Re: Report: New timeline for Robert Williams after PRP injection in knee
Something went wrong with Williams' surgery. Surgery for a meniscus tear should not result in missing this much time (referring to last year and this). Its a fairly straightforward surgery: you either repair the meniscus (which is less common because only the 15% of a meniscus periphery has a blood supply and you need a blood supply to heal) or you remove all or part of it. I had it done years ago and it kept me from running for 7 months but after that I was fine. I know that every case is different, but we are not being told the whole story.

I read that he came back too soon after the first surgery, and the most recent surgery was to clean up some scar tissue. After the season ended, he went into total shut-down mode and was able to rest the knee. The pain receded with the rest, but returned as he was ramping up just before pre-season.
Yeah, the timing sucked for this season. Maybe he would have been ready to go during training camp this year if he didn't come back and play during our playoff run last season. Would that have been a fair trade? Not in my opinion.
The cost of him playing in the playoffs last season turned out to be his unavailability for the beginning of this one.
With that said, we really may not know the true story.

I said this before, he should be applauded for trying so hard to come back and play and contribute in the playoffs ala Kevin McHale. McHale had a different injury and was already 30 I believe, unfortunately he was still good afterwards, but really never the same. The GM and staff have to protect the players from themselves too. Larry Bird said if it was up to him, he wouldn’t let McHale play. No easy answers here, hopefully we dodged a bullet; read that while being interviewed the Timelord could not stop smiling. If Timelord is healthy, the way we are playing; with all this depth and still young ascending players, this team can be historically great. I am the master of the semi colon.

New: Mazzulla says Rob Williams has progressed to 3-on-3 work. “We started the season building our system on both ends with the full team in mind. So it’ll be a seamless transition because everything we’re doing he has the ability to fit right in & help.”
Bob
MY NOTE: 3-on-3 skeleton work is not the same as 3-on-3 contact, and this doesn't tell us which he's graduated to. Either way it means that the training staff doesn't have a problem with him moving and cutting freely and that's very good because it infers confidence in his knee's ability to instinctively push off in any direction. We have the best record in the NBA, and this part of the schedule was considered tough even when we thought RWill was healthy. Who would have expected, 4 weeks ago, we'd be sitting here saying "slow down, what's your rush? We don't needya right away 'cause we're really good without ya"?
A bonus of RWill being out, which we did not consider a bonus 4 weeks ago, is that Luke got minutes and has developed into an acceptable back up center, certainly a more than passable 3rd string center which is what he'll be when RWill comes back. You all know how scared I was of Luke getting serious minutes. He has pleasantly surprised me most of the time (not that the bar could have gotten any lower) and has, through his play, shown that we have much better depth at 5 than I thought possible. Brad might actually be good at this.

Yes Bob, I think a lot of us are surprised at Luke's play. I thought he was hopeless, but if he can maintain this level of play he's a useful player. There really is no need to rush Rwill back. We are playing tremendous ball right now, make sure he's 100% ready to go.

Robert Williams expected to play for Celtics by Christmas following knee surgery (report)

BOSTON — The Celtics could be getting a big present in time for the holidays this year as Robert Williams III looked poised to get back on the floor before the end of 2022.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com reported Wednesday night that Williams’ agent Kevin Bradbury believes that the athletic center will be back by Christmas for the Celtics after undergoing knee surgery in September.
“That gives him another month here, he’s progressing well on his rehab,” Wojnarowski said of ESPN’s NBA Countdown. “This is a player who had two surgeries in the last calendar year. They certainly want to take their time, even without him, the Celtics have the best record in the NBA.”
The Celtics announced Williams underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure back before training camp and projected his timetable to be 8-12 weeks before returning to basketball activities. He’s been back on the floor in recent weeks though and began traveling with the team early in November as his recovery progresses. Now, Williams is taking part in 3-on-3 sessions with Celtics personnel as the team begins to ramp up his recovery.
The Celtics have begun the year with a 13-4 record without their starting center but Williams’ teammates are eager to see the fifth-year center back on the floor after he was hobbled by knee issues since last March. Al Horford is averaging 31.6 minutes per game without Williams available, his highest total since 2018. Luke Kornet, Blake Griffin and Noah Vonleh have all seen minutes at backup center with Williams sidelined.
“We’ll be that much better of a team,” Tatum said earlier this month. “That’s how important Rob is to our group. I can’t stress enough how important he is to the offensive end, defensive end, his presence, lob threat, protecting the rim and his ability to pass the ball. Obviously, we miss him but we don’t want to rush him back because we want to win when it matters most.”
Boston’s defense has struggled at times this year without their best rim defender as well, ranking 20th in the NBA entering Wednesday’s matchup against the Mavericks.
“Rob is a big part of that and not having him there presents some challenges that we got to figure out on a nightly basis,” Tatum said of the Celtics defense.
