Missing a third of your foul shots against a good team is a recipe for trouble because much of the effort required to get those freebies in the first place is wasted. The Celts had six more free throw opportunities than the Knicks but made only three more freebies than the New Yorkers. They lost by three points. Easy math.

Boston vs NY was some hot rivalry in the early 70's.
The Knicks did something that is now common place: they seldom contested the Celtics for offensive rebounds, preferring to get a high percentage shot with good floor balance and then retreating to present a well organized half court defense.
