Celtics Roster Now Pretty Much in Focus
Based on what I just read in today's Boston Herald (http://bostonherald.com/sports/basketball/celtics/view.bg?&articleid=1061147413&format=&page=2&listingType=celt#articleFull), the Celtics' roster is almost set.
The article says they have 13 guys under contract, and I assume they're:
KG, Wilcox, Melo
Bass, Sullinger
Pierce, Green, Joseph
Lee, Terry, Bradley
Rondo, Smith (yes, he quietly signed two weeks ago, according to the article)
The article also says they're trying to sign Christmas and are looking for a center to complete the 15-man roster.
So, if they're also going to add a backup guard (e.g. Dooling), they'll either have to cut someone or complete a two-for-one trade or refrain from signing another center. Gyso can indicate whether or not this is correct, but I assume that renouncing Pietrus and Dooling would remove the cap holds on those two.

What jumps out at me is our lack of height. We've got gunners, a few bangers, some greyhounds and at least one sleight-of-hand artist but only 2 tall trees (and one of them is not ready for primetime).

Re: Celtics Roster Now Pretty Much in Focus
Sam,
Since Boston has technically stayed over the cap, (due to cap holds) they do not need to renounce any players. They didn't sign any players with cap space. All of their new players were either re-signed through bird rights, trades and Terry was signed with the md-level exception.
They have the bi-annual exception and veterans minimum left.
Boston is probably less then $4m away from their cap so I am not so sure they will sign a 15th player yet. If Boston signs a 15th player now, they can't add any more salary for the rest of the season. If they have an injury or two, they might need some financial flexibility. It doesn't make too much sense to tie up salary on a 15th player that won't have a meaningful role on the team.

This off season has been one of the most exciting for me to follow since they put together the team around the big three. Can't wait to see these guys hit the floor.
I'm pretty sure Danny will come up with something for another big, perhaps a signing similar to the PJ Brown move.

When teams figure out who they have and where they are overloaded, players are dropped, traded etc. Danny may wait all summer or into the fall before adding anyone else. He may wait until the trade deadline and assess what is out there. There are many options although the draft and free agent signing periods are generally the most productive.

Based upon what I saw in this summer league, this kid can shoot. Funny thing is that he's shorter than Moore and I don't see him as a point guard either. Makes me wonder what they saw in Smith that they didn't see in Moore. Of course, they might have had no choice in trading Moore since he had the magic contract $ that made the Lee deal fly.

cow,
They are inviting Xmas to camp, they are talking to his agent a lot (Xmas himself said he was getting updates from his agent almost daily).
We're up to our beady little eyeballs in guards.
Thinner than toilet paper at a dive motel at center.

jeez remember all the BIG monsters we had at the start of 10-11 Shaq, JON, Semih, Perk and KG? if only we got that crew together one year earlier, now that would have been outstanding.

cow,
Unless we sign Dooling and Daniels for the veteran's minimum and then trade them with our bi-annual exemption for Steamer in a sign-and-trade!?
C'mon Danny! Get those creative juices flowing!

I'd love to see what Steamer could do for us with 2 good feet, we have a shot since Sota still hasn't announced anything.

Jamar Smith? I thought maybe Danny had signed the reincarnation of Joseph Smith, Mormon prophet.

Re: Celtics Roster Now Pretty Much in Focus
Still not sure what the offer is.

July 21, 2012
LAS VEGAS — The Minnesota Timberwolves agreed to terms on an offer sheet with restricted free-agent center Greg Stiemsma. His agent, Mike Naiditch, confirmed the agreement but said that no terms are yet available.
Stiemsma played in 55 games last season with the Boston Celtics, starting three. He averaged 2.9 points and 3.2 rebounds in 13.9 minutes per game. The 26-year-old native of Randolph, Wis., was undrafted out of Wisconsin in 2008, and he played on summer-league squads for Memphis in 2009 and Minnesota in 2010. The Timberwolves signed the 6-foot-11, 260-pound Stiemsma to a contract in April 2010 and waived him the next September.
He also appeared in games with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in three seasons, from 2009-2011, before being called up to the Celtics. In his one season of consistent D-League play, Stiemsma averaged 8.8 points and 7.1 rebounds in 2009-10.
The Timberwolves, whose effort to sign small forward Nicolas Batum away from the Portland Trail Blazers fell through on Wednesday, began their free-agent pursuit again in earnest this week. Although the team spent the early days of free agency focusing on wing players, owner Glen Taylor said that it would begin to focus on acquiring big men if its offer to Batum fell through. Stiemsma represents a move in that direction.
Stiemsma has never been anything but a bench player in the NBA, and that won't change with the Timberwolves. After waiving Darko Milicic on July 12, the team's roster boasted only one center, Nikola Pekovic, who is expected to start in the upcoming season. However, the team desperately needed a backup, with Anthony Randolph gone and Anthony Tolliver still unsigned.
Naiditch said that there are many things about Minnesota that appeal to Stiemsma. He's comfortable with the location, which is close to his hometown, and he also believes that the current roster will provide good opportunities for him. He likes the direction the team is heading, he's likes the team's prospects, and he was also impressed with the Timberwolves' immediate interest in him.
"David Kahn called Greg one minute after free agency began," Naiditch said. "He's visited Minneapolis twice. ... It was just an ongoing growing of comfort from the beginning."
The Celtics are already over the salary cap, which would make them unable to match any contract totaling more than the bi-annual exception. The Celtics extended Stiemsma a $1.05 million qualifying offer before free agency began, which would have marked a nearly $300,000 raise from last season. They have three days to match the Timberwolves' offer, per league rules.

Where is Semih Erden.
Is there no chance Kristic can join us?
Seems we need a serviceable backup big who can play a decent fifteen minutes a game.....

Kristic re-signed with CSKA Moscow and is not coming any time soon to the NBA. I believe Erdin is also under contract. Not sure where.

Re: Celtics Roster Now Pretty Much in Focus
Okay, the likelihood is that the 15-man roster will consist of the following, barring a trade or the signing of someone like Dooling instead of Christmas). (Names in parentheses are two-position players.)
C KG, Collins, Wilcox, Melo
PF Bass, Sullinger (Wilcox)
SF Pierce, Green, Joseph
SG Lee, Terry, Bradley, Christmas, Smith
PG Rondo, (Terry), (Christmas)
Nice mix of nine veterans and six young guys. Heavy emphasis on players with strong defensive skills. Up-tempo potential at every position. Good balance between inside, slashing, mid-range and perimeter offense. A healthy presence of high-character guys. Excellent blend of potential mentors and guys just aching to learn. Well above-average collective basketball IQ. Major commitment to the team game.
Strong candidates for the DL: Melo, Smith, and either Christmas or Joseph.
I'm stoked!

If I do not remember incorrectly Collins played really good defense on Howard in the playoffs when the Hawks met the Magic a few years ago.
