New York Knicks: J.R. Smith Reportedly Suspended
Yahoo! Contributor Network Chris Smith 1 hour ago
COMMENTARY | J.R. Smith had one of his most memorable seasons last year.
He won Sixth Man of the Year and hit numerous game-winning shots. He settled into his bench role nicely, where he was the focal point of the New York Knicks' offense with Carmelo Anthony resting. This offseason, he was rewarded with a nice new contract that will keep him in New York. Looking forward, he appears to be a major part of New York's plan.
J.R. has always come with more than his fair share of baggage. To call him a personality would be a huge understatement. Smith is certainly one of a kind, both on and off the court, for better or for worse.
Now, it appears as if he is in some trouble with the league. Smith will be suspended for 5 games this season after violating the NBA's drug policy, according to Yahoo Sports.
My reaction: What took so long?
It seems surprising that it took J.R. this long to get suspended for violating the drug policy in New York. We always hear of him going to clubs and constantly partying in the Big Apple, often at questionable times. If you keep an ear to the rumors flying around the Internet, this news does not surprise you very much.
In the big picture, this probably shouldn't be a huge deal for the Knicks. They have enough depth where they can go a few games without J.R. during the regular season. Mike Woodson can look to players such as Iman Shumpert, Beno Udrih, and Metta World Peace to pick up a few extra minutes while J.R. is suspended. If it helps keep him a little fresh for the postseason, where he was clearly not himself last season, where's the harm?
Looking forward, the major concern for the Knicks should be making sure it doesn't happen again. The team can survive a few games here and there, but this can't become a regular thing. Smith's focus needs to be 100 percent on basketball, although this seemingly hasn't been the case while he has been in New York.

My Take: Just another headcase that likes to shoot 3's.
