What if This happened
Danny makes the trade for AD and then realizes after 4 months that the marriage must be annulled. He trades Davis in February and recoups some measure of the assets he lost in the poker game.

could be an option, if Davis hasn't become KG part II by then.

I am not endorsing the trade by any means but I agree kdp59. If he buys into the Celtics culture and embraces becoming the face of the franchise, a way forward with him may be found.
This does not change the depth issue which will take more than one year to address.
Waiting to hear the breaking news which is sure to come.

Re: What if This happened
I would doubt that trading Davis at the deadline would be: first, something that Ainge would do and second that such a trade would highly unlikely bring back what it will cost to trade for him this summer.
The only way that such a move could work were to be if the Cs decide that this re-build did not work well enough and then try to start another such rebuild with a goal of competing again in four or five seasons.
As it turns out that trading for Irving may have messed up this past season and possibly slowed down the rebuild although I had no problem with the trading of Thomas and Crowder for Irving when that trade was made. Perhaps there should have been a more detailed inspection of Irving's "teammate" qualities before the acquisition, but this could be a strong lesson for management going forward. Players have to "fit" in every bit as much as they have on-the-court basketball skills.
I think that sticking with the core of Tatum, Brown and Smart keeps this rebuild closer to on schedule much better than hoping Davis will sign again with Boston after he has already publicly stated that he will not sign in Boston next summer.

Creative thinking, although you can put me down as a no on trading for Davis on any terms. There is no way I can see to do it that wouldn't result in a step backwards in overall roster strength.
Keep the young core now in place and look for serviceable bigs that aren't as high priced, or draft them.

I agree that we should not do the deal. I would not expect that Boston could recoup the full value of the assets used to get AD. I am just saying if things went terribly wrong there remains one more chance to part ways before losing AD to FA.
The rebuild has been going on now for 5 years. Danny Ainge knows full well that the missing piece is a stud bigman. As I have said many times, Boston has no real chance to win without one. Boston has to either draft and develop one or trade for one.
So they can bring back the band minus Kyrie and they ain't better than the Raptors or Bucks.

Seems unnecessarily risky. Better for him to go to LA.
