Celtics Wrap: Jaylen Brown Outduels CJ McCollum In Win Over Pelicans
Jaylen Brown was superb

NESN by Keagan Stiefel

The Boston Celtics improved their winning streak to four games Wednesday night, securing a 125-106 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans at TD Garden.

The Celtics improved their NBA-best record to 30-12 while the Pelicans dropped to 25-17.

ONE BIG TAKEAWAY
The Pelicans needed a boost with superstar forward Zion Williamson out of the lineup Wednesday night.

CJ McCollum provided it, connecting on 15-of-24 shots from the floor to lead a dangerously undermanned New Orleans squad in scoring.

The Celtics didn?t need such a boost, as their star Jayson Tatum was his usual self. They just happened to get one anyway.

Jaylen Brown was at his best against New Orleans, supplying the Celtics with one of his strongest performances of the season. The 26-year-old asserted himself physically in this one, scoring 41 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead the Celtics in both categories.

STARS OF THE GAME
— Brown played a nearly perfect game against the Pelicans. He finished with four offensive rebounds and a block to go along with his 41 points.

— Tatum finished with 31 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and a steal.

— McCollum was superb for New Orleans, scoring 38 points on 6-for-12 shooting from three. He also had four rebounds, four assists and a steal.

WAGER WATCH
Brown easily surpassed the 38.5 total point, rebound and assist number set by DraftKings Sportsbook pregame. With -110 odds of eclipsing that number, Williams helped turn $100 wagers into a net total of $190.91.

UP NEXT
The Celtics will host the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night in a battle between the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 and 2 seeds. Tipoff from TD Garden is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Nice game, but against a significantly undermanned Pel team.  A win is a win is a win.

Jaylen with 41, and on 15-21 shooting no less.  12 boards.  How he wouldn't make the All-Star game I have no idea.  It was one thing when Kemba was on the team, he was a perennial lock for the ASG and Tatum made two and it's hard to justify 3 All-Stars from one team.  Now, though, there are only 2 AND we have the #1 team in the league.  If you cannot get two All-Stars from the Celtics when they're #1 but they took 2 All-Stars when we weren't that would make zero sense.  Throw in that he's averaging almost 27ppg and it should be a lock.  One more point on Jaylen and this game:  he was hitting some unstoppable mid-range fadeaways that were positively Kobe/MJ like.  He could average 40 every game if he hits those, and I think he can.  My eyeballs are telling me he's more consistent with that shot than Jayson is with his wrong-legged Dirk fadeaway and it is every single bit as unstoppable.  He was also playing some bully ball.

John Karalis @John_Karalis
Asked Al Horford about Jaylen driving and he kinda got a smirk on his face talking about it. Why? He's thinking about the strength of Brown's drives. "When he drives I feel like people feel it. You know, when he's hitting you and he's driving. That's real."

In his post-game interview with Abby Jaylen said that he tweaked his groin in the 3rd and will have it looked at after the game.  He wouldn't commit to being available for tomorrow's game.

I love that Jaylen got 41 and only took 6 3pt fgas but had 9 ftas.  Perfect.  9 ftas/game is an All-Star player's stat.

OG with 4-6 from 3 to power us.  Put him up against a center who doesn't like to leave the paint, like Valanciunas, and he'll have open shots all game.  Al is shooting 42.6% from 3 this year and I don't think that number includes today's 4-6.  Al is 11th in the league in 3pt fg% not including today.

Malcolm is 4th in the league in 3pt fg% @ 44%.  He went 2-5, 40%, today.  Think about that:  Brogdon shot 40% from 3 today and that diluted his season's average.  What an offseason pick up by Brad!!  20 points on 7-11 today.  He is definitely out of his slump.

This game win was bigger than the score indicated as we gave them points at the very end when we had a 20 point lead. Nice to not have it get tight in the 4th as we cruised to victory in 4th. Before that was very competitive, with both teams making runs and they were hanging around with their no names playing very well. That team has a lot of good young supporting talent, if their stars could remain healthy; that team could make a deep playoff run, provided they also found the right chemistry.

