Jaylen Brown’s selection to his first All-NBA second team gave the Celtics some positive news about their ability to retain one of their top All-Stars. However, that was far from the only implication of Wednesday’s announcement on the long-term future of Boston’s core.
Jayson Tatum was also named to the All-NBA first team, earning the second most votes among all players behind Giannis Antetokounmpo. Joining him on the first team were Joel Embiid, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic. Jaylen Brown was named to the All-NBA second team along with Jimmy Butler, Nikola Jokic, Stephen Curry and Donovan Mitchell.
It was the second straight All-NBA selection for Tatum and that has very big implications for contract possibilities for the 25-year-old forward. Tatum currently has three years left on his current max deal including a player option he is certain to opt out of in 2025-26.
The fact that Tatum has now made two All-NBA teams on his current deal now makes him eligible for a supermax extension. Boston can not offer him a supermax extnesion until the summer of 2024 but at that point, they will be able to offer him a five-year deal worth up to $318 million. That would have him earning 35 percent of the salary cap for the supermax in those years instead of 30 percent (regular max).
Like with Brown’s potential supermax extension offer, the Celtics are the only team that will be able to offer Tatum that kind of money on the free agent market, giving them the inside track to retain their All-Star for the remainder of the decade.
The distinction may also allow the Celtics and Tatum to be a little more cautious with his playing time and games played in the regular season moving forward. With Tatum already qualifying for a supermax, there may be less pressure for him to pile up bigger stats under more minutes with no more financial incentives tied to his All-NBA selection next year.
While the Celtics’ face a tall task in the present as they attempt to climb out of a 3-2 hole against the 76ers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, their future looks a lot brighter with supermax options in play now for Tatum and Brown.
