1-2-3 Here Comes Mister Lee….
Hey Now 🦾
The Boston Celtics are making another impressive addition to head coach Joe Mazzulla's staff for the 2023-24 NBA season.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Sunday morning that Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Charles Lee, who is highly regarded around the league, "is finalizing a deal to join the Boston Celtics as the lead assistant coach." Wojnarowski also noted that Lee was recently a finalist for the Toronto Raptors' and Detroit Pistons' head coach positions.
Not only is Lee a fantastic get for the Celtics, the fact that he is leaving one of Boston's top competitors in the Eastern Conference is another positive development for the franchise.
Earlier this month, it was reported the Celtics are hiring Sam Cassell to their coaching staff as an assistant. Cassell, who won a championship with the C's as a player in 2008, has been an assistant coach for more than a decade, most recently with the Philadelphia 76ers alongside Doc Rivers.
Lee and Cassell significantly strengthen a coaching staff that has seen lots of turnover during the last year. Three of the Celtics' assistant coaches from the 2022-23 season reportedly are expected to join Ime Udoka on the Houston Rockets' staff.

I'm very happy they are adding quality coaching talent but I am, quite frankly, a bit surprised that Charles Lee will be the lead assistant coach and not Sam Cassell.
I'm going to make an assumption that this has all been talked out in advance with those two men by Joe and Brad. Brad is, if nothing else, a professional communicator with his subordinates.
How many more do we need? I'd say we need a big man's coach but first we need to get those big men.

If you're looking at connective tissue in the latest reported addition to the @Celtics' coaching staff, Charles Lee was on the @ATLHawks' staff for Al Horford's last two years there.

Lee is another great addition to the Celtics coaching staff.
Experience matters and adding both Cassell and Lee tells me that Brad Stevens is doing the things that will help CJ become a better coach.

Mazzulla is making what look like some good choices in adding to his staff.
Since the two named so far had other options, they must believe Joe is a capable, knowledgeable leader, worthy of learning from and helping build their own resumes.

I’d like to believe that but most moves such as these (coaching ranks) are made largely based on prior relationships and high recommendation.
I don't believe that Joe has the tenure and has been in the league or for that matter basketball long enough to have built relationships and has full knowledge of the capabilities of a Sam Cassell or Lee.
Im quite sure Joe has had some input but these moves recently are pretty much shepherded by higher ups and folks that have been around awhile. Imo

I'm going to place my wager in the other direction, Ktron.
I don't believe a team is going to sign a head coach to a contract and then determine his staff for him, and I've not heard of that being done. The coach needs to be comfortable with his assistants. Naming them without a joint search involving the coach, or without the coaches suggestion or his buy-in at the minimum, would undermine his authority in running the team. It would seem a little early to do that to a guy you just decided to give a contract and your support after one season. If I were GM or ownership, I wouldn't want to invite that uncertainty if I believed my team had the potential to contend.
I don't think we can say Cassell or Lee have greater capabilities or are a better fit than Mazzulla, or are there to somehow instruct Mazzulla, or you would name them to be the head coach and let Joe go. Having been in the league a shorter time, does not mean you don't have superior coaching skills or are not a better fit for a team. Identifying a skilled coach is much harder to do from a fan's standpoint than identifying a skilled player. It's not like we can check his free-throw percentage and his winning percentage is brought on as much by the roster as it is his direction.

I’ll take that bet.
Im not inferring that Joe did not have a say or input into the selection of the 2 new coaches but to suggest that the powers that be left it up to Joe and they then signed off on his choices as all head coaches do would be in my opinion be considered malpractice.
That ain’t happening. They may have done it by committee by considering the people that were hire, I certainly don't believe they were handpicked by Joe. Do you really believe that this was status quo?
Joe is in a great position. He’s 34 and leading a contending team that is a scosche away from winning a title.
If Wyc and Brad came to him and suggested the two coaches thats were recently hired and asked his input, thats not usurping his authority and I only hope that Joe’s mature enough to understand and know what he doesn't know.
I don’t think they dictated it as being a must do. I believe they were going to hire the coaches that could help Joe here whether he bought in or not. They included him, no doubt but they made the move.
Who does Joe know in this league? When has he had time to forge relationships? He’s 34 with Carnation still on his breath.
Cmon NY, You actually believe that these hires were people that Joe found and brought to Brad?
When Brad was hired as coach Brad chose his people. I believe that. Ime chose his people. I believe that. Nurse has chosen his people. I believe that. There is no way that it went down the same way with Joe.
Do i know that to be a fact? No. But based on what I do know along with my instincts, there is no way on God’s green earth that Joe made these hires like any head coach would normally do.
As far as Cassell and Lee and their capabilities, I don't think that Joe is on Par with them-yet, nor do i think that they are there to instruct Joe.
Joe needed help and the team got him help. They could have fired him. They had cause. They didn’t. They got him help and I doubt if Joe is insulted by the moves. If he is then he lacks self awareness.
Joe may be Great one day. But not today.
As for the wager, I’d bet my mortgage but there is no way either one of us can prove it.
Joe should thank his lucky stars that he is coaching this team and that the FO is supporting him. FO gave him the keys to the car but not the entire fleet.
Cue: William Devaugn’s “Be Thankful for what you got”. :>)

Given the situation and me having little or no understanding of the reality of the situation, it leads me to believe . . .
It was neither. It was C. Collaboration.
My prize for winning this round:
Such a fun game, what's next?
My point exactly.
I’ve never heard of assistants simply being assigned.
Minus the doll, of course!

You’re hearing it now! Trust meeee Believvve me.
I don’t know everything, just about everything. However, just for the sake of peace and hair grease. I’ll settle on the collaboration theory.
