Should the Celtics make this trade?
http://www.rantsports.com/nba/2014/08/02/detroit-pistons-should-trade-josh-smith-for-boston-celtics-jeff-green/
The major problem is, we already have too many power forwards and that's Josh Smith's natural position, even if he is a better player than Green. But it's an interesting proposal. Smith can drive you just as nuts as Green can, in different ways so I say no. Maybe less so if he goes back to PF, but what would that do to the minutes of Sully, Olynyk and Bass? A logjam at that position, to be sure.

By the way, that article incorrectly says Jeff Green shot 44% last year. If only. He shot a paltry 41.2%.
He is a career 44.1% FG shooter who had a very poor shooting year last year.

Just say No! to Josh Smith as a Celtic. Maybe back when we had a relevant Pierce and KG, but absolutely not in a rebuild situation.

Hi,
I don't see what Josh Smith can bring to Celtics.
This trade seems like a wishful thinking of a Pistons' fan.
The only possible reason for it could be a 3-team deal - send JS for somebody.

Maybe, if there's a nostalgia for Sidney Wicks. Otherwise, no.
Josh Smith is an enigma. He's a very talented and productive player who makes his team worse.

This would be a terrible trade for Boston.
Jeff is a better fit for Boston at SF.
Jeff has at most $18.4m left on his contract.
Josh has a guaranteed $40.5m left on his.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, a noted basketball nut, Josh Smith is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. Jeff Green is merely an enigma.

Yeah, that sums it up well.
I think in this case it's better to stick with the enigma...

Re: Should the Celtics make this trade?
That would just be swapping inconsistency at a position where we have need for a consistency at a crowded position. If Josh could play the "3," it might be worth consideration, but that's obviously not his forte. What we most emphatically do NOT need is another Celtic playing out of position.

Only if it's part of a series of trades. Now if it was Wallace for Smith ...

I'm starting to see a trend: not a single yes so far. Not a lot of love for Josh these days. Hope his dog likes him.

He has a bad contract and plays a position we have a lot of current players playing.

Re: Should the Celtics make this trade?
If we traded Rondo for Josh Smith we could have Kelly playing Point, Avery at shooting guard, Jeff Green at the 3, Sully at Center, and Josh at the 4 his natural position. That way we'd only have 2 players out of position, less than last year.

steve,
Not on this board, at least. He's the Bizarro Jeff Green. Smith is better at 4 than at 3 while Green is reversed. The difference between them, in my opinion, is that Josh Smith is undersized to play 4, which tells me his effectiveness will erode over time as he loses whatever speed he has and has to rely on strength and size. Green will lose a step over time but he's pretty fast now. If he ends up playing more 4 later in his career he could put on a few pounds and do it. Whether he has the stomach for the wars underneath is another question.
I'm all for trading Jeff Green if we can get a player that helps the team fill a bigger need. Josh Smith, in my opinion, does that in one way and in only one way, it might encourage his high school roommate Rajon Rondo to stop playing "I can't wait for my World Tour next summer!" games and sign an extension early.

Re: Should the Celtics make this trade?
There would be a concern as to whether Rondo has the stomach to play the "4". But there would be more worries as to he has the muscles.

Beat,
It went well, thanks for asking.
Baseball ended last Monday and football started this Monday, the 4th, although he's still got one day of an infielders camp tomorrow.
He played on a Little League house team and also made a district travel team, while also making the local state tournament team and playing in that. We made a pretty quick exit from the state tournament, but played in the championship games for both Little League and travel, unfortunately coming away the bridesmaid in both of those.
Michael mostly pitched and played first, with some time at short and a few innings here and there in the outfield. On the travel team he was the team's starting pitcher in all but one game, although he missed a couple while we were on vacation. For the most part he batted third; sixth on the state tourney team, where he was also the starting first baseman. It was a long season with indoor practice starting back on the first weekend in January for the travel team.
Tryouts for next year's baseball teams come up in a little over a month. In the meantime we started football this week with the season kicking off September 7. Don't know where we'll play him this year; he was QB, LB, DT last year, but we've moved up and he's among the smaller half of the team for this year. Basketball starts in November, and takes us back just short of the baseball opener in April. Fifth grade this coming year, where, fortunately, with all his other activities, he's been keeping up his enriched/accelerated math.
Pic below from a travel team game.

No thanks
Josh Smith is a pain in the ass. Last guy you need on a team in a rebuilding phase.

I agree completely with mrkleen. For me, the litmus test is: will this player help us in 3 years? Hawk
