Something's not right
Hi,
Just read this.
Well, I'm not sure I agree but opinions differ. But "... Boston’s Brad Stevens, whose team is on the verge of the conference finals as a No. 2 seed in the East after losing one All-Star five minutes into the season and another with a month to go before the playoffs, didn’t receive a single vote ..." left me speechless. How is that possible?

Casey just happened to be Carlisle’s Assistant before he got the Raptors gig. Wink wink.

Re: Something's not right
This isn't the "real" NBA Coach of the Year award. This is a different one, the Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year Award. NBCA = National Basketball Coaches Association.
The NBA Coaches Association (NBCA) is the association that represents basketball coaches in the National Basketball Association. Founded in 1976, the NBCA consists of all NBA Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches and alumni, and works closely with the NBA on all matters that pertain to the coaching profession.
http://nbacoaches.com/
It said, "The Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year Award for the top NBA Coach as voted by his peers . . ."
It said, "But this award — selected by the league’s 30 head coaches . . ."
Then it said, "Seven other coaches received votes from the NBCA: D’Antoni, Philadelphia’s Brett Brown, Indiana’s Nate McMillan, San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich, the Los Angeles Clippers’ Doc Rivers, Utah’s Quin Snyder and Portland’s Terry Stotts".
Is the vote made by just the 30 current coaches or by the NBCA in general (current coaches, assistant coaches and alumni)?
No single vote for Brad? Wow . . . just wow!

Re: Something's not right
Maybe they're jealous of Brad's youth.
Maybe they considered how many of these he's likely to win in the future and sandbagged him.
The one person who doesn't give a rat's behind is probably Stevens.
He's got bigger targets, for sure.

Re: Something's not right
It's easy to get caught up in end of season awards. But that's never been the Celtics way. I know that's true because I'm as guilty as the next guy. I think Jayson is the best rookie in the NBA but he isn't going to win. I think Brad has done an excellent job given all the adversity. But he didn't even get a vote? Danny probably won't garner support as EOY but he deserves it. It doesn't really matter because it's not the Celtics way. There is only one acknowledgement that the Boston Celtics want at the end of the year. It's not the MVP or ROY or COY or EOY. It's not the Division Banner or the Conference Banner. I've never seen one with Boston's name on it even though I suspect that the Celtics have more than a few of those. No, the Celtics Way is only about one thing. Winning the last game of the year. Hanging that Banner. This season is not over and we are still playing.

Don’t mean to be picky but indeed the Celtics use to hang conference championship banners in the old garden. Took me a little searching but I found a photo showing them. Probably from the 1967 season I believe.
But I understand what you mean.

Barkley ( for once I agree with him, at least to an extent ) said it was pettiness and jealousy. Interestingly, there are rumblings that Casey may get sacked.

Brett Brown? Really?
Brett Brown is from Maine. He played for South Portland High School and went on to play for Boston University.
I can still hear a bit of the Mainah accent when he talks. So lay off of him, please.
LOL - JK, just trying to protect a fellow Mainiac!

My family lives in Portland, so I am all for Mainers, but to vote for Brown over Brad? C'mon, man!
Re: Something's not right
I don't have a problem with Dwane Casey winning COY, but I can't help but wonder how many of those coaches who did not vote for Brad did not even make the playoffs with a full, healthy roster.

I know you have ties to Maine, your son has that recycled cooking oil to diesel fuel business there. I said JK. (Just kidding)
I do agree that Brown shouldn't have gotten votes over Brad. The fact that Brad didn't get any votes kind of makes that award forever meaningless, IMO. Even if someday Brad wins it, I hope people remember what happened this year.

Re: Something's not right
You guys need to clean those green goggles. Here's one of those all important stats for ya.
Last year the Celtics won 52 games and this year they won 54 games in the regular season. Fortunately I don't have shoes on so I can state with authority that the Celtics won two more games this year.
Last year Philly won 28 games and this year they won 52 games in the regular season. I think that works out to 24 more wins. That means that Brown was 22 wins better than Brad this past season.
I hope you all understand these special analytics at work here.
I did all the math without an abacus.

Re: Something's not right
mulco,
There are, however, many folks who think that the 'ers had better talent than our Celtics all season and particularly at the end of the season when Haywood, Irving and even Thies were all injured and unavailable.
I have already heard down here in DE this morning that the 'ers only lost because they were "young". I guess those old gray bearded Cs guys like Rozier, Tatum, Brown, Smart, etc (even their vets are not close to old yet) are pretty near ready to move into their nearest retirement homes?
Also, I have a strong feeling that the 'ers would not have won anywhere near 52 games if they had been missing their second best (whomever you may want to call their second best) player for the entire season and their best player for the last quarter of a season to include every playoff game so far.
If Brown (who is a good coach, by the way as I see many 'ers games on local TV) is better than Stevens he surely did not seem to display it very well either during the regular season or in the five playoff games against the Celtics.
Not a betting man here, but I do believe that the 'ers were favored in this series even after getting crushed in the first game. And, in the end they got beat in five games.
With all that typed, I really don't care if Brad Stevens wins a COY as long as the Cs are great to watch and follow, and this year they certainly have been both.

Re: Something's not right
Clyde,
When I heard that they had been favored from the beginning, and in all games, I shook my head until I realized that with Kyrie, Gordon, Marcus, and Daniel out the talent was even, which may explain the closeness of games. The Sixers are a good young team with some very good young players. Their "process" is complete and now it is time to play for real. They had a very good season and playoffs. But there is a reason it was 4-1. The C's are just that much better, that much more advanced in our process. It's going to be like that for the next ten years.
As far as those who think Philly had the better talent all year, with or without Gordon, well, some people think the capitol of Japan is Kamakura. And demand respect for their opinion. LOL
The key to this renewed rivalry for us is that we have players 1-2 years more advanced than what these great young er's have. Gordon is in his prime and Kyrie close, Al a seasoned all star veteran. Baynes and Morris have been solid vets. It starts to get close with Smart and Rozier but the heart of Philly is around the same age as Jaylen and Jayson and their guys just aren't as good. We are going to break their hearts for years just because of this difference, imo.
Yep, only one thing counts and I don't mind a guy with a solid downeast accent getting the accolades that he has earned. And Casey shouldn't be fired.
My opinion of this Celtics team hasn't changed. I expect them to make the NBA Finals and prove that they were the best team this season.
