Competition Committee Recommending Instant Replays of Charges & Blocks
And now, some news that has nothing to do with Doc. Yeah!
The NBA's Competition Committee is recommending an expansion of instant replay to include late-game reviews of block/charge plays.
This marks the first time the league is considering the review of judgment calls by a referee.
"This is significant," Stu Jackson said on Wednesday. "It's our first foray into utilizing instant replay for a judgment call. It at least cracks the door open."
The change would allow officials to get a closer look at a collision between two players to deem if it was a blocking foul on the defense or a charging foul on the offense.

MY NOTE: The good news is that it could definitely reduce the numbers of flops, especially if the refs review the play, call a flop on the spot and hit them with a foul and/or T. The bad news is that this could significantly slow the game down. We need to change the mentality of the players, as a whole, and doing that will require a major adjustment in how calls are made and what the penalty for bad behavior is. My hope is that they raise the penalty a lot, give the refs the authority to review the plays first but the refs do not get carried away and overuse it. After bitching non-stop about the quality of the refs, adding another tool in the kit to help them might not be a bad thing.

To make it practical, they need to have a separate replay official who could buzz the on-court ref if there is a potential issue, like they do in football, then have the replay ref, not the on-court ref, make the final call (like in football).
To make up for the time spent with charge/block/flop replays, speed up the actual shooting of free throws so they only take 15 seconds. No more hand-slapping after every single free throw or guys coming up to massage the ball, which is common but really odd.

Bob,
Thanks. Why don't they also look into replaying goaltending, especially when bouncing off the board is involved.
In general I'm for the replays. One of the reasons - geriatric part of the officiating crews can not keep up with ever increasing speed of the game.

They need to get rid of that circle altogether. It's unnecessary and is the primary reason why refs are so inconsistent when calling blocking fouls/charges, they either look at the players in motion or they watch the circle, unable to focus on the entire play at once.
To me, if a players feet are planted or if the offensive player initiates the most contact, it's a charge. If the defensive player is shuffling feet or isn't going straight up to contest, then it should be a blocking foul.
That'd make things a heck of a lot simpler.
