ADVERTISING ON THIS FORUM
It appears that Forumotion, which is the operator of this and numerous other forums, is now instituting advertising on their forums just as many sites (like Boston.com) do in an effort to make money or defray expenses. I want to assure all members thatwe have nothing to do with this advertising and will not be making a penny off it.
I guess they rotate the ads so you don't always see the same ones. My experience with my blog (on which I do permit the owner to run advertising on which I make about two cents a day—no exaggeration) is that they try (as best they can) to run ads consistent with the content of the forum. For example, I notice that one of the ads on this forum has involved where to get Celtics tickets.
I'm sorry for any imposition. If the ads become too intrusive, we'll complain to Forumotion about it. Thanks for your understanding.

Re: ADVERTISING ON THIS FORUM
Seems to be Google ads and those are usually content related so you should be fine.
Sometimes the ads can get really weird/funny if you are in some discussion thread about unusual stuff.

Re: ADVERTISING ON THIS FORUM
Sam-
as someone who has thought a lot about the detrimental effects on our society of cradle-to-grave advertising exposure (especially through tv), this subject is never too far from my mind.
However, I think the fact that they're running ads on the site now says a lot about the vitality of the forum you've created. There's obviously enough volume and individual page views that it has gotten to a point where they can put it into their ad packages, so I say "Bravo" to you for creating something that is getting some pretty strong legs under it.
The ads are pretty unobtrusive, so I'm thinking of them as a price of the site's success- a commercial validation if you will.
I'm just disappointed that you don't get a cut of the revenue.
You should revisit that subject with forumotion once the site has been up for a while and has more members. They'd be foolish to not give you a small cut to keep you from setting up shop elsewhere.
Anyway, I'm looking at the ads as sign that your baby is now walking. Congrats !

Re: ADVERTISING ON THIS FORUM
Sky,
Thanks for the reinforcement. I don't care about a cut, partly because I made about 2¢ a day from advertising on my blog, even when I was getting upwards of 400 "hits" a day. Only if people click on the ads is any money made. That happened about once a week and was worth a whopping 40¢. Maybe forumotion makes more, but I doubt I would. I'm happy with the subscription price and with giving part of that back in contest prizes, etc. I'm a happy guy, mainly because of the support of you and so many others.
Thanks again.

Can you download the database and such for the forum in case you ever chose to change hosting?

Swede,
I'm not the technical guy. Maybe NYCelt, gyso or Pete would have an opinion on that. However, I can tell you that I would be VERY reluctant to make a change because of all the time the four of us have invested in this go-round. It could happen, and maybe the other three will weigh in on your question. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Re: ADVERTISING ON THIS FORUM
We've had a couple of "bots" all day at the forum lurking around in the background, sampling conversations, looking for matches of some sort.
With Jeb claiming ESPN-induced rashes of some sort, I wonder if "ointment" ads may be in the offing.
Dare mention being PO'd and we may see Depends ads in the streamer above.

I looked up to my horror the other day and saw "Get your Kobe Bryant gear."
Dont mind it and smal price to pay but was nice when it was not there.

Re: ADVERTISING ON THIS FORUM
Jeb,
I feel like I'm walking on sunshine. As for the ad, David brought my attention to it. Fine with me, especially since we have no control over which ads Forumotion runs. Meybe a Kobe's name will make us seem more "ecumenical." I'm not worried about attracting trolls, because the only question before zapping them would be whether I want to have some sport with them and THEN zap them before they respond.

Jeb, after hearing the Lakers fan appropriately boo their efforts last night, I think their "marketing folks" decided that Sam's site would be the most populated place to try to sell their products. As you know the LA fans will abandon their losing sports teams quicker than a "Southern lightning bug" disappears in "daylight"!!!
See on Game On on Sunday!! Ya Hear Now!!

Re: ADVERTISING ON THIS FORUM
I was one of those doing the booing. I put more effort into figuring out which games I was going to go to this year, picking up my date and driving down to Staples Center than the effort any Laker not named Brown or Artest put into playing the game.
They should be ashamed and embarrassed for mailing that one in.
It's one thing to lose a close game at home where the ball didn't bounce your way. It's another to simply not show up, not play defense, and not run your offense.
It's also one thing to take a night off in early March when the season is in the post-All Star break/ pre-playoff grind. That's going to happen.
but to take the night of on the second game of the year ?
It was bad. I usually go with one of my buddies, but I'm glad I took a date last night, as at least the rest of the night made up for the abomination impersonating a basketball game that took place at Staples.

PS- that's pretty hilarious that there was an ad for Kobe gear on this site. GUess someone's computer program is a little bit off the mark.
What's the next ad going to be, the "Kobe Doin' Work" autographed director's cut ?
Now THAT will move like hotcakes on this site.

Hey Jeb- you out West still ? OR were you when you saw the Kobe ad ?
I just went back to the home screen and saw a "Listen to the Lakers on ESPN 710AM" ad. (That's their radio flagship here in LA.)
I'm thinking maybe these ads vary depending on where you are logging in from.

Re: ADVERTISING ON THIS FORUM
Jeb, he's one of the best. When we were under the fire on the other site with the flurry of personal insults Babyskyhook put basketball aside and stepped as a respectful poster friend. He basically let those folks know that they were a disgrace to the city of Los Angeles and the Lakers organization in general.
We promised him that we would buy him a green surf board with the Celtics logo in the center if he would join us and root the Celts on to #18. So far, he has remained loyal to the purple and gold. We'll have to keep working on him!!

It will be fun all year to have sucha bright Laker fan's insight. Really it's invaluable to me to hear what the other side is thinking.
Mg as well. Adults can disagree and still talk. I think a lot of the hateful talk that goes around in politics is really hurting the country. I can remember growing up I had relatives that were dem and repub and they would disagree. Often. But they would talk AND listen and we need more of that.

Re: ADVERTISING ON THIS FORUM
Jeb, I completely agree. This would be a better country, if not a better world, if all of us could keep an open mind to listening and trying to accept another person's right to an opposing view. Most of us all have differences if not sports teams, it could be political views, and/or as simple as a preference of colors or food. The problem, as I saw it on the other site, the "hatred" was not a per se "hatred" for the Boston Celtics. but a "hatred" for anything or anyone associated with the city of Boston. Some like Babyskyhook and MG saw through the phony use of a "supposed" love for a sports team to spew "hatred". They distanced themselves as much as posting on BDC would allow us to do so.
Heck, we even find that there are differences of opinions with those of us who love the Celtics. Some think the Bird years were the best of the best, some believe the Russell years were the best, and some believe the Cowens years were the best. At the end of the day we all respect the right of the other party to have their preferences, and join hands to support the effort to win #18.
Good points Jeb.

Thanks Jeb. I'm looking forward to seeing how the C's match up against the Hornets. Chris Paul will be a good test for the "new" Rondo.
