Re: Post Game - Celtics vs. Golden State Warriors - Wednesday, November 06 (L)
So it’s been a short sample size, but this was the first game could really see the notable difference without Jaylen. With both J’s we put such continual pressure on our opponents both ends. Having Hauser and Jordan Walsh getting those minutes is not the same as another all NBA performer at or near his peak that obviously makes us elite. It was easy to see the lack of Jaylens dogged punishing play make a big difference throughout this game. Jaylens physicality and tenacity makes others better and their jobs easier, make no mistake on that. I know Wiggins, Kuminga and Hield will have a much tougher time next time with our healthy all star back in their face.
Have to give the Warriors credit, they got rid of Klay, added some new good depth pieces in Hield and Kyle Anderson. The Warriors definitely have one of the best benches and Kerr can mix and match a lot of line ups, before he finds out which combination can work the best. They recreated their roster on the fly with heady veterans and with their depth have gotten off to a great start. They got deeper at the position that we are the best at, another team that made subtle acquisitions to match up with us.
Have to say the highlight of this game was seeing Queta give us a spark with his physical dirty work, extending possessions, dunking on huge possessions a few times, sparking us to a 7 point lead!! Joe made a key mistake, he took him out right when he was rolling…??? Joe you can rest him against the lesser teams, he’s 25, he’s rolling, let him keep battling in that paint. He’s got a knack for offensive boards that I know Heckler was loving. As soon as Queta left the lead started to dwindle, always ride the hot hand even if it’s hustle plays and offensive rebounding. If Queta gets minutes, he can give us 15-16 rebounds a game, I like that. They made their shots in the last 3 minutes and we didn’t, nice duel between Steph and JT. I like that JT didn’t just shot 3’s at crunch time, he attacked the basket and got a hard earned +1. His 32 points just wasn’t enough to overcome the Warriors effectively sharing the ball with more depth at crunch time and without his tag team partner. Good game, we’ll be alright.

Yeah, Queta saved us. He's going to be huge. Playing like a true Celtic and so early on. He gets it. DW unbelievable. There are no more superlatives for this guy. GSW are for real. Not much room at the top out West. Their defense ate us up. Yet we were still in the game even sans JB and KP. Dang! How much longer do we have to wait?!!

How come the Bucks are so asleep at the wheel? Think they couldn’t use Buddy Hield and Kyle Anderson? The really smart GM’s know how to make the right deals.

A Tale of Two Superstars. Just looking at the boxscore it looks like Tatum did ok (32 points on 10-20, 5-10 from 3) but that's misleading. He had 4 turnovers because they double teamed him constantly up top and he didn't read those traps quickly enough. He was trying to do it himself, and he couldn't. Curry had 27 points on 8-17, 4-9, but also had 9 assist and only 1 turnover. MOST IMPORTANTLY, he scored 10 points, 2 assists and zero turnovers in the 4th while Tatum scored 7 points and zero assists in the 4th.
They pnr'd us to death all night. Double-teaming Curry was a bad idea.
They doubled every Celtic when they were out near the half court line. This is great coaching. The half court line, once crossed, is like a sideline or baseline. When they trapped we couldn't retreat any further and that created opportunities for their defense by, if nothing else, taking time off the shot clock. Despite that being an obvious Kerr coaching decision we never realized that retreating to the half court line so we could "open up the floor" wasn't working because they'd pin us there. Move and countermove, and Joe didn't counter.
Jrue played defense (of course!). Jrue had 9 rebounds, 8 assists and only 1 turnover. Jrue also shot 3-11 and 0-6 from 3. There's something about the soullessness of today's NBA offense that just baffles me. We just keep chuckin' them up even if we're not doing well from there.
Derrick, on the other hand, had a great night. Why he wasn't given some of Jrue's shots, I don't know.
Payton 3-11 from 3. Unlike Jrue I expect conscienceless shooting from him. That's why he's on the team.
Q had a great game. He has earned more minutes. He's not Al's replacement, but only because he can't shoot 3s. He's more of Luke's replacement, although I've come to really appreciate Luke. They just have similar "around the basket" games.

