Marcus Smart fined $50,000 for shoving Joel Embiid to the ground
https://sports.yahoo.com/marcus-smart-fined-50000-for-shoving-joel-embiid-to-the-ground-224027131.html
Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart cost himself a nice chunk of change after shoving Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid during Wednesday’s game. On Thursday, the NBA fined Smart $50,000 for his actions during the contest.
In the third quarter of the 76ers 118-115 win over the Celtics, Embiid set a screen on Smart that put Smart on the ground. The 25-year-old Smart got up, and immediately shoved Embiid in the back, sending Embiid to the floor.
That sparked a shoving match that may have turned into a full-blown brawl had officials not stepped in. Once everything got sorted out, Smart was ejected from the contest. The 76ers — who were trailing at the time of the incident — rallied to win the game.
Smart’s fine is much higher than normal based on his previous actions. In 2017, he was fined $25,000 for making an obscene gesture during a game against the Chicago Bulls. In 2018, Smart was again fined $25,000 for shoving J.R. Smith.
The NBA alluded to those incidents in order to justify doubling Smart’s usual fine.
Smart’s fine was also based on his repeated acts of unsportsmanlike conduct during NBA games, including two prior incidents this season which have resulted in fines.
The Celtics and 76ers will not play each other again during the regular season. There is a chance, however, that the two teams could meet in the playoffs. The 76ers are currently the No. 3 seed in the East. The Celtics sit in the No. 5 spot.
The two teams were already going to be must-see television if they met in the NBA playoffs. After Wednesday’s shove, somehow the stakes will be even higher should Smart and Embiid take the floor as opponents again.

As much as I like Marcus Smart's contributions to the Celtics in all the years that he has been on the
team, he really aggravated me with this stupid play against the 'ers.
The Cs should also fine him $50,000 for being such a major reason for this loss.

By simply beating the 76er's and then afterward going up to him and saying to Embiid, "Your DA lost this game because you tried to take me out there in the third." would have sent Embiid psychologically back to his time at Duke and never recovered....I'm just sayin'!

This is Marcus. The passion that makes him the best on ball defender in the NBA, also boils over from time to time.
I will take the good with the bad.

Ditto, mrkleen. 99.9% good/great, .1% over abundance of passion and not taking jack off of anybody! (Although as I type that, that's about 100% for him as well!!)

we all love his "passion"
but, he is a vet now and needs to be Smarter.
if he does something that STUPID in a playoff game he WILL get a suspension and that could cost us a series.

Re: Smart Fined $50K For Embiid Shove
Did anything happen to Embid? Not for anything he was the one who started this whole thing, stood over Smart and said something, and then tried to turn his back on him. That is what what got Smart going? I thought taunting was against the rules. This guy has his mouth going constantly and is an instigator.
I am not saying Smart was right, believe me, he was not. He has to start thinking about the consequences of his actions before he pulls that stuff.
I predict that at some point, someone is just NOT going to take this crap from Embid. He thinks he is untouchable, someone is going to put him in his place. Why the league doesn't step on him someone else will. He is a talented punk.

Re: Smart Fined $50K For Embiid Shove
Smart is lucky he was not suspended but if he has another incident like this I see a fine and a suspension coming.
No one can criticize his passion, his fight and his toughness that he brings to the game. But even within that context he sometimes goes off the reservation.
He is 'out of control' at times when he does not like what is happening on the court.
He cannot help this team by getting thrown out of a game. The Celtics really needed him the other night against the Sixers and I think he let the team and himself down.
I am sorry but I cannot give him another pass. These incidents have been too frequent.
If I was running the team I would suspend him for a QTR or a half.

Re: Smart Fined $50K For Embiid Shove
Hi,
The other problem that nobody mentioned was that Embiid got a T only after refs reviewed the incident and determined, correctly, that Embiid elbowed Smart. If they whistled right then - I doubt there would be Smart outburst.
To continue on that. Every team knows how persistent Smart is and how tight he defends p-n-r. So, Embiid and others may and probably will use their elbows since it brought such a good result and refs didn't catch the foul. I hope the league and refs will learn from this incident and try to not repeat it again, especially in playoffs.

Refs have been missing plays all year long. They are going miss plays throughout the playoffs and forever more.
Smart players understand that calls will be missed but smart players are smart enough not to make a habit of doing something that gets them thrown out of the game. Smart is a hothead and everybody in the league knows it. You can bait him into losing his composure.
This is the 3rd time this year including a meaningless preseason game that Smart got thrown out of the game and fined. The league will not tolerant his behavior. He needs to grown up. He must learn to control his emotions. He's a tough aggressive dude but we need a little more controlled aggression.
We need him in the game.

I like Smart's fire, always have.
Still, he needs to be smarter (no pun intended) than this kind of move.
Better the 50 large than a suspension. At least for the team.

