Kyle,
That's true, but in the Yankees' case I think you can call it "re-buying."

lol. But that of course hurts their ability to bring up good cheap talent for their team. Not only do they lose draft picks but Sanchez is the only decent prospect they have and they go and sign Brian McCann to play his position.

I'm not much of a Yankee fan, although my son is. It's almost like they consistently trade away good young talent instead of being patient and letting them develop. They have a kid from our area, Cito Culver, among a couple of prospects lined up at short behind Jeter. I have kind of a rooting interest there because he's trained by the same hitting instructor my son now goes to and is a good young kid. Watch them ship him off in a package for some often injured 37-year old!

NYCelt,
As a Red Sox fan, I can only say "Gee, that would be a shame for the Yankees." Speaking of packages, do you think the Yankees have suffered enough for spending hundreds of millions on an arrogant third baseman who is more interested in his package than in his team?

The starting backcourt is tanking. Fortunately, all they need is a short tank.

International,
I read the comments, but I don't see what they have to do with tanking theories. But it really wouldn't matter. I love to exchange views and learn from others. But I'm not one of those who even feels the majority is always right. Nor do I feel others have to agree with me for me to be right. I assume you feel the same way.

Re: Tanking Or Not Tanking?
International,
Rondo was having knee soreness. It wouldn't be wise to push him too hard too soon or he could re-injure his knee.
Bradley tweaked his ankle again and he just needs to let it heal. And even if he could play, it wouldn't be to the best of his ability.
I don't see what's wrong in resting players that are injured.

Re: Tanking Or Not Tanking?
Sam,
Your comment above about the 14 mediocre years of the Celtics franchise: if I'm not wrong this was the period where the Celtics were owned by a private corporation. The team was never improved during that time. Then the team was sold to the present owners i.e. it was no longer in corporate hands. That was the start of the long climb back to excellence.
Maybe you can help me out as I'm not sure I can trust my memory for two reasons:
1. I'm so damn old and
2. It was difficult for me to follow the team at that time from Berlin
as there was no internet.
If I'm correct I find this very interesting and it also puzzles me as I have not seen any comments about this (again maybe because I am so far away from the "action").
P.S. amusingly enough in German the word "Aktion" means a share of stock. One doesn't buy shares of stock one buys "Aktion".

Re: Tanking Or Not Tanking?
As much as I'd like to see the Celts wind up with Jabari Parker in the draft, I'm always happy that the Celts are winning. It speaks to their strength of character as a team and as an organization never to tank. Regarding centers, Danny has passed over several good centers in the draft. It's not his strong suit as an evaluator of player personnel. He's superb at picking 1,2,3, and 4 in the draft, but 5 - not so much. This is another reason, a big reason, why I'd like to see him trade for a proven defensive 5 as Sam suggests, rather than try to draft one. Now if he could only swing a trade involving Joe Barry Carroll...

Berlin, I looked around to supplement my memory, and this is what I came up with.
For the first 36 years (and 15 titles) of its existence, the Boston Celtics franchise was privately held. When it was sold around 1985 by Harry Mangurian to the Gaston Family (whose birthright allegedly included wearing handlebar moustaches and tying women to active railroad tracks), the Gaston family formed a Limited Partnership in order to save a boatload in taxes. As far as I now, the franchise is still a Limited Partnership, not a corporation.
What you may be thinking of is that, in 1986, the Gastons took the franchise public (more largesse for the Gastons), and The Boston Celtics became one of the few entities of any kind that was a Limited Partnership while being traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
When Wyc, Steve and partners bought the Celtics in 2003, all 58,000 investors (including me—one share that had been a gift from my wife) were forced to sell all their shares back @ $27 a share, and the Celtics were no longer publicly traded. So I can say that, as an owner of the Celtics, I made a nifty profit in the $17 range, which is more than Walter Brown could have said in the early 50s. And, unlike Walter, I didn't have to take out a loan on my house just to stay financially afloat. (Some say Walter sold his house; and, if that's true, I wonder if he ever slept on Dave Cowens' Boston Public Garden bench.)
Anyway, it was mostly under the Gastons' "watch" (which was about the scope of a pocket watch), that the crap happened. (In those days, I used to call it the "Gray Nineties.") The father, Don, wasn't all that terrible; but his son, Paul (nicknamed "ThanksDad") would have needed an elevator to reach worm's penthouse. I had a meeting with ThanksDad and his key henchmen when he owned the Celtics, and he was one of the coldest, most money-grubbing, totally materialistic sons of bitches I've ever met.
Anyway, we know what began in 2003 and how it came to fruition five years later (as Danny promised). And, although I'm somehow not a fan of Wyc's personality having received a number of really arrogant email responses from him, this ownership group has spared almost no expense to bring the team back to prominence.
While I was looking for information, I ran across a good article about Wyc, centered around the fact that Wyc, who grew up in the Boston suburb of Weston (ca-ching), would never have returned from his California home and would never have bought the Celtics had his son not been blind. I recall watching the choir of the Perkins School for the Blind, including Campbell Grousbeck, sing at TD Garden a few years ago.

Re: Tanking Or Not Tanking?
Thanks for the info, Sam. You must have spent quite a bit of time putting it together. Too bad that it doesn't back up my supposition that corporations mostly sacrifice quality for profit (shareholder-value). I know they often do but apparently not in this case.

Re: Tanking Or Not Tanking?
Actually, Berlin, I think many private owners (or partners) will also sacrifice quality for profit, so I think you had the right idea. I'm afraid I don't have a lot of respect for the Celtics owners between Harry Mangurian's group and the current partnership. One factor in my reasoning may be the fact that the Gastons tried to get the U.S. mint to print $1,000 bills with Rick Pitino's profile on it and some woman gyrating seductively in the background of the picture.
