NORTHEAST BLIZZARD Empty NORTHEAST BLIZZARD

Post by 112288 Sun Dec 26, 2010 9:26 pm

Just trying to get some feedback across the Northeast as to snow conditions. Here on the north shore of Long Island (Oyster Bay) we have about 14" on the ground and the storm is really winding-up. We have sustained winds of 30 MPH with gusts over 45 MPH.

West Hampton Beach reported 55 MPH Gust and Shinnecock by Southampton 58MPH gust.

We are expecting 18"-24"+. We're getting BOMBED!

How's everyone else doing?

Pats are stuck in Buffalo until tomorrow....but we did win the best in the AFL and will have home field throughout the playoffs. Wonder how the Celtics are going to leave Boston tomorrow to fly to INDY?

How are you fairing Sam on the Cape?

We are too far away from the coast for this to affect us up here on the Tug. Haven't had any measurable snow in over a week but still have a foot or 2 on the ground.

Yeah it does look pretty bad along the coast but it appears to be a fast moving system so will be out of the area (NY) in a day.

It's supposed to be warm enough out here on the tip of the Cape so that me might have a couple of inches (four at the most) that will stick. Right now (7:30 pm on Sunday), it looks like there are a couple of inches on our car, but rain is falling instead of snow.

Boston, however, is a different story. They're talking about a foot there and as much as 20-24 inches farther west in Massachusetts. Worcester's always a snow belt.

I hope you and all other board members are safe, sound, warm, and with power. (Power is our greatest concern out here because the winds are really high, and we lose power at the drop of a hat.)

I'm thinking the worst will be over on the Island by noon tomorrow if not a bit sooner, the way the thing is moving.

I would say the worst of the storm will be now to about 3AM, then lighter amounts until the morning hours, then just snow showers. But the wind will be really bad through tomorrow PM.

Will keep you guys posted!

So far not so bad. It is snowing at a fairly good clip and we expect 10 to 15 inches with heavy winds, though very little wind so far. I too tend to lose power easily so I hope the wind stays away. I think the worst is tracking towards the coast not inland here in the Berskshires.

My neighbors are off tomorrow and will be watching my pups, perhaps I'll have some good pictures of them playing in the deep snow, if so I'll share.

It's now almost 11:30 pm on Sunday, and the wind has died way down. Because of the rain, there's relatively little snow on the ground. We may have dodged this bullet, but we'll get ours at a later date when the Nor'easters start coming up the coast.

Take care, everyone.

I'd say we have about a foot out here in the Berskhires, but it is thankfully very light. Still no high winds.

We'll see what things look like in the morning. The good thing (or bad thing?) is, regardless of what the roads are like I live all of 1/8 of a mile from where I work so I can just throw the boots on and walk.

Guy's, we had a wind blast at Islip Airport at 10:15 @ 64 MPH. I heard Natucket island recorded a wind gust at 71 MPH this evening. I have 20" here in Oyster Bay North Shore of Long Island and at 12 midnight it still coming down heavy with sever winds. They up the total for some places to well over 24".

Now that I had my hot coco with whip cream.....calling it a day and going to do some reading of the new Celtic book I mentioned on my post. A lot of digging tomorrow.........Good Night............Stay Safe!

We didn't wind up with much snow because so much of the storm consisted of rain. But it was reported on Boston television that my Cape Cod community of Wellfleet had an 80 MPH gust of wind overnight—classified as a Hurricane 1 gust.

Hope our bird feeders are still operational.

We haven't had much here in Western NY state from this storm (although we set a December snowfall record earlier) but my brother and his family live on the western end of Long Island in Little Neck. They were up for Christmas and are right now heading back via Amtrak through Penn Station. They expect that their car will be plowed in and are hopefull that the Long Island Railroad is even running out of Penn toward the island.

For a change the snow is hitting downstate. I hope all of you along the Eastern Seaboard have enough holiday leftovers to make it a party. Spike another egg nog and stay warm!

heard this morning that for every inch of snow in NYC, 1 million dollars is spent for it's removal.

Geesh I'm glad our little town here in Lorraine can do it a tad more efficently economically and probably effectively too. Heck Our entier town budget is less than a million. But I do realize that in the City there is really no where to put it. Out here it's mostly rural country roads.

Hey Cow,

don't they put plows on the garbage trucks in the City when need be??

NY,

Tell your brother that the Long Island Rail Road is still shut system wide and will only get main lines open tomorrow. Your brother is on the Port Washington line and may have service tomorrow.

I posted this on FB, but it seems to be appropriate to post it here as well:

I went out this morning with my walk-behind snowblower and took just under a foot off the top. I only did just where the pavement is, but that is a lot. I was able to do this during a lul in the storm, but just as I finished, it started sleeting, and then it started to snow in earnest.

Now the driveway is worse than the first time. The wind is howling at over 30 mph and I have a 4' snow drift running the length of the front of the house. The wind won't drop under 20mph until 6:00PM tomorrow, or so the internet weather channel tells me.

I spent the afternoon cleaning out the other half of the barn so I can get the tractor in and put the snowblower, chains and 3-sided cab on it. That's styling compared to walking behind one. 24" walk-behind vs 44" tractor mount. I can throw this kind of snow 40' with the Deere.

The storm (the snowing part) is mostly done, but the re-distribution part goes on. I got my work cut out for me tomorrow AM for sure!!