Re: Post Game - Celtics vs. Golden State Warriors - Wednesday, November 06 (L)
I had not watched any GSW games this season so this was my first time seeing them in action.
Remember how difficult it used to be to score against Miami because they would push you out on defense bring early trapping schemes and pretty much blow up your screening game up top?
That is exactly what GS did to the Celtics last night. They turned us over early (10 first half turnovers) By the end of the game they ended up with a 16-7 point advantage on points scored off TOVS. I was surprised that the Celtics did not figure this out until after halftime.
After being held to a season low 40 first half points, the Celtics exploded for 41 points in the 3rd QTR
Collectively, the Celtics did not shoot the ball particularly well. They were 42.2% from the field. Their 3 point shooting was okay but still below par (19-54) 35.2%
CJ is still experimenting with the two big lineup. That may work against some teams but as I mentioned in the pregame review, the Warriors are playing small ball. We did not have enough quickness out there at either end to dull their offensive attack.
They won the fast break game 17-8 and still managed to produced a 52-36 PITP advantage.
GS played 11 guys in the first half. 10 of their 11 players scored in this game. They clearly won the bench scoring game 49-24 with 3 of their players scoring double figures. PP was our top scorer off the bench but his 16 points were very inefficient while recording 5-13 from the field and only 3-11 from deep.
JT was the main victim of all the trapping and physical play from GS and he had 4 TOVs but he still managed to go 10-20 from the field and 5-10 from deep despite missing one of his patented and ill advised step to the side, fadaway 3 point shots.
I was very impressed with the play of Neemias Queta. He started again and played a total of 28 minutes while Kornet only played 14 ineffective minute (2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists) It appears that Tillman is out of the rotation.
You could make a viable argument that a single big in the lineup can work with either AH or Queta staring. The problem last night is really about the lack of matching up with GS's small ball lineups. They can kill a 2-big lineup.
Anyways we saw a few too many undefended back cuts from the Warriors and our inability to secure rebounds with the game on the line, was the final nail in the coffin for this outing. 50/50 balls are always important in close games.
This is a copycat league, so the Celtics should anticipate that other teams may deploy similar tactics to stymie our offense.
I am a bit aggravated they we did not figure the traps out sooner.
I did not see anything from the Warriors to be concerned about.

Pretty much agree with your take on this game.
Right now Queta, is showing that he may be better than Luke. He had 5 offensive rebounds and displayed a level of physicality that Luke just does not possess. Queta had 2 tremendous shot blocks. He even played good defense out on the perimeter.
The Celtics need to play Jaden Springer or trade him. The Celtics should play more small ball when they struggled to keep up with a small ball team.
Crooklyn tomorrow!

Kornet strained his hammy last night.
JB was out again and the Celtics have no need to rush him back but the prognosis for his return was still positive. I expect him being inactive for maybe 2 weeks total.

JB was supposed to get another MRI done on his hip. Anyone know the results of that?
Not worried at all about last night's loss. We played without two starters and still almost beat a good team. Queta was amazing. I think we are still the clear favorite to win it all again, if we can get and stay healthy.

The Bucks are struggling at both ends while scoring only 111.7 PPG while giving up 118.3 PPG. Their net differential is -6.6
This is what happens when management gives into the whims of their franchise player. He wanted more scoring and forgot or maybe did not appreciate that they did not win a title because of their scoring. It was their defense. Once Jrue got traded their defensive identity also got traded combined that with the ongoing injury issues with Middleton and you have a team that is not very good.

Pretty much same take as everyone else. Certainly missed JB, but we just allowed too many second shots and putbacks. If we rebounded just a little better could have won the game.
Queta looks really good. I don't want to go overboard, but we may have found something with this guy. Walsh plays hard and didn't hurt us in the minutes he played. D White continues to perform at an All Star level.
As long as JB's injury isn't serious I'm not worried at all.

I do not know if he got another MRI. Coach Joe was asked about him yesterday and the Celtics are optimistic. This was probably a grade 1 Hip Flexor strain. We could have altered the matchups last night in our favor.
Health remains the ticket to winning for us. When healthy we are the most talented team in the NBA. Our center depth dwarfs every other team. Queta's emergence as a reliable center is all about opportunity. Every player needs to play in order to get better.

I'd still feel better about JB's hip if his MRI was clean. I know he was going to get another one. Just haven't heard the results.

If that’s what it takes, by all means, we know how hard he plays
