MY NOTE: So, apparently, Dennis Schroder and Josh Richardson have the same birthday, September 15, 1993. They are both 28 years old today.

Re: Happy Birthday
interesting.
As is having two guys named Rudy on the same team. What happens when the coach refers to Rudy as Rudy? then a second Rudy joins the team and responds to the name Rudy
KI and GH have the same birth day and month but Kyrie was born in 92 and GH in 90.
This is yet another reason why the Celtics should look to trade Schroder.
I say it is a bad omen.

Today, 16th of September , is Grandparents day. I'm going to use this opportunity to brag on my grandson, Jonathan Cobbs, the kid pictured in my avatar. He'll be starting at guard for Solano Community college this, his freshman year. Johnny is 6'2 , can dunk off one foot or both, hit 11 threes in a game as a high school senior, and his coach says he should get a scholarship to a four year college if he improves his grades.Pardon the Interruption. Brag concluded

Re: Happy Birthday
Schroder let fans pick his number since the number he has been wearing in the NBA, #17, isn't available in green. He was afraid it was going to be '96', which is the number of his hometown rival's soccer club, Hannover 96 (his hometown team is Eintracht Braunschweig). 96 fans were trolling him by submitting #96 as the number they want him to wear, but they didn't have enough numbers to pull off that epic troll.
Schroder will be wearing #71 this year.

Schroder put this on Instagram on his birthday, poking fun at himself for turning down the 4 year/$80M contract from the Lakers.
Nice to see he has a sense of humor.

I hope Denis has an awesome season with Boston to earn a fat paycheck somewhere else.
Re: Happy Birthday
Maybe he’ll like it so much here, he’ll stay for less, Bobby Portis could have gotten easily twice as much or more….

Hey Foot,
Congrats and best of luck to your grandson.
Getting in a little news on kids and grandkids has long been a Sam's tradition, be it sports or any of life's events and occasions. I've always had a picture of my son from baseball or football as my avatar, I think since he was wearing a Celtic onesie as an infant. He's now in his senior season of HS football and plays linebacker. Our long time board member beat used to keep us up to date on his son's progress in baseball, basketball and even his early post-college career doing video in various collegiate and pro basketball leagues. Mr Kleen sometimes pops in to give us news on his young son as well. We haven't heard from him in a while, I'll have to send him a message to see if he'll stop in with some updates.
Keep us posted on how your grandson's upcoming season goes.
Regards

Re: Happy Birthday
Thanks ,guys. I saw your avatars before, and have actually tried to keep up with your son, Nycelt. That's what made me feel semi-comfortable posting about Jonnie. I don't really know anybody here personally, but I love the group dynamic. I have often thought of joining the Game On thread, but multi-tasking is not a strength of my ancient azz. I have been wondering about Swish . Missing his posts. Anybody in touch with him?

Re: Happy Birthday
Foot,
Good question on Swish. We don’t know a lot about him, although we’ve tried to find out more in the past without invading his privacy. Beyond his location and that he’s older and in declining health we don’t have much. He’s gone missing for stretches before. The last time, gyso managed to get Swish’s attention with an email. Turned out he just needed a break. I’m sure we all join you in the hope he’s doing well and will join us again soon.
I get you on GameOn. I check in periodically more out of obligation than desire. If I’m writing a response on anything but a time out I’m missing the game. Often I’m watching a recording anyway. There is an alternate feature we tried called Chatbox. Unlike GameOn it’s live, so no delay in what you write. Pete introduced it a couple of seasons back. Although it still means taking your eyes off the action, the responses are immediate. We couldn’t figure out why it didn’t quickly replace GameOn. It’s still there, down in the lower left corner of the desktop version of the forum, but hasn’t been used in some time. Perhaps we’ll give it a good push again at some point.
Regards

Yeah, a conversation with Swish was my intro to the group. He was arguing with somebody about Tiny vs. Cooz. I said to myself, " stubborn , opionated, old, sounds like my kinda guy. I think I'll get in on this. '" Hope he is well.

I remember that debate, funny all the opinions we take so seriously. Swish very much favored the modern era and called out the old 50-60’s Celts as inferior. And Sam would make compelling arguments backing up the Russell era. I always backed up the 84-86 C’s as the best lol, but my favorites were the mid 70’s C’s.
Unfortunately Tiny never had his best years here, but was instrumental in our championship year in 81 and him going down in 82 playoffs was a big reason we didn’t repeat. Swish truly believed Tiny was better in many ways than the Cooz, and he has his legit points. I’m hoping he actually reads this and knows we all enjoyed his opinions and the logic he used to express his points. Injuries are such a big part of the game, Hondo in 73, Tiny in 82, Perk in 10, we easily could have had 3 more championships.

Wow, Cowens, your detailed recollection is flawless. I am impressed. You've refreshed my recollection I must have just become a member, because I threw in the opinion that they were using different standards, so they could both be right. One of my rare attempts at diplomacy

Those were fun debates, swish would use the modern players weight and size alot in his argument and Sam would argue the depth of the 60’s Celtics and that they could play any style and wear out the opposition. That their pace was so much faster, that the so called superior modern athletes actually played at a much slower pace. My argument was the 80’s also had as many great skilled athletes or more than the modern guys today and the 86 Celtics had no weakness and had no problem handling the best athletes of their era and would school the modern guys of today. It would go on and on and on…..Dr J, Jordan, Pippen, Clyde the Glide, Dominique, Worthy, Barkley, K Malone all freak athletes that could out play/dominate many of the athletes of today. And Larry and Magic schooled all those guys….

Yeah, those were fun discussions.Ultimately, I think judging players by how dominant they are in their own era is the best we can do. Hope we hear from swish on this and other subjects soon.

Re: Happy Birthday
Not a fan of comparing eras. Jordan averaged 30.1ppg and Jerry West averaged 27ppg. West had no 3pter available, he had to get fouled, finish through contact and then earn it at the stripe. MJ didn't take a lot of 3s but he hit .5 3s/game for his career. That's 1 1/2 points added onto his scoring average per game that West didn't have access to. If West took the exact same shot he'd only have received credit for 1 point. Furthermore, hand checking was the rule with West, the league office almost completey eliminated hand checking specifically so that MJ could score more. Imagine Jerry West without KC Jones riding him. Imagine MJ if Gary Payton and Sidney Moncrief had been allowed to put both their hands on MJ.
Pete Maravich averaged 24ppg and there was NO 3pt shot until his last year in the league. He averaged 66.7% from 3 that year, 75% from 3 when he was in Celtic green. He didn't take many, he was playing with Bird and all, but he was deadly accurate because he was a phenomenal shooter. MJ took a total of 1778 3s in his career. Imagine if The Pistol had an entire career of taking 3s. He had complete green lights to shoot when he was in Atlanta and in New Orleans. He'd be the greatest scorer in NBA history if he had no handchecking like MJ had and had a 3pt arc to shoot from for his entire career.
I'm not saying West or Maravich were better players than MJ, I'm saying that because the rules they each played under it is an unfair comparison. You play against your actual competition on the court with you and not against some time-traveling science fiction league players.
