I'm stumped.

Couldn't have been in the 1950's. The Lakers while in Minnesota must have had some lean years after Mikan retired but the Celtics, even before Russell, always made the playoffs.

Couldn't have been in the 60's since the Lakers were that decade's bridesmaids to the Celtics.

Couldn't have been in the 70's since even when both teams were down they weren't down in the same year.

Couldn't have been in the 80's for obvious reasons.

During much of the 90's the C's wandered the wilderness while the Lakers must have been setting a record for playoff underachievement.

The first decade of this century, LA was always a contender while the C's were in the dumpster until Ainge got the Big Three.

So what's the answer?

It could just be old age being 65 but I can't think that far back, great question and dying for an answer.

Considering both franchises have been around for about 60 years, that is a remarkable piece of trivia.

So, tonight's game is history making, I guess!!!

Good news indeed, makes me feel better about the ageing thing Smile Also says a lot about the rivalry between these two great teams.

Considering that the two franchises combined have 33 of 68 championships and another 27 finals appearances, chances of this happening are rare indeed.

I'm guessing the 1993-94 season.

Thanks, Bob. I got tripped up on the wording of the question. I thought he meant never before that one time.

BobH,

They just announced on the pre-game Celtics show that the last time the Celtics and Lakers met when both were under .500 occurred on March 4, 1994. I looked it up, and the Celtics won the game 109-99, after which the C's were 21-36 and the Lakers were 21-34, so both teams were more than 10 games below .500.

So, aside from the technicality that it didn't happen before the All-Star break, my guess of the 1993-94 season wasn't all that bad, huh?
