LeBron James: General Manager?
Lebron James hired as Cavaliers new GM

During the summer of 2009, "The Decision" made waves throughout the NBA. Endless speculation about the Heat's title prospects ensued afterwards. A single team would be loaded with historic talent. Fast forward 5 years and that run is now over. The Heat were successful in 2 ventures to the NBA Finals. But after losing to the Spurs in humiliating fashion, 4-1, a future of uncertainty became realized.
Such a convincing defeat was enough to give Lebron pause for actually committing himself to another contract with the Heat. He subsequently opted-out.
Thus, "The Decision 2.0"
James signed a 2-year contract in Cleveland, maximizing his leverage and sending a clear message to the Cavaliers' organization: building a contender NOW is the only acceptable course of action. Or he has the option to walk as quickly as he arrived.
A fortunate turn of events afforded the Cavs the opportunity to draft Wiggins before "The Decision 2.0." But that pick would become the centerpiece in the deal for Kevin Love. In my personal opinion, Wiggins has almost unlimited upside and will become one of the best players in the league in a few years. But as expected, the Cavs are in "win now" mode. With the trade basically complete, the oddsmakers are already rubbing their palms together feverishly.
Lebron wanted Kevin Love to be signed. And the Cavs capitulated to his will. One has to at least consider the prospect that Lebron is the one in control now. Not owner Dan Gilbert, nor GM David Griffin. Whatever Lebron wants, Lebron gets. He's probably the most powerful athlete in any sport right now in terms of clout with one's own team executives.
Clearly, the Cavs are afraid of losing Lebron to free agency again, and this time appear to be willing to spare no expense to keep their "king" happy.

I can only wish Lebron, as de factor general manager, the same level of wisdom displayed by Michael Jordan in a similar capacity.

Franchise players have always had a big say on player moves. Celtic management consulted with Bird when considering trading Maxwell for Bill Walton and didn't pull the trigger on the deal until Bird gave his okay.
Wiggins may well become a terrific player but that probably won't happen for several years.
Clvd probably feels that as long as they have Lebron in his prime they'll be able to attract free agents like bears to honey.
