Celtics Sign Walt Lemon Jr to Two Way Contract

Days after Kadeem Allen was released from his two-way contract, the Boston Celtics have added a replacement.

Walt Lemon, a 6-foot-3 guard who scored 17 points in 35 minutes over five games for the New Orleans Pelicans last year, agreed to a two-way deal with the Celtics according the Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania.

The Boston Celtics and guard Walt Lemon Jr. have agreed a two-way NBA contract, league sources tell Yahoo. Lemon played five games for the New Orleans Pelicans last season.

Playing for the NBA G-League's Fort Wayne Mad Ants, Lemon, a Chicago native, was fourth in the league in scoring at 22.4 points per game and 14th in assists at 6.1 per game. The former Bradley University star from Chicago averaged 13.6 points and 6.4 assists for the Pelicans' in the NBA Summer League.

If Jabari Bird receives a guaranteed contract as expected, either from the Celtics or from another team, Boston will have a second two-way slot to use.

Unless Jabari Bird is released (unlikely), signed/traded (always a possibility with Danny) or upgraded to an NBA contract (quite possible) this is not good news for Hassan Martin.

I am sure that Martin has some skills, but I do not see him being a good fit for the Celtics. A 6'7 guy who is neither a really good ball handler or shooter does not seem to fit on our roster at this time. Too small to play big and not skilled enough to play small.

Lemon could be another option at one of the guard positions with Lowry apparently gone and the possibility of Smart finding another team, but we all know that doing well in the G League rarely translates to being ready for the NBA.

Bird will not be on a 2 way deal this upcoming seasin so with Allen gone and Bird being upgraded.

It still leaves one 2-way slot so how does this diminish Martin's chances to fill that last slot?

Nobody has guaranteed that Bird will be upgraded. Ainge was non-committal as to his future as a Celtic at a Summer League interview. bobheckler spelled out the various  possible scenarios, and said if none of the ones he listed took place it  would be bad news for Martin. Pretty inarguable. Any time one of two available slots is filled , it decreases the chances of other candidates for the position. Bird may be upgraded  and Martin may get a two way contract, but neither of those things is guaranteed. Both played well in the summer league and it is entirely possible that neither one will have any connection to the Celtics next year.

Correction to earlier report: Danny Ainge says Celtics have not yet agreed to terms with free agent Walter Lemon Jr. on two-way contract. Both sides still in discussions.

Has  anybody seen this guy play? Not very impress 3 ball , or for that matter freebie stats.

Would have been bigger news if they signed Meadowlark Lemon.

Tough to do, though, since he passed in 2015.

May be a Red Claw.
