Duncan gets praised; KG did same thing
Article raves that Tim Duncan, who, in the last year of his contract got paid $21.16 million, agreed to approximately half that going forward - $9.65 mil for this coming year, $10.36 mil for 2013-2014 and $10 mil for 2014-2015 - so the Spurs could retain their key players and keep their team intact to remain in the championship hunt.

KG made $21.2 million in the last year of his contract and did exactly the same thing, taking about ten million less per year for his three year deal for the same reasons, but nothing was said about it in an article like this. Boston press, however, pointed it out though. And us fans are obviously happy to have him back.
And by the way, KG and Duncan are virtually the same age: Duncan is 25 days older than KG.
Pretty similar situation. But I didn't see a national article about KG doing it.
But you know what? For two 36 year old front-court players who signed new multi-year deals, that's about what each of them are worth when you figure in the somewhat decreased productivity from their peak years of constant 20+ and 10+ seasons. Both contracts are fair to both the player and their team. No one is giving the other side a bargain, although that article certainly claims Duncan is.
