Thought it might be Red Holzman so I googled it. Lawdy, lawdy, who woulda thunk it?

Beat, you should give a hint: the first 2 men to win it twice both had Celtic ties.

When did they start giving it out? I think Bill Fitch got it with two different franchises, but you'd think Red Auerbach would've won it multiple times if they were giving it out at the time. Before, that, maybe John Kundla with Minneapolis. Depends on when they started awarding it.

You know, it's really an odd award. They (whoever "they" are) seem to give it mostly to a coach of a low- or mid- level team that makes a big jump in wins. I think Popovich won it once, but I'm pretty sure Jerry Sloan hasn't, which is a crime, and at the risk of saying something blasphemous, I don't think Phil has either. By giving it to the coach of a team that makes a big jump, it's wound up being something of a curse when the coach subsequently gets fired when the team falls back (Byron Scott in New Orleans) or doesn't continue on the presumed path to greatness (Mike Brown). I can't think of other examples off the top of my head other than Scott and Brown, but I know others have gotten fired.

Who are the only two coaches to win the Coach of the Year award three times? (I hate one answer and love the other.)

Red won only once. Of course, the award only existed during less than one-third of his coaching career.

Hey Beat, thanks for taking the time to do the trivia quizzes. You usually pick something that educates me in one way or another.

Thanks!
