Stan Van Gundy
Here's a couple of conflicting rumors about Stan Van Gundy's potential coaching options. Both rumors are on RealGM (the editor must be on a mental health holiday). You really start to appreciate what a coup signing Brad Stevens was for Danny when you see the list of retreads like The Master of Disaster and Coach Wannabees like Steve Kerr (who has never coached at any level before) getting grabbed onto like they were the last lifeboat on the Titanic.

Pistons Pursuing Stan Van Gundy With Offer Of Full Control
May 13, 2014 12:32 PM EDT
The Detroit Pistons are pursuing Stan Van Gundy with a lucrative offer to assume complete control of basketball operations in addition to become their head coach.
The Pistons are competing with the Golden State Warriors, who are aggressively pursuing Van Gundy for their coaching position.
The Pistons have a far less appealing roster than the Warriors, but he would have far more control in their organization. The Warriors have an entrenched general manager in Bob Myers and an active owner in Joe Lacob, in addition to Jerry West serving as a consultant.
The Pistons parted ways with Joe Dumars this season.
Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News reports that Van Gundy asked the Warriors for total control of the roster, but they declined making that opportunity available.

Re: Stan Van Gundy
Quite amusing. I'd be surprised if Woodson or Brown get another significant job any time soon.

Stan Van Gundy in control. Does not compute. Actually, the first piece doesn't mention the nature of the job he's being considered for, and I had hopes that it was of a janitorial nature. But the second piece brought me back to sad reality.

Stan Van Gundy, Pistons Agree On $35M, Five-Year Deal
May 13, 2014 10:06 PM EDT
The Detroit Pistons and Stan Van Gundy have reached agreement on a five-year, $35 million for him to become their head coach and president of basketball operations.
The deal was formally announced on Wednesday.
Van Gundy has been out of the NBA over the past two seasons after being fired by the Orlando Magic.
The Golden State Warriors were also very interested in Van Gundy, making him their top target, but they were unwilling to cede authority away from Bob Myers.
Sources say the opportunity for Van Gundy to have a Pat Riley-level say on basketball matters swayed him to choose the Pistons over the Warriors.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported that Van Gundy may hire Otis Smith to serve as day-to-day general manager.

MY NOTE: I can't help but feel that GSW just dodged a bullet.

Re: Stan Van Gundy
What has Stan Van Gundy done or not done for some to think he's not a good coach?
He has a .641 career winning percentage.
He led a team that had Dwight and a bunch of averageish players to the NBA Finals.
He handled the two year Dwight leaving Orlando drama quite well.
If he looked like Brad Stevens would people view him differently?

Re: Stan Van Gundy
Suffice it to say that I passed a used car lot yesterday, and I'm sure I saw him berating a customer. Coaches get wins in different ways. I just don't happen to like the rather bombastic way in which he goes about it.

Re: Stan Van Gundy
As I've stated here before, and without going into long stories, I have nothing but respect for the entire Van Gundy family.
There should always be at least one Van Gundy in the NBA.
I'll also agree with TJs comments above.
Good for Stan. I'm sure he'll do a great job.

Re: Stan Van Gundy
Stan is a decent coach. But making him head of basketball operations? Ehh, let him stick to coaching and have someone else handle that responsibility.
