this injury. They wore masks and played. Joe Johnson, for one, comes to mind. He had an orbital fracture too. I'm expecting Embiid to be out for a week, at most. How a mask might affect his play is to be determined.

Kyrie had a "minor facial fracture". I cannot find any more specific description. That means it could have been an ocular fracture or a nose or who knows? (you're the medical professional, not me) He got hit on a Friday, missed the Sunday game but was back soon after that and wore it for 2 weeks.

Rip Hamilton wore a mask because his nose got broken. That is the typical reason why they wear them.

Kareem wore goggles, to protect his eyes, not his face including cheeks bones. In fact, looking at those goggles, I would say a direct hit on those goggles should have driven the rims into his face but protecting his eyes. Of course, being 7'2", it was tough to make a direct hit on those goggles unless you're 8'4".
