On The Horizon Empty On The Horizon

As most of you may recall, I like watching the sports media in particular go overboard hyping a game or event or betting on the wrong horse, no matter how shameless and slobbering they seem. For what is coming Monday they are not disappointing me.

I know over time it has to be 50/50, but it seems like everytime there is a big game that involves the Celtics on national tv, the Celtics are always on the road, making it potentially more difficult for them to win. The only time I see more Celtic big home games are in the playoff where tv is forced to carry the games since the playoffs are now fully covered nationally from start to finish. I know the media and all those involved in the decision making for which games are picked up that they want the maximum viewership and perhaps most of the world wants to see the Celtics always in the most difficult situations in hopes that they will blow it on a national scale and scene. They feed on that.

Since the media is all over the Miami streak in the NBA world and there is nothing else to report about, I find Monday's game most intriguing. This game is a HOME game for the Celtics on ESPN. Make no mistake, it is and will be all about Miami on Monday. ESPN is giving the Celtics a small amount of play that they may be the streak show wreckers but you have to listen for it really hard. With this game, they are like what Eddie Murphy says in Trading Places, "So you guys are a couple of bookies!" ESPN is going to win big whether Miami wins or Boston wins. Miami wins and the media's, not Miami's, blessed streak continues. If Boston wins, to a lesser degree, we're the proverbial party crashers but it produces great press anyway.

I like Paul and KG's responses to questions recently about Miami's streak. It really shows what NBA basketball is all about, what Celtic basketball is all about and what competition on the floor is all about. They said to effect we are not impressed and we would really like it if you lost the remaining games of your season. Perfect answers. Just stick to it through Monday.

If all the Celtics can keep that mentality and take it as just another game against Miami, expect to win like they have against them in the past and not get caught up in any of the hype, they will be fine and walk out with a pretty big regualr season win, if you are looking for that kind of fun while waiting for the playoffs.

It's still the media's best effort to make a regualr season of NBA basketball meaningful. When you boil it down, all the regular season is for is postion, developing synergy and setting your line ups for the playoffs. Even the last two are difficult to do because of injuries always messing with that.

So combine the fawning over every move in Miami and the world's desire to have the Celtics lose big on a national scale against a runaway train from South Beach and you have a reason to watch the game and buy the products being hyped during the commercials.

And that's the way the world goes around.
