Tommy: Kelly Olynyk Has Potential to Be the Celtics' Kevin Love
I've heard people say that Sully could be a "Love-lite", but Kelly?
I love Tommy, nobody bleeds greener than him, nobody, but sometimes he out-Johnny's Johnny Most (and boy, was that ever hard to do!). He does stress he's talking about "potential". Covered ("covered" my ass, more like completely draped) by that caveat you can say almost anything. In fairness to Kelly we should remember he just completed the first half of his first season and that he got very inconsistent minutes early on. It's hard to develop when you get 9 minutes, then 19 minutes, then 11 minutes then 25 minutes, then...Truth is, if we're talking about being fair to Kelly we wouldn't say this about him at all. Remember when Danny Ainge came to the Celtics and was being described as "the next Jerry West"? That wasn't fair (nor did it turn out to be true). Ainge was a good player, a starter, on a two-championship team. That's still pretty good but it's not The Logo (yes, I know that 2 championships is 1 championship more than West got, but we're talking about individual development here, not team accolades and achievements. Let's hope Kelly and the Celtics don't have to overcome a modern equivalent of Russell's Celtics like West did).
He makes some specific points about Kelly's skills, to back up his point, but wow! What a statement!
Go Tommy!
Go Celtics!

Tommy gets ahead of himself sometimes and feels to need to make strong statements and then stand behind them. Usually if you look at what he says, it isnt X is Y. But the media takes it out of context and runs with it.
He never said Steamer was Bill Russell - he said, when he blocks shots and keeps them in bounds - it was "Russell Like". He didnt say Kelly would become Kevin Love, he said he could become the Celtics version of Kevin Love
Much ado about nothing.

We have to keep in mind how difficult it is for Celtics announcers to keep injecting some semblance of excitement into a season I wouldn't describe as exciting in general. One of the techniques for doing so is to take what we, on this board, would call "glimmers" and pump up those glimmers like a can of Red Bull. (No double entendre intended with that last word.)
Over time, this season has produced enough glimmers produced by individuals to keep the pulse of Celtics Nation beating. In no particular order of occurrence, glimmers have been produced by: Brad, Green, Wallace, Bass, Humphries, Sully, Crawford, Pressey, Johnson, Rondo, and Olynyk. Call them false glimmers, fleeting glimmers, true glimmers, whatever. My point is that they have all provided Tommy material to position positively.
It's important to keep in mind that no other color person in the league can duplicate the lineage of Tommy Heinsohn in terms of maintaining a positive mentality as an essential ingredient in producing championships year after year after. It's understanding that younger folks might find it difficult to realize how habit-forming that enduring focus can become.
Many people call Tommy a "homer." Many people call Tommy unrealistic. I have only one word to describe Tommy:
A CELTIC.
