Mike Gorman: Paul Pierce ‘Would Come Back’ To Celtics As Player, Broadcaster
WEEI by Ben Watanabe
Fancred Paul Pierce will make at least one more trip back to Boston this season when the Brooklyn Nets revisit TD Garden in March.
Eventually, however, Pierce could return for good. In a one-on-one conversation before Sunday’s game, Pierce said he “would come back” to the Boston Celtics organization, TV play-by-play announcer Mike Gorman said Monday in a radio interview.
Pierce would not necessarily be back in a playing capacity — he could always come back in a managerial or coaching capacity — but it’s no secret that Celtics fans would love to see him retire in a green uniform. “He really left the door wide open,” Gorman said on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich. “He said he would come back and work in the front office, [as an] assistant coach.
He smiled and said he would come back as a player — and really smiled when he said he would come back as a broadcaster. “Paul wants to stay in basketball, and his heart remains in Boston. He knew he was connected to this city, but when he left and came back, he really knew how connected he was.” Pierce, 36, is in the final season of a four-year, $61 million contract he signed with the Celtics in 2010. His $15 million option was picked up last offseason. He played 15 seasons in Boston, long maintaining that he desired to play his entire career with the Celtics.

I could see Pierce as a TV personality. He certainly has the persona for it.

I think he comes back at a small salary for a year or two.

You really think that? Somehow I just have a feeling doing that makes Danny admit he made a mistake. Now, if you tell me Wallace is gone, then maybe Paul does come back. If not, a one day contract so he retires a Celtic

Rosalie,
No mistake by Danny. He got #1 draft picks and perhaps a convert Humphries to resign. Wallace was a price that had to be paid in order to do the deal with Brooklyn. Wallace will pass in time as well with another asset coming to Boston in a trade.

What would the mistake be, Boston was not going anywhere this year so Pierce got to spend a year with a team that were contenders and boston got plenty in return. Sounds like a win/win.
If he does not like how the Nets is going he can come back next year and play for a city/team he loves that will have a good core + possibly draft a very good player (wiggins/parker/etc) plus a role player this year(whatever they can find for nets/hawks pick). Throw in managing to trade some kind of combo of hump/bass/green/wallace/olynyk for Asik or some other center and they might very well be back in semi-contention.
