COMMENTARY | Many had high hopes for Jason Terry after he signed with the Boston Celtics this past offseason as Ray Allen's replacement. Allen was coming off a season where he was injured down the stretch and very ineffective at times, and suddenly looked very old. At the time, it was reasonable to believe that this would be an upgrade for the Celtics. Terry looked to provide a better threat off the dribble while still providing the right amount of floor spacing with his shooting.
Following the end of their season, Jason Terry has undergone left knee surgery, according to ESPN. It was an arthroscopic surgery, which is certainly never a good thing for a 35-year-old guard.
Terry is set to make more than $5 million per year for the next two seasons, a deal that certainly does not appear to be a good one for Boston.
Prior to the surgery, wondering whether or not Danny Ainge would look to move Terry this offseason would have would have been fair. He isn't getting any younger, and he simply did not look very good thsi season. Following the news of this surgery, it is definitely a reasonable thought.
At 35, Terry appears to have clearly lost a step. His shooting numbers were slightly below his career averages, and he had his lowest points per game average since his rookie year. Following the loss of Rajon Rondo, Terry was exposed as the weak ball handler and the below average defender that he is. At over $5 million per year, this is certainly not a great deal for the Celtics.
Danny Ainge always seems willing to poke around the market to see what's available, and he would be smart to do so with Terry. There could be a competitor in desperate need of a shooter that could use his services, such as the Memphis Grizzlies. While Boston would probably be lucky to get much in return, they may be able to at least dump the remainder of his deal on another team. At this point, that might be enough for the Celtics to pull the trigger.
Looking forward, Terry may not have much of a role waiting for him with the Celtics. Rajon Rondo will be returning from injury, and Avery Bradley and Courtney Lee will most likely still be in town. Additionally, the team traded for Jordan Crawford during last season, a possible alternative to Terry. While Crawford is certainly unpolished and far from being a consistently good player, he is the cheaper and younger option.
Of course, this may depend a little on what direction the franchise decides to head in. If Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett return, Terry may very well stay with the team. If they leave, however, look for Jason Terry to follow them out the door in some manner.
Regardless, this news of knee surgery doesn't help Terry's situation.

Re: Jason Terry has arthroscopic surgery
This surgery, and it's not supposed to be a significant one, doesn't change Jason Terry's situation one bit. He was untradeable, due to his age and contract, before and he still is.
