WEEI 850

Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge made his weekly appearance on The Big Show Thursday, discussing the team's potential activity in the the trade market, Ray Allen's forthcoming record, and Kendrick Perkins' future with the team.

With Marquis Daniels having gone down with a bruised spinal cord in Sunday's game after a collision with Gilbert Arenas, Ainge admitted that the team is more likely to make calls than simply field them.

"We're having conversations," Ainge said. "I think the Marquis incident makes us a little bit more proactive rather than just receiving calls and seeing what else might be a possibility to back up Paul [Pierce] or Ray [Allen] in the playoffs."

Allen could break Reggie Miller's record of 2,560 career three-pointers with a pair of threes Thursday against the Lakers.

"I think this record of Ray's is significant because I think it will last a long, long time," Ainge said.

"I think he's going to set a record of over 3,000 3-pointers and I think that's just unbelievable."

Perkins has told media outlets recently that he has declined a contract extension offered to him by the team. Ainge shed light on the situation.

"Perk was offered a contract that we can offer," Ainge said. "Under the collective bargaining agreement there's only a certain about of money we can offer Perk, and we offered him that contract. Understandably, Perk's not interested in that contract.

Ainge noted that the team "can't offer him a nickel more than we've offered him" and that the situation has "been explained to him" by both Ainge and Perkins' agent.

Ainge says he may make a move at the trade deadline for a backup 3

Chris Forsberg of ESPN reported today that Ainge may try to trade for a backup 3 before the trade deadline, depending on the extent of Daniels spine bruise injury.

Ainge's official quote was:

"We may be looking at the trade deadline to make a move,'' Ainge said. "And not just for the short term. We'll see how Marquis does. I like our team. But the Marquis situation could give us something to think about at the perimeter. We'll just have to see where he is.

Star-divide

The quote from Ainge was interesting, since it is the first time at least I have heard any comments from Ainge saying that he may pull the trigger on a trade in order to acquire a backup 3 in response to the Daniels injury.

Ainge has been quoted in the past saying that he liked his current roster and did not expect to make any moves at the trade deadline heading toward the playoffs, but that of course was prior to the Daniels injury.

If Ainge does go through with a attempted trade to acquire a back up 3 , the big question is what player(s) will he offer from the C's as trade bait and what player will he want to get in exchange ????

If you are asking me I think they will give up Bradley & Luke and perhaps Nat and bring in a younger player who has some polish but not a big contract yet. Could be a multi player deal.

Anthony Randolph and Terrence Williams are two talented young players that for whatever reason are not in the rotation and might be available for the cheap.Randolph is a big 3 and Williams has ball handling skills and is a raw athlete. Both have more talent than they've shown this year.

.....however neither Randolph or Williams has the experience of playing playoff basketball,it would take them time to learn our/Docs system and be effective/comfortable in it.The only player out there now that could get the system right away is Posey, will Larry do us a favor,he certainly doesn't need Posey for anything?
