Celtics Lead Among Teams Negotiating Rights To Romero Osby
Oct 29, 2013 3:28 PM EDT
With the Boston Celtics as the leading candidate to acquire his rights, Romero Osby is finalizing a deal to sign in the NBA D-League, league sources told RealGM.
Osby was a final cut of the Orlando Magic, who selected the rugged, active forward with the No. 51 pick in the NBA draft. Since Osby’s release in training camp, the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Brooklyn Nets have also expressed interest in him, sources said.
Fort Wayne currently owns rights to Osby, but the Celtics’ D-League affiliate – the Maine Red Claws – is working to acquire the 23-year-old. The Celtics have one roster spot open and could call up Osby at a point that is flexible on the team’s salary situation.
Osby averaged 16 points and seven rebounds last season at the University of Oklahoma. He was part of the Magic’s summer league team and became one of the last rookie signings to officially join his drafted organization.
In seven preseason games for the Magic, Osby averaged 5.7 points and four rebounds in 15.4 minutes a game.

Maine Red Claws Acquire Osby, Gaddy
PORTLAND, Maine - November 4, 2013 - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, today announced the team has acquired rookie Romero Osby from the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in exchange for the rights to Terrance Henry, 10th overall pick in this year’s D-League Draft, and the rights to Xavier Silas.
Osby, who was selected by the Orlando Magic in the 2nd round (51st overall) of the 2013 NBA Draft, is coming off his senior season at the University of Oklahoma, where the 6-8 forward averaged 16.0 points (shooting .525 from the field and .529 from three-point range), 7.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists, while being named the University of Oklahoma’s Men’s Basketball team MVP and earning All-Big 12 1st Team honors.
“We’re really excited about bringing Romero on board,” said Red Claws Head Coach Mike Taylor. “Romero is a talented forward who had a great career at the University of Oklahoma and we’re expecting him to come in and contribute immediately.”
In exchange for Osby, Fort Wayne receives the rights to Terrance Henry, who the Red Claws selected 10th overall in the 2013 D-League Draft. Henry was a four-year letter winner for Ole Miss, where he ended his Rebel career ranked 28th on the all-time scoring list with 1,095 points and fifth all-time in blocks (113). In his senior year, the 6-9 forward was named to the All-SEC 2nd Team while averaging 12.3 points and 4.5 rebounds. After graduating, Henry was a member of the Memphis Grizzlies summer league team, then went on to play for Hermine Nantes Atlantique (France) posting averages of 10.9 points and 4.4 rebounds. Additionally, the Mad Ants receive the rights to Xavier Silas, who holds career averages of 10.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists in the D-League. Silas appeared in 72 games during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons for the Red Claws.
In a separate transaction, the Red Claws acquired the rights to point guard Abdul Gaddy from the Santa Cruz Warriors in exchange for the draft rights to 7th round pick Paul Crosby and Maine’s 2014 2nd round draft pick.
Gaddy, who was selected 27th overall in the D-League draft, was a member of the 2013 Charlotte Bobcats' training camp roster. The University of Washington product appeared in 114 games for the Huskies and holds career averages of 7.6 points and 3.8 assists. Gaddy was a highly touted recruit out of high school, playing in the 2009 McDonald’s All-American game, and was a high school and AAU teammate of current Celtics guard Avery Bradley.
Maine’s roster now stands at 17 with training camp set to begin Thursday, November 7.

MY NOTE: Abdul Gaddy is a 6'2 1/2" PG (without shoes, interestingly. Old school). That would probably make him 6'4" by today's standards. 6'7 1/2" wingspan. High School teammate of Avery Bradley.

Acquisitions for the Red Claws, without any idea of either ever playing in Boston, I would think.
