I think were alot closer to being good than being terrible with a legit rim protector, Rondo is an all star, his shot could be better next year finally. AB, Sully, KO can all make significant growth/improvement. If we get a stud in the draft or two, with Asik we could be good in the weak EC.

hawksnestbeach wrote:Sam, I don't think Asik would vault us into contention, which is the only reason I'd want him at the apparent asking price. To me, for each acquisition, we should ask two questions: Is this player good enough to start on a championship team in 2016(7)? and Is the price right? In Asik's case, the price seems too high. I think he could be serviceable if surrounded by great players.
dboss, I don't think Vonleh would thrive as a starting center next year, but we do have Vitor, Anthony and maybe Iversen available. Say we did start Vonleh, or play him quite a bit at center. Would this stunt his growth or jumpstart it? Would our record be comparable to this year's with such a team? (And lead to the same type of draft status: a decent chance to land a very good player?)
I just can't see heading into the future, which Danny certainly did with the Nets' deal, by bringing in vets like Perk, Asik, and Love, who will be paid according to what they have done, not what they're likely to do in the future. Hawk
wasn't Perk good enough to start in 08? isn't Splitter a starter? Asik compares favorably to those 2 IMHO.
Vonleh is not an athlete, despite his long arms I don't see him as a legit 5.

Rondo the all star. 13 mil a year for a player whose calling card is the useless individual assist stat. 13 mil to pass the ball to guys that were tied for next to last in fg% last year. Talk about the cart before the horse. The big bucks should go to the players that can find the bottom of the net.

Re: The Omer Asik Thread
Okay, I'll say it again for the fiftieth time. The reason I favor getting Asik and, hopefully, Love as well is NOT (I say again NOT) because I believe they will catapult the Celtics to prominence in a short span of time. Instead, I feel that having at least Asik aboard will enable the rest of the team to play their most appropriate positions and assume their most appropriate roles. Having Love aboard as well would solidify a dynamic duo up front and would allow the Celtics brass to concentrate on getting the right wing players to complement a new "big three."
I believe that those who keep talking about being cautious and looking toward the future overlook an extremely important factor: Development is an ongoing process that should start now, not in a few years. And the more balanced their roster, the easier I think it will be for the Celtics to develop good playing habits, rather than habits formed in an environment comprised of players who are struggling to function in miscast roles rather than being able to focus on establishing some momentum and chemistry regardless of their W/L record.
Moreover, I believe it would be easier for a team with three cornerstone players to generate a vision for the future for the team, enabling the brass to evaluate the emerging value of younger players in moving toward that vision, and to tweak the roster accordingly over time.
In addition, the development of the younger players should benefit from having the guidance of three veterans on (and potentially off) the court. Playing with a lot of other young guys is not necessarily a recipe for proper development.

Re: The Omer Asik Thread
I for one hear you loud and clear Sam. We just differ on the road to the promised land.
Following a 24-58 season in 2006-07, Doc put a team on the floor, that would eventually end up with 9 new players on the roster of 15. They sure did learn how to play together pretty quickly. They came out of the gate flying, raced out to a 29-3 record, and never looked back. 2006-07 saw them ranked 29th with a fg% of .443. They moved up to 4th in 2007-08 with a fg% of .475.
But the bottom line is that it does't matter what we think. We can play general manager until Hell freezes over but for us uninformed its nothing more than a guessing game.

Re: The Omer Asik Thread
Sam,
some of us feel Asik is no where near a "big 3" type player.
Love, Rondo, ???
we'll have a big 2 there.
Asik can be a part of a championship team as a PART. But he is not an elite all-star caliber player, IMO.
I too feel that Asik may be our best option at Center next season, IF Ainge is trying for a quick rebuild. he will be a solid piece, not the least of which is your reasoning of players playing the correct positions, etc.
However with Asik and Love , many of those players simply will be traded away to get those two.
Sully, Green, Perhaps KO could be all needed to get Asik and Love (among other assets including up to 3-4 first round picks).
Asik, like Green & Bradley are nice PARTS on a good team. But none of them are all-stars .