We had really good chemistry tonight, and we had good pace. Brogdon pushes the pace more than Smart. The defense was there, Jaylen is so strong making people bounce off him on drives. He is reminding me of Lebron the way he is bullying thru contact on his way to the basket. When Jaylen gets it going like this, he can score on anybody and even multiple defenders. Jaylen, Brogdon and Al carrying us for stretches, but their young guys played hard and with CJ kept them in the game. Tatum got hot in 4th, White was also very heady and steady, helping us put it away. A very strong well executed game without 2 mainstay’s in Timelord and Smart. I’ll take it.

Kornet had some nice moments. I admire his ability to sit a game or two , then come in cold and contribute.

Wasn't this the same line up that beat the crap out of us a couple weeks ago? Or was Ingram in that line up? I know Zion was out. Anyway, sorry, can't sympathize nor empathize with the injured for another team. Is what it is. Everybody has to deal with it. No excuses. We've had 3/5th of our starting line up missing at times and we find a way to win.

Good, random play with ball movement. And again, it looked like more 3-balls going for us in than did. More timely ones made I guess. Some of Tatum's makes are started to leave the proverbial jaw open long enough to gather/let out flies. Those where he's driving so hard to the basket where if anyone else misses, the ball would clank out to half-court like a badly missed 3-ball, his come off the backboard and roll on the rim ever so gently and fall in, sometimes with an And 1. Beautiful to watch. Like a magician.

I too love Brogden's quiet 20-point games. He's got his head screwed on straight. Our bench crushed their bench.

I wish tonight's game is at home as stated above, but it's in BKN. It doesn't matter. I hope the Celtics put the Durant playoff defense on Kyrie and make him look like he just took up basketball over the weekend. I don't want to see him dance around for one shot tonight. Marcus should be back tonight. RWIII as well. Horford is expected to be out, although he should be at least making appearances in these B2B's just to keep the pipes clean. This is his job. I understand everything. Playing 10-15 minutes ain't going to kill him or injury him. Enough with the load management.

I'm going to say BOS (-2.5). Vegas has BOS (-3.0) now that I looked. I hope we rip them a new one and Kyrie hangs up his shoes in total, unmitigated frustration.

I disagree, we should use load management to keep the players fresh for deep playoff run where we will need every body. Let Kornet get more experience and we should have RWill back, we’ll be fine.

It was a nice win last night. New Orleans was undermanned, but we were also missing our two best defenders in Smart and Rob. Malcolm Brogdon is such a good player, when he's on he does so many good things. I will admit Kornet played the best game I have seen from him in a while. However, please keep it in perspective. Alvarado (who is maybe 6 foot) basically took him down low scored and got fouled on one play and then went by him like he was standing still on another play. I know Alvarado is quick, but Kornet is basically a turnstile when he has to guard past the foul line. I still maintain it is hard to trust Kornet with meaningful minutes.

Perhaps as a former journalist I'm too much a stickler about reporting the facts, but is it an unreasonable demand to have the score properly reported? We won 125-114, not 125-106. I think the NESN reporter filed the story before the game ended. Weak.

This was a very solid win against a very good team that plays well even without Zion.  If him and Ingram can get healthy by playoff time the Pels can make some noise out West.  They do a lot of things very well.

The final score of the game was not indicative of how well the Celtics played.  Garbage time is called garbage time for a reason.

Jaylen Brown was off the chain!   For those concerned about the allstar voting he will make the allstar team.

He is currently averaging 27.2 PPG which is 2nd among all SG's in the NBA.  Only Donovan Mitchell has a higher PPG average (29.3)  Jaylen also has the best FG% at 49.8% among the top 36 scoring shooting guards and he is #1 in rebounds among the top 19 SG' that are also top scorers.

The interesting thing about Jaylen is that his 3 point shooting has not been good (32.9%) however his midrange game and at the rim scoring has been unstoppable.  He is an absolute stud.

He is on track to make one of the all NBA teams

JT also got it done when it mattered.  He recorded his 13th straight game of scoring 25 points or more.

Other strong performances came from Brogdon (20 points), Al Horford with (14) and Grant with (9) although he did not shoot the deep ball well as he found ways to score.

Kornet gave us some solid rotation minutes and if not for the dumb ass offensive rebound and kick out, I would not have any negative to say.

It is off to Brooklyn!

They do it all the time. They have us playing at home tonight too. I wish I could say its the same writer every time but its not.
NESN must stand for some concealed virus running amuck throughout the building and it appears to be highly contagious. No excuse for such journalistic ineptness.
