Celtics-Rockets takeaways: Brown shines as C's improve to 19-0 at home originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
The Boston Celtics are the first NBA team to win 30 games in the 2023-24 season.
The C's took care of business against the Houston Rockets on Saturday night at TD Garden with a huge second half. After leading by 11 at halftime, the C's outscored the Rockets 76-55 in the second half to win 145-113.
Boston's 30-9 record keeps them atop the league and Eastern Conference standings. The Celtics also became the first team in history to reach 3,600 wins in the regular season.
All five Celtics starters scored double digits, including Jaylen Brown's game-high 32. Jayson Tatum poured in 27 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Tatum was ejected in the fourth quarter after arguing with the officials over a non-call.
The C's will be back in action against the Raptors in Toronto on Monday. Before we look ahead to that matchup, here are three takeaways from Celtics-Rockets.
Jaylen Brown sets the tone at both ends of the floor
Brown was absolutely locked in tonight.
He scored 32 points on an efficient 11-of-15 shooting (4-of-6 from 3-point range), along with six rebounds and two assists.
Brown also did a great job attacking the heart of the Rockets defense. His aggressive drives to the basket produced 10 free throw attempts. It's actually just the second time all season Brown has attempted 10-plus free throws in a game. The first was earlier in the week against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Brown made a tremendous impact defensively, too. He tallied two steals and blocked two shots, including this emphatic denial of a Jabari Smith Jr. dunk attempt.
Brown is one of the best two-way wings in the league with his scoring ability, athleticism, length and commitment to defense. The 27-year-old guard talked in the offseason about being a better and more consistent defensive player, and so far he's lived up to those expectations.
Celtics' unbeaten run at home is alive
The Celtics have extended their franchise-best win streak at home to begin a season. They are now 19-0 on the Garden floor. If you include last season, the C's home win streak is now 26 games, which is the third-longest in team history (spanning multiple seasons).
The Celtics aren't just beating teams at home, they're crushing them. Ten of the Celtics' 19 home victories have come by double digits.
There are a couple tough opponents coming up on Boston's home schedule. The San Antonio Spurs are next on Thursday, but after that, the defending champion Denver Nuggets and resurgent Los Angeles Clippers come to town. LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers come to the Garden on Feb. 1.
The league record for most consecutive wins at home to start a season is 39-0 set by the San Antonio Spurs in 2015-16. The league record for best home record in a regular season is 40-1 set by the historic 1985-86 Celtics.
This year's Celtics have a long way to go before approaching those two milestones, but they are off to a pretty good start.
Celtics' defense stifles Rockets
In a matchup of two top-ranked defenses, it was the Celtics that shined in this all-important facet of the game.
They blocked eight shots and tallied seven steals. Five different players blocked at least one shot, including Al Horford, who swatted a Jeff Green attempt in the fourth quarter.
The Celtics also did a great job contesting Rockets shots and closing their time and space, especially on the perimeter. Houston shot just 7-of-30 (23.3 percent) from 3-point range as a result.
The Celtics and Rockets entered this game ranked No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, in defensive rating. After this game, the C's now rank No. 3 in opponents' field goal percentage and No. 6 in opponents points per game. The Celtics' defense is arguably the primary reason why they own the league's top record.

Bench getting more valuable PT/Run. Can't ask for anything better than that to cure any waning ills. DW & AL with +29/+30 respectively. Amazing. P-Squared driving opposition crazy. He really is like that annoying fly or gnat that keeps doing drive-bys around our head buzzing or not or incessantly diving for your ear, only for you to swing and miss. But just un-annoying enough that you don't get up out of your seat and get the fly swatter for more edge. Fun to watch. Especially when he gets those layups and/or rebounds amongst the trees. "Can you guard this Martha Faulker?!!"
It took us a little longer than expected to ditch HOU but probably not really. They've got things going on down there. Ime just needed a slap in the face as to how much longer the trip is going to be to get HOU to back to prominence. He hasn't been handed the keys to Fort Knox. But he'll get there. Just keep in in his pants. They are headed in the right direction.
Tonight we sided with the 3's and shooting better than 50% those shots are going to fly until further notice. And they did.
On to TOR. then back for SAS and DEN! Another interesting week.

In the post-game interview with Tatum, the "reporters" kept trying to dig into the dirt regarding the prior coach. Tatum dodged the noise and talked mostly wanting to get back on track after the bad loss to the Bucks.
Listening to the "reporters" ask questions that had nothing to do with the actual game that just played out in front of them left me wondering why they have media jobs in the first place.
Kudos for Tatum for not calling for a double tech on the media and getting them thrown out of the interview.

Hi,
We are back to normal. All parts of the team worked fairly smooth last night.

Sam Cassell walked off the court tonight, telling a friend, "the last time I was 30-9, I was in Houston." Almost 30 years ago to this day. #Rockets would go on to win the first of back-to-back championships.

Th Boston Celtics become the first NBA franchise with 3,600 wins. They record their 26th consecutive win at the Garden with a 145-113 blowout of the Rockets.
Celtics lead Minnesota by 2 1/2 games for best record in the NBA.
The Celtics are now 19-0. They need 8 more wins to pass a Bird team, and that's saying a lot.
The Rockets have/had the 6th best defense in the league. We dropped 145 on them. Some of that was their schedule, they played 8 games in the 13 days since 1/1/24 (a lot like our 5 games in 9 days that culminated in our getting blown out in Milwaukee). The last 4 have been road games. They play the Sixers in Philly tomorrow night.

Real impressive bounce back win after the Bucks game.
The Celtics are shooting 37.8% from deep YTD.
Too soon to ponder our 19 straight home wins vs the 85-86 team that posted a 40-1 home record. Nevertheless, the home start to this year has already surpassed any other Celtics team.
If not for the JT ejection, the Jays would have put up another 30+ 30 night. JB is playing really good basketball at both ends.
It is a 'we the north' visit tomorrow night and then Wemby and the Spurs visit on Wednesday. Speaking of the Spurs there is no need for Celtics fans to cry in their soup about our tough schedule. The Spurs have NINE 9 road games in a row coming up in February.
The Celtics have 2 more pairs of B2B games. After the Spurs game they head to Houston for a rematch and then play Dallas the next night. Add the Heat to the schedule 2 days after and that 3 game road trip should be fun and competitive.
The Celtics will have some home cooking (Jan 27 - Feb 9) with 7 straight games including another B2B vs Nola and the PITA Pacers.
The NBA trade deadline is on February 8th. A roster move will be coming to get us up to 15 players but that could end up being a signing for a player that gets cut.
The less noise you hear about the Celtics trades the better. Brad is as stealthy of a GM that I have ever seen.

Re: Post Game - Celtics vs. Rockets - Saturday, January 13 (W)
No one can fault Brad for not keeping his eyes open and his phone on at all times. Saturday he was up in Maine after shipping Banton and Queta up there. They were on a 4 game losing streak, but turned on the jets and played one heck of a game. He is constantly sizing up his players. Yesterday Stewart and Peterson put on a shooting show. Brad was not there for that. I wonder if we do not have the answere to our bench right under our nose. It is tempting to make a move, but it has to be the right move or why bother. Poor Gallinari, got shipped out again. at least he went with Muscala to keep him company