Nest blow up will cost him games, for sure. I just think the league is lax on punishing guys that start these things and then walk away innocently. Embid is an instigator, but smart was stupid for falling for his foolishness. Kill him on the court. Do you realize how crazy Embid would have gone if he lost that game the other night? The Celtics are living rent free in his head

Marcus Smart on ejection: 'I’ll do it over again'
https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/celtics/marcus-smart-ejection-ill-do-it-over-again
Marcus Smart was ejected in the Boston Celtics' Wednesday night loss to the Philadelphia 76ers after he angrily shoved the Sixers' star center, Joel Embiid, in the back.
On Friday, Smart addressed the incident during the team's media availability in Charlotte — and he wasn't exactly apologetic.
"I thought it was just really obvious that it was an illegal screen that should’ve been called and I thought it should’ve been cleaned up," Smart told reporters. "You know, if you called that screen or you make the right call, you just don’t let an offensive player do what he wanted. Allow the defender to protect himself and protect his space as well. None of that ever happened.
"So, with the illegal elbow, I don’t know if you guys watched this but you can even see Joel lean in with the elbow. You can see Joel walk off like he didn’t even do anything. I don’t know what the call was. So, after that, I waited for the call, it didn’t happen, and I just got up and pushed him."
The Celtics were up 11 when Smart exited the game, but they ultimately ended up losing by three points. Brad Stevens expressed his disappointment in Smart's decision after the game, specifically citing Aron Baynes' injury as part of the reason that the team really needed Smart on the floor.
Smart ended up being issued a $50,000 fine from the NBA.
Despite the end result of everything, Smart said that he wouldn't change anything about what he did.
"I’ll do it over again. I’m going to protect myself at all times, especially if I don’t feel like I’m being protected out there like everybody else is. If you don’t want to clean it up, I’ll clean it up myself."
Smart will return to the Celtics' lineup on Saturday against the Hornets. He'll help out the team, as they have already declared three rotation players out for the game in Charlotte.

I guess he has to take a stand. That was an obvious dirty screen/elbow. If the ref's won't call it and punish the aggressor, he feels that he has to do their job.
I am somewhat surprised that the league didn't fine him for that statement. Maybe they didn't because they were wearing egg on their face.

league is more likely noting what Smart said and will keep an even closer eye on him now.
the push was STUPID for Smart
and talking about it like this is just doubling down on being STUPID.
if HE wants to call games, retire and go become a ref....otherwise shut up and play clean....Smart is HURTING thimself and the team with this crap and he needs to understand that.
the refs will be watching him even closer now and he will NOT get any calls going his way. Unless Danny or Brad lets him know that this crap WILL stop, he will end up getting a suspension and probably during the playoffs. Perhaps costing us a series.
if that happens Danny should look to move him int he off-season.
Its your job to keep your head Smart, you are getting paid very well and need to grow up.

Re: Smart Fined $50K For Embiid Shove
Embid better clean up his act and League should be punishing him for cheap shots, not empowering him and letting him get away with it. He keeps on cheapshotting people, he’ll be next Rudy T with a broken face....and I know Rudy was not a cheapshot thug like Embid. Embid should have been called for initial foul/elbow on Smart.

Re: Smart Fined $50K For Embiid Shove
Sure, Smart should control himself better, but I am not so sure that his comments will have a negative impact. Somebody needed to point out the disparate treatment of "stars" versus grinders and the fact that guys need to be allowed to play defense. Embied made more disparaging remarks than Smart's about the refs after the previous meeting between the 2 teams and he still gets his hundred free throws per game.

Re: Smart Fined $50K For Embiid Shove
It's a star driven league and the refs consciously or unconsciously favor big name star players for that reason. It's marketing driven. The excuse for this that is often given by the league office is the game is too fast to call real time so the refs make anticipatory calls and the star players are faster, more aggressive, etc. This is true as well but it's pretty obvious that Star power and good old home court advantage also play a role in refs make calls. Ebiid moved his elbow and his leg on the play in question in with Marcus Smart and the refs missed a call that could have hurt Marcus (particularly the lower body). I don't mind Embiid bulling his way to the hole like Shaq, Wilt, etc. but when he sticks out his leg or elbows...uh uh.

Re: Smart Fined $50K For Embiid Shove
In the end there is actually a bottom line to this discussion.
What is in the best interest of the Boston Celtics. That is the bottom line.
The Boston Celtics are a better team with Marcus Smart because he is in fact a transcendent
Player ("beyond or above the range of normal or merely physical human experience.")
I think that any engagement discussing the cause of the recent disqualification in a very meaningful game is really irrelevant. It does not matter what Joel Embid did.
The only thing that really matters is that Marcus Smart got tossed out of a game AGAIN because he was out of control.
His lack of contrition is symptomatic.
If you disagree I respect your opinion but know this... The NBA will come down on Marcus like a ton of bricks if he continues to lose control of his emotions.
I am looking for some leadership here. Marcus is in his 5th year and qualifies for veteran status. What example are you setting for the younger guys. Do you encourage them to go knock somebody the fuck out when they do not like what happened in a game?
I personally am shocked at all the enabling I am seeing from this board.
Marcus Smart fucked up again and you'll think it's cool.
It is not cool. It is not professional. It does not help our team win.

I'm not sure why Embiid is called a "thug" when he sticks out a elbow on a screen, but Bayens is said to just be a hard and tough player when he does it?
and if you've never seen Baynes do the exact same thing you are simply not watching.
sorry, green goggles or not.
